Without lines in a parking lot, there is chaos.

When it snows here and the lines are covered at work we probably lose a third of our parking spots because people can't park.

No. My Sentra is the most loved car I have ever owned, just under my last Sentra.

Gateway is selling computers (again?).

Back in the 90's it was Dell vs Gateway and then Gateway somehow fell off the face of the earth. I remember going to the post office (or maybe UPS) to collect my GW desktop and the lady said "oh, the cow box".

Not sure it's a good idea but I like their initiative, creativity, and organizational & sales ability. Seems like self-segregation but I can see the appeal with the promise of a safer community for "my family".

https://www.cnn.com/2020/09/12/us/freedom-black-cooperative-toomsboro/index.html
"Welcome to Freedom!" exclaims real estate agent Ashley Scott as she surveys the nearly 97 acres of land that she and a group of 19 Black families purchased in August.

"I'm hoping that it will be a thriving safe haven for people of color, for Black families in particular," Scott says.

The land sits just East of Macon in rural Wilkinson County, Georgia. Scott and her friend, investor and entrepreneur Renee Walters, didn't initially plan on buying a large plot of land, but they had a vision that was clear -- to create a safe space for their Black families.

"Being able to create a community that is thriving, that is safe, that has agriculture and commercial businesses that are supporting one another and that dollars circulating in our community, that is our vision."

Like I said in the other thread. The sure way to kill a movement is to appropriate it for your own. Corporate sponsorship, league led 'statements', end up becoming useless.

F1 already has done it too. Everyone just stands on a line and either kneels or stands for a moment of silence. Only Lewis is up there with his protest shirt and makes the actual statement. The rest might as well be saying the pledge of allegiance. Just one more rote thing with pressure to participate, which just makes the people who don't, get all the attention.

From the extremely inconsequential pet peeves file. I do exhibit some OCD signs with some things, so this may stem from that.

My wife will constantly stop the microwave with heating something with time left and it drives me mildly nuts when she doesn't hit reset to put the timer back a 0:00 LOL.

I never say anything because it is so stupid and trivial, but every time I see 0:19, 0:42, 0:09 etc i am cursing her under my breath :)

So my brakes on my car started squeaking. Good timing as my car is due for an oil change and other routine maintenance. I go to the website to get the phone number of my usual place but it's not there anymore. Looks like they're trying to get people to just use their website now, so I do that (fine by me, I fucking hate talking on the phone for literally any reason)

I fill out the form to schedule an appointment and pick the option to have several things done. Oil change, top off fluids, brake check, tire rotation, etc. I go back and forth on including a comment about my breaks squeaking. I mean, it should be obvious that they are when they take a look, right? (Right? I'm clueless when it comes to cars but I'd imagine my brake pads, or at least one, will be obviously in need or replacing). But I add the comment "My brakes are squeaking"....then I delete it. Then I add in "My brakes occasionally squeak". Then I delete it...

Then I tell my neurotic mess of a brain to just add a comment about my brakes squeaking and hit the submit button already.

"Occasionally here my brakes squeaking" is the comment I left.

god damn it...

My wife can’t finish a can of soda. It’s so gd annoying.

Ksyrup
09-15-2020, 07:04 AM
Same with my wife and daughter. Half-empty cans of pop on the table or in the fridge nearly every day.

The other annoyance - my wife refuses to drink out of a can, so everything has to go into a cup with ice. Disgusting. Plus, more to clean up for no damn reason.

I don't get the "disgusting" part here, but, yeah, wife and daughter leave their half-drank (if that) seltzer cans all over the damn house.

Ksyrup

Because within milliseconds, the melting ice waters down the pop. And there's just something distinctly unsatisfying about drinking pop out of a cup unless you're out to eat and get it from a machine. I refuse to buy 2 liters for that reason - pop doesn't taste anywhere near as good unless it's out of a can.

I would get a new favorite beverage if I couldn't drink my favorite beverage!

For me, the ice completely ruins the drink because it takes the bite away. That's the best part of pop. I want it to hurt going down.

Instant watered down drink. Plus, the ice gets in the way of a good chug/burn.

My usual is to put a can in the freezer for about 20 minutes to get it right up to the point where it is about to start turning into slush, then I drink it in about 3-5 minutes.

Okay, this is where I get revenge on my wife for the microwave being stopped early and not reset LOL. I drink so much water during the day that there are always a couple of unfinished water bottles around and it drives my wife as nuts as microwave habit drives me :)

I'm not a for ice or against ice. I can do both but there is a point where it gets too watered down (e.g. large coke from McDonalds on a long car trip).

And ice in a glass hurting teeth when drinking? Not sure what the problem is but don't think that is normal.

Are people in certain professions/roles still being held to a higher standard? It feels like that requirement has gone by the wayside for most professions/roles. In the rare cases that it does exist it is like we are holding the fifteen year old cashier at Burger King to that standard.

Hmm.

By and large, yeah, I'd say conduct/image/behavioral standards have pretty much been abandoned for virtually all professions. Part of the regression of the "i'm okay, you're okay, anything goes" era.

Literally couldn't tell you the last thing I bought -- digital or physical copy.

Would have been something that came bundled with either a ticket sale or a t-shirt/merch sale. And of the last 2-3 of those, I couldn't tell you where any of them (physical CDs) even are.

If Spotify goes away, it goes away. I'll live. The decline of worthwhile music in the past couple years (+/-) have cooled my enthusiasm considerably, despite still spending 10-20 hours a week doing weekly playlists. It's more a chore than a pleasure at this point and I spend several times more hours compiling those than I do actually listening to them.

If they weren't my kid's primary source for regular listening, I'd likely have stopped already.

Knowledge is knowing that, yes, I could have easily enough eaten a sixth hot dog on AYCE night at the local hot dog joint.

I don't think I've read an update recently from you re: Athens and coronavirus masks & social distancing. I assume it has gotten worse?

I hardly pay it any mind here honestly, since I've only made three purchases in Clarke County (home of Athens) in the couple months since our virtually useless governor dropped his lawsuit and let the local idiot govt run free. Our regular Mexican restaurant a couple times and an Arbys drive thru once. Basically, the county has no bearing on my life anymore except for the annual tax payment.

But, for you, I googled.

The increase from August to Sept was a bit higher (1,400 new cases) than July to August (1,100) new cases was. But that period includes the return of students to town, so it really doesn't provide a consistent picture of rate. I mean, that's like getting an entirely new population dropped in your lap (some of which count toward here, some of which count toward their county of residence) so I don't know how to parse that out (student figures are not allowed to say X of these are attributed to Y county)

Quite a few of the Kroger storebrands compare favorably to their name brand counterpart. Their plain ol' "Classic Potato Chip" is super close to Lay's, arguably the best store/generic I've found for regular chips.

Aldi still has 'em beat for copycats of less standard lines -- funyons, fritos, cheetos, etc -- but for straight up chips, Kroger is right there and actually better than Aldi on those.

Red cabbage in salad mix is really out of control. It has to cost more than iceberg, and i thought it was just in there for color along with the shredded carrots. but lately the ratio is far out of control. I'll look down and have 75% or more red cabbage in a bite. Annoying.

Ugh, whatever you do, don't buy condoms from Vietnam!

https://www.cbsnews.com/news/vietnam-condom-recycling-police-raid-factory-used-resale/
Police in Vietnam said they found about 320,000 recycled used condoms that were being repackaged as new, local media reported on Thursday, according to the Associated Press.

Market inspectors in the Binh Duong province raided a factory near Ho Chi Minh City, where they discovered used condoms being repackaged to be sold at the market. An inspector said the factory's 34-year-old owner, a woman, confessed they purchased the condoms from someone else, the state-owned Tuoi Tre newspaper reported, according to the AP.

After buying the condoms from a man, they were washed and reshaped, then packed in plastic bags, according to the newspaper.

I like Meghan speaking her mind and trying to get out the vote (e.g. I don't like Harry getting involved though). I likely won't vote for her but it would be fascinating to see how that plays out.

However, in the hypothetical where it was Meghan vs Kanye, I would go Meghan.

“I Think…She Would Seriously Consider Running for President”: Inside Meghan Markle’s Political Ambitions | Vanity Fair (https://www.vanityfair.com/style/2020/09/meghan-markle-running-for-president)
Rumors abound that Meghan could run for president in 2024, and she got the attention of the office’s current occupant, who said in a press conference on Wednesday that he is “not a fan” of the duchess. Donald Trump was responding to a video that she and Prince Harry made to promote Time 100’s list of the most influential people in 2020, in which she declared that November’s election is “the most important election of our lifetime.” But it’s possible that 2024 could be even more important for her personally.

“One of the reasons she was so keen not to give up her American citizenship was so she had the option to go into politics,” said a close friend of the royal. “I think if Meghan and Harry ever gave up their titles she would seriously consider running for president.”

Just watched a really bad HS football team punt on 4th & 50.

Yes, I said _and 50_, not _from the 50_.

Just not the sorta down & distance you see very often.

multiple sacks & an intentional grounding in the same "drive", that's how it happens. Starter sacked, backup QB in & I'd almost swear you could hear him scream while being chased before throwing the ball up for grabs, starter back in & he gets sacked, narrowly escaping his own end zone.

One of the better quality fake ID rings in the U.S. ran out of Athens for a while a few years back. Started in a frat house, eventually had multiple apartments going, produced over 1,100 fakes at an average of $60 per. Spread across at least a half dozen schools in three conferences and four states. Holograms, mag strips, the works.

Be smart. Transfer assets to your kids and don't spend your golden years hocking your possessions so you can qualify for Medicaid before it bankrupts your children.

So, this is perfectly fine practical advice, given the laws that we have...

...but how perverse is this? Our country doesn't just take care of people who have medical needs, including long term care. So, because of that, it's become an entire lucrative industry to help you in your later years to pretend you are very poor, despite what assets you have accumulated, by way of paper transactions, so you can avail yourself of a "safety net" at public expense if you pay experts to hide your money and belongings.

It's a total farce.

The only upside in our experience was we discovered she was diabetic. She exhibited no signs prior to the pregnancy (outside of gestational diabetes). I hear what both of you are saying. I especially understand it given who the celebrity is. But man I wish I had even a 1/10th of the information this news generated today when we went though our first one. So much of the initial grieving process was stunted for us because we framed it as something that we were only supposed to go through on our own. Something to be ashamed of. Once it became public knowledge among family and friends, we received so much support that I just felt foolish for holding everything in.

Everyone has to grieve in the own way. Even knowing all I know now, I could never broadcast that type of news in the way she did. That ain't me nor would I want it to be. Unfortunately, we live in a world that makes a big deal of all the things that celebrities do. My hope is that because everybody made a big deal about a celebrity's tragedy, the non celebs who are going through the same thing get the information they need to help them through their grieving process. It also may prevent some of the more shitty comments that are intentionally or unintentionally spoken in the aftermath.

You are still wrong.

First time I bit into a Popeye's Chicken Sandwich it was apparently how much better it was than CFAs. Far crunchier, juicier, and delicious. CFA may have slightly better bread, but that's about it really.

Now, Popeye's Spicy is better, but the mild one is better than CFA's as well. No contest.

(Of course, I'll still say that a well made Wendy's Spicy Chicken Sandwich blows CFA's Spicy out of the water... but Wendy's quality can be hit or miss. Popeye's beats a good Wendy's Spicy)

Whatever the orange-ish (colored, not flavored) one that used to come with the grilled chicken sandwich is, THAT stuff is really good.

I had to Google: Honey Roasted BBQ

Abigail Spanberger must have got the 50,000 ad bundle special. The same ad is on once if not twice every local news commercial break.

(I a) have no idea who her opponent is and b) have seen virtually no other political ads.)

via Ballotpedia
Incumbent Abigail Spanberger (D) and Nick Freitas (R) are running in the November 3, 2020, general election in Virginia's 7th Congressional District.

Spanberger was first elected in 2018 after defeating incumbent David Brat (R) 50% to 48%. Heading into the 2018 election, the 7th District had been held by Republicans since 1971. The Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee added Spanberger to its Frontline Program, which provides campaign support to vulnerable incumbents. The National Republican Congressional Committee named Freitas to the third tier of its Young Guns program, which supports battleground district candidates' campaigns.

The 7th District is one of 30 House Districts represented by a Democrat in 2020 that voted for Donald Trump (R) in 2016.

As of late June, she had a roughly 10:1 advantage in cash on hand (only 5:1 edge in receipts to date BUT he had to go through a primary to advance)

Is that law or common practice? Why wouldn't they get the going rate for that time slot?

And if it's law, I figure there'd be some way to have some dumb effery around that where a conservative/liberal owner offers someone a slot at some point in the year for, I dunno, $50, and then lets the favored campaign know about it before the other to fill up the slots

Federal law, has to do with FCC licensing, etc. It extends largely only to candidates, though parties can qualify in some scenarios. (i.e. it's for "hard money", PACs and other "soft money" don't get that bargain)

It's complex, and the bane of many a broadcasters existence (https://www.rbr.com/a-refresher-on-the-fccs-lowest-unit-charge-rules/)

edit to add: I still use the old term "lowest unit rate" though I see where now the verbiage is "lowest unit charge". Same diff.

So after a little more than 10 years, my youngest step daughter (I still call them my step daughters even though I've been divorced from their mom for over 10 years) has started talking to me again. It brought tears to my eyes. Her mom filled her head with a bunch BS about me and my step daughter stopped all contact with me back in 2010. Her older sister, I've been in contact for the whole time, but, now that her sister is talking to me again, man it feels great.

We talked for a few hours, she apologized for what she did and I told her she didn't have to, she was in her early teens so I can totally understand all the emotions she was probably going through at the time. I'm just thankful she's back and she is doing great. Some positive stuff for once after one heck of a horrible summer and early fall.

Thanks, Jon. Being a VA race I don't really care about it that much, but found it interesting just how hard she's been advertising with the same...well, frankly boring commercial.* (I have seen no ads for any MD races.) But boring is better than hearing the jingles for F.H. Furr, or 50 Floors for the fifty billionth time, or about whatever the hell is going on down in Waldorf that has a guy humming along to the circus song (da da da dee da da da da WALDORF da da da dee da...) while animated people only slightly less disconcerting than the ones in the Rock Auto commercials bounce around.

* Spanberger reminds me of a college girlfriend a HS buddy had. We couldn't come up with anything stronger for our opinion of her than that she was "pleasant to look at." Not hot, not pretty, but pleasant. I can't decide if Spanberger is even at that level. Not by any means ugly, nice smile, what have you. But at the same time very meh.

And I am NOT trying to start any sort of "post your own" deal, cause that's not really my point either.

Here's the basic social media post I saw making the rounds
SOCIAL EXPERIMENT: Go to Donald Trump's page and see how many of your friends like it and go to Joe Biden page and see how many your friends like it. Then, copy and share.

My numbers (124-7) aren't the least bit surprising to me at all, but the extra bit I thought was interested was that basically 25% of my friends had liked one or the other. That felt super high vs what I'd guess is typical for FB overall. Honestly, my point in posting about it here was more along the lines of "that percentage thing is kinda interesting, might be interesting for some of the data driven types here"

My will and advance directive weren't especially complicated (but kids were younger then so we had to worry about some complexities there) but my wife and I wanted to speak to someone, ask questions etc. so we went to an attorney near by. Had the initial visitation, we did Q&A, she asked us to think about somethings etc. and gave us paperwork to fill out. Social media - especially Twitter - is such a never-ending flow of stories and comments that run the gamut from sad/outrageous to funny/sarcastic that I am often thrown off-guard as to how to take a particular comment or headline I read. I guess the back-and-forth/whiplash of emotions you see every few seconds is a bit overwhelming to immediately discern or it's hard to re-adjust my mindset from one end of the spectrum to the other.

Case in point: a headline that popped up on my phone a couple of minutes ago reads, "Weeks after his wife's death, Kentucky man wins $200K off lottery ticket." And my first thought was, I wonder what the angle on this story is - the dude is really, really lucky?

So I had an interesting day today. Got an email from one of my uncles asking if I'd heard anything from another uncle recently. I hadn't, and neither had my mom, who is still at my house recovering from her surgery. We checked Facebook, and the last thing he posted was on the 4th. He hadn't responded to any calls or texts for several days, so we decided to drive down and pay him a visit. Me and my uncle live just outside of Austin, while the silent uncle lives south of San Antonio.

So my mom, my uncle, and I made the 85 mile trip to his place. He's known to sometimes take spontaneous camping trips, but usually tells people before he goes. We get there, and both his cars are still parked outside.

My mom went to the barns to look, while my uncle and I checked the trailer. The door was unlocked. We find him on the floor next to his bed, with very labored breathing and non-responsive. I call 911 and then held my uncle's hand and talked to him telling him help was on the way for the longest 5 minutes of my life until the paramedics showed up.

The paramedics get there, and do their assessment stuff, some of them working on him while others were asking us questions about his medical history/when was the last time anyone had talked to him/etc. I find his phone, and when I was looking at the calls and texts, he had apparently been on the floor since the 11th.

They get him to the hospital and they don't know the root cause yet. Just that they found he has pneumonia and is bad shape. He's still in the ER, supposedly being moved to ICU later.

That's been my day today. Time for vodka.

I can't give you a Tab unless you order something.

How about a Pepsi-Free?

Edit: I swear Sterlingice's post wasn't there when I posted mine. :(

Heading out in a bit to meet my cousins to hand over to them my uncle's stuff that I have.

He's been getting steadily better. Last night we got a report that he was talking, sometimes they could understand him, other times they said it was gibberish.

We started talking about it, and were thinking he might have been speaking Russian, since he was a Russian specialist in the NSA for over 30 years. To someone who didn't know or wasn't expecting to hear Russian, it would sound like gibberish.

Got a further update a little bit ago that he's now awake and does respond to his name, which is great news. The doctors told us he would have died within a few hours if we hadn't been there to find him when we did.

Should be justifiable homicide if someone is buying lottery tickets in front of you
