He just started playing on the school FB team and will be a running back...go figure.

Can someone please get real Tim Hortons coffee into K-cups and delivered to my house? How hard is this? That stuff is so good, it must have nicotine in it or something.
Step one, activated:

Step two, unlock the monopoly and let the market drive own prices. We'll see if that happens.

There's a number of variations on this particular theme, here's one that I used today in a discussion about radio formats, what constitutes "Classic" and my notion that basically "Classic Rock" = the new Oldies and Oldies = the new nostalgia format.
The Supremes "Where Did Our Love Go" is as far removed from today as Fred Astaire's "Cheek To Cheek" and Shirley Temple "Good Ship Lollipop" were from radio listeners in 1984.

My mom and dad might be out of their house for the next three months. They came down to visit me this past weekend, and brought my nieces as well. When they got home on Sunday night, they discovered that the stopper failed on the fill tank of one of the toilets, and it had flooded the house. At first they were only supposed to be out a week, until the floors got dried out. Then it was moved to a month, because all of the flooring was going to have to be replaced. Now they are telling them up to three months, because the drywall won't be able to be saved, so several walls will have to be knocked out and replaced as well. For now the insurance company is putting them up at a Residence Inn.

I don't understand. Was the insurance company responsible for the damage? Seems to me they are doing what they are supposed to do.
If it's about the Residence Inn, that's a decent enough short term solution. It's probably more expensive than finding a rental home in the mean time, so actually the company would have incentive to find such a home. But I don't know we can expect an insurance company to have those resources.
JonInMiddleGA
09-19-2013, 03:54 PM
What CR said. Unless there's something missing here, I don't see where the insurance company is failing at their responsibility.
A full-house floor replacement in a month isn't unreasonable. Finding reasonably priced reputable crew to replace multiple walls could take up to three months in a lot of places these days.
Frustrating as hell of a situation, sounds like a major PITA ... not sure how any of that is the insurers fault though, they don't come with magic wands any more than the rest of us.

I was just coming here to bitch about cable, too.
As everywhere, I have two choices: cable provider (Comcast) and fiber provider (AT&T). And, of course, this sucks and is the primary reason why our infrastructure never is upgraded: entrenched monopolies with huge entry barriers.
Shockingly, my prices are pretty similar: $85 vs $88 (pre all the crazy fees). I'm thinking of going with AT&T because they waive all but $20 of installation costs so if I aggregate that out over a year, it's basically the same $88 vs $88 and then when my prices shoot up $50 or whatever, it's time to renegotiate with each.
And, actually, I think I'm going to slowly ease in my other options. Rather than paying another $10 per month for an additional tv, that's $120 over the year. I'll put it as a "down payment" on a DVR and antenna to test out the non-cable options I could explore when the contract is up.

I must be the plumbing grim reaper. I'm up in DFW doing some work at the office of one of my clients. I'm staying with my aunt and uncle while I'm up here, and last night, we noticed water in the garage, near where the water heaters are located. We checked the water heaters, which are up on a raised platform, and they are bone dry. We wipe up the water, and notice it is slowly leaking from below the platform that the water heaters are on. We look up in the attic above, and no water is leaking anywhere up there.
My aunt called a plumber this morning, and the diagnosis is a leak in a pipe in the slab. Going to have to rip up the floor in her dining room and jackhammer the slab to get to the pipe.

It will be an increase in pay, but no where near a sales manager should be making, it's why my boss is leaving.
If I am not promoted and they bring someone else in, I am going to walk..find a new job.

During a meeting with their owner and my account person I was talking about expanding and growth and new people we had brought on, etc as it specifically related to one area of our business and an area that they specifically had developed a nice campaign for.
I explained to the person that our lead convergence rate was around 28% and we were through putting I want to say 200 new accounts a month..and we needed to step that up to around 250 new accounts a month so we might have to expand our target area. Her response was priceless, "Well we could expand the area, I suppose, but I think we would be better off if we just eliminated this one customer qualifier you have, if we did that it would increase our target audience by 3 fold and you'd have all the business you could handle"
The problem of course....the requirement was an absolute necessity (at the time) to even be able to install the product.... she could understand. She insisted "the numbers will still work and you wil still convert 25-30% and you will convert more of the good leads by throughputting more of these "unqualified leads"
Without me asking I had a new account manager the next month

Kwame Kilpatrick murdered what little hope was left in the city of Detroit. His career as mayor failed so spectacularly it led to his mother's ouster from office and left him in federal prison.
He's still more popular in Detroit than Matt Millen. People in Detroit hate Millen so much even panhandlers won't talk to him.
Just read that on FO and couldn't stop laughing. Still cringe every time I hear or see Millen on TV. Have to wonder what kind of deal he brokered with Satan to still be in the public eye; as in, a position to be listened to and respected in regards to football.

Was watching one of those Ford "Eco-Boost" commercials yesterday during football. Couple is driving one of their SUVs, talking about how they get good power AND great gas mileage, which is much better than good power OR great gas mileage, which would be like playing hide OR seek. That part was cute, but of course the tiny print comes up at the bottom:

And that's considered great gas mileage? My 95 Explorer did better than that!

I'm taking an online CPR/First Aid course through the Red Cross right now, and I can't agree with this more. It's about as well-done as I've seen an online course done, and it's still a piece of shit.all of it goes into short term memory to pass the unit assessment, then gets filed away with last week's grocery list -- at least for me.
When I took the traditional classes, I came out of them feeling like I'd learned something, and like I'd acquired skills I could actually use. Part of that was watching other people try and fail to execute the skills in the same way I would have if I'd gone first. I'm hoping the face-to-face skills demonstration portion will make up for the lack, but I doubt it.
Mostly, it's turned the sense of "I can do that" into "I read something about that once." I'm sure it makes it easier to get people certified and pumps up the numbers, but I'm not sure it says anything about how well-trained those people are.
That said, if I had to do this training annually or something for my job, I might feel differently about its utility.
gstelmack

How do you do an online CPR course? That seems like one of the worst examples for an online course: you have to actually perform CPR on a dummy, don't you?
My online-only machine learning class was pretty good, but it involved actual machine learning programming, with tests and homework that were graded. Not much different from the programming classes I took in college, except that I got to take it on my own schedule.
Drake
10-17-2013, 02:20 PM
The online portion just handles all of the classroom pieces (how do you treat hypothermia? How do you tell if someone has heat exhaustion vs. heat stroke, how do you recognize a medical emergency and what steps do you follow to give care, how many compressions and at what rate, etc.)
I still have to go in and demonstrate all the skills on a dummy. It's designed to turn an eight hour course into a 2.5 hour course. I'm just not convinced it's as effective for long-term retention with what theoretically amounts to rarely-used skills.
In all likelihood, it won't ever matter, anyway. But if I'm the one who needs CPR, I'm hoping the trained rescuer was a better online learner than I am. ;)

Yesterday afternoon, around noon, Lady H_B wanted to grab some coffee after church, so we drove back into our town, parked the car and were walking to the local coffee shop. Two stores down there is a new restaurant called "Blaze Pizza." I assume it's some kind of chain. It's like a "Chipotle" of pizzas. You walk through a long line of toppings - different sauces, cheeses, veggies, meats, spices, etc. - picking out the ones you want in a make-your-own-pizza type of way, they fire it up, call your name, you get your pizza.
We were mildly interested in the place and as we walked by we saw that it was opening on Tuesday, but there were a bunch of people inside eating. We weren't sure what was going on, but figured we'd pop in and see if we could grab a carryout menu. We step in and some guy working there - maybe a manager - asks us if we're there as part of their "friends and family" day. We told him no, we were just looking for a menu. He then proceeds to tell us all about the place, gives us a menu, introduces himself, says we're now "friends" and asks if we could help his people train by going through the line, getting a free pizza made and then eating it to tell them how it was.
While we had no intention of getting pizza and really weren't that hungry, it's hard to pass up the offer a couple of random, free pizzas. So, we took him up on the offer. It was pretty good. They have a huge variety of toppings and you can get as many as you want for no extra charge. Each pizza is about $7.
I got regular pizza sauce, mozzarella cheese, gorgonzola, chicken, italian sausage, mushrooms, jalapenos, minced garlic, roasted garlic, salt, pepper and oregano. It was quite tasty.

I don't think it will enter into the regular rotation. We have a pretty great pizza place that's a few blocks closer. So, if we want to go out for pizza we'd likely go there.
I could see stopping by this "Blaze Pizza" before/after a movie. It's on the way, is pretty affordable and was pretty good, not to mention I do feel some loyalty after how well we were treated yesterday.
I think it'd be perfect for families. Very affordable, the kids could easily split one pizza and there are enough interesting toppings and possible combinations to keep the adults happy.

Eh, I usually get pretty good deals on Papa Murphy's. Definitely think it's cheaper than Pizza Hut, Papa John's, etc. And they have a good thin crust option. The pizzas taste good and are 1000x less greasy. So I have to unwrap them and pop them in the oven. Oh, and they are actually a decent size, unlike the incredibly-shrinking "large" that I get elsewhere.
It IS easier for me to stop by there on the way home rather than having to make crust and having 2-3 different sauces and up to 10 different toppings available and prepped at home.

I do get the feeling that Papa Murphy's business plan is entirely based on proximity....like, nobody would go even a minute out of their way to buy one, and folks who don't have one near them are confused by their very existence, but folks who live in direct proximity to one seem to eat there a lot and sing their praises. Personally, I'm in the first group....I find a Papa Murphy's fills a special spot where it's both less desirable and less offensive than most delivery options....like it's going to be less greasy/salty/sweet/chemical/whatever than your delivery options, and also less flavorful. Mmmmm.

I disagree on the less flavorful, especially for combos like their Thai chicken. Their creamy garlic sauce is also very good.
Usually takes about 13-15 minutes to cook (that's doing two of them, which really they advise not to do but whatever). Somewhat longer for the stuffed pizzas.

How do you get the Papa Murphy's crust to actually BAKE? We never figured out how to cook it without burning it while still getting the dough at the center to actually bake. The dough sticks to the tray they have it on, so we could never slide it off onto our pizza stone.

Huh - I never had that problem. There have been some times where I've done the thin crust maybe a little too much or even a little not enough (again, probably due to having two of them in the oven and not rotating them), but I typically have no issues separating the crust from the tray. I'm assuming the same trays are used everywhere (white, have a bit of a non-stick coating on the top). I'm also figuring your oven works just fine. Maybe yours is doing something strange with the dough?

Not sure. Before we cook it, we can't pull it off the white tray, and that white try seems to prevent the dough from properly browning and crisping up on the outside, like it traps all the steam. So the center of the pizza ends up mushy and falling apart, you can't get good slices.
That's why we gave up on the local Papa Murphy's.

It seems like it's not taking itself too seriously and that it's portraying two hilariously washed up fighters, as opposed to two heroic figures that "still have one more fight left in them" or whatever. I mean, I'm sure that George Foreman v. Larry Holmes or Mike Tyson in 2013 would generate at least $100k for each fighter, so it's not even that far fetched.

I've got a riding mower, but I also have a self-propelled push mower as I have a fairly big area that the riding mower can't get to. I bought it almost 9 years ago, and it is finally time to do a carb rebuild on it. Looked up the parts, and rebuild kit is $28, while a new replacement carb is $40. No brainer to just do the drop and replace, instead of fiddling with a rebuild.

Is it that hard to close your car door if someone is waiting to get into the car next to you? I could maybe understand if you are having a life-changing conversation, but if you're just randomly chatting with the person in the seat next to you? I literally had to wait over 3 minutes for the person to stop talking, get out of their car, and close the door so I could open my door.
And yes, I did ask if they minded closing their door, to which they said OK, then proceeded to talk for another 30 seconds before finally exiting the car and closing the door.

Fast forward to yesterday, even though it was promised to be delivered before 10/31, no sign of it.

I work in the Renaissance Center in Detroit, which is a large complex consisting of six office towers surrounding a Marriot hotel. There's a food court, a couple of nice restaurants, shops, etc. It's General Motors world headquarters.
There is a anime convention going on here right now and through the weekend. The place is teeming with people dressed in all sorts of costumes, mainly anime stuff, but also computer game characters, my little ponies, I saw an Ultra Man and many others.
I love this weekend.

I'm trying really hard not to be mad at my wife. We have an 8 month old puppy. He recently dug up a small patch of carpet in my sons playroom. Nothing major and when you adopt a puppy you expect these sort of things.
Now like any other puppy, he gets into plenty of stuff, especially if we arent constantly watching him. Well, my wife decided to go upstairs this morning to change the baby and left the puppy downstairs. He proceeded to tear up a very large patch of carpet, this time in our living room.
I wanted nothing more than to ask my wife why she left him unattended, given he is a puppy and is prone to stuff like this. I didn't sine I know she is already annoyed about it and feels bad. Me berating her will only make it worse and accomplish nothing, but man, I am fuming over her lack of judgement.
Our house is also a new construction, less than a year old, and with a puppy and 2 kids under 4 it is aging much faster than I would like.
Time to find a carpet repair place to see if they can fix it.
cuervo72
11-12-2013, 08:43 AM
Heh. Yeah, we have two kids, four cats, and a fairly old dog that has been having issues with going recently. Our carpets need to be completely overhauled. It's been the case for a while, but no use in doing it now.
gstelmack
11-12-2013, 08:51 AM
Yeah, kids and dogs, you'll just be repainting and replacing carpet once the kids hit, I dunno, maybe their teens? Not worth doing before then.
One thing that helps is find toys the puppy likes to chew on, and keep him plenty supplied. I buy new toys about every other month to keep them interested, and if I go too long something gets destroyed.

So I was at my night job (serving) about a week ago, and was about to take an order for a table. We wear a short apron around our waist to carry our order book, pens, etc. It has three pockets, right to left. I keep my pens in the right pocket and my order book in the left.
So I'm taking an order, and I reach in and take out my order book and a pen. I somehow misgrabbed the pen as I pulled it out. It landed on my order book (held about chest high by this time) and rolled off to the left... and fell perfectly into the now vacant left pocket, through a hole that even Luke couldn't have shot womprats through.
This happened right in front of a table, and they didn't even notice. I actually asked them if they noticed. Then we all stared off into space, in wonder at the world around us. Okay, maybe not.

When you google some technical problem you are having, and you find a thread in a support forum discussing it and 98% of the posts after the initial post describing your problem are people posting "Yeah, me too. Are these peer/same age friend crazies or old elderly family crazies?
We have a group that always has a Christmas party and exchanges gifts (not really sure why...everyone complains about how burdensome the process of gift selection is, but I digress) its pretty basic except for these 2 single females that are very picky, and always make it a point to critique every gift they have ever been given... Last year my wife bought each of them gift cards to Adam & Eve...the rest of the party appreciated it, even if these two did not.

Are these peer/same age friend crazies or old elderly family crazies?
The main crazy is my sister-in-law who I hate. She's 10 years older than me and has these ridiculous notions about what "should" and "shouldn't" be with no taste that I can tell, though she's into the alternative remedies/"natural medicine.". She's an ungrateful woman who doesn't even have the decency to call to say "thank you" when you send a birthday gift, plus she thinks that the only reason I have my job is because she's discriminated against because she has no college degree (or high school equivalency). She claims she's an artist but she's not any good at that, either (IMO). She treats my brother like crap and is a terrible parent (well, if I were a parent, I'd do things very differently). I don't even know where to start for her.
Then there's my dad. He's just hard to shop for. I usually get him some outdoor equipment type thing but I've done that the last few years, and he doesn't need anything new (all his stuff is in good shape). And my brother, who I know what I want to get, but can't figure out how to do it (I want to get him the new Sandman stuff, but I can't figure out which is the "best" version to get, nor can I figure out if there's a way to pre-buy and get them shipped...).
So weirdness all around.

Dola,
I know it's f'd up for me to say that she's a bad parent. But I've met her 16 year-old son. I see how she treats my brother. And I see how she acts with my 6 year-old nephew (my brother's son). I definitely don't agree with some of her choices, but I think it's worse that she'll countermand what my brother says, basically makes my brother's opinion not matter for anything.
So while I have no room to say I'd be any better as a parent, that's just how I see her..

Awesome
Diamond Ring (http://scranton.craigslist.org/jwl/4210925687.html)
For sale I have a 1.5ct total weight engagement ring set in 14K white gold. The ring is in like new condition, only worn for a short period of time by Satan herself. Comes with the original box. Very pretty ring with a lower setting so the diamonds won't snag on everything. Diamonds along the sides and in the channel setting show off light from all sides. Originally purchased from Littman's for a sum of money far greater than I am comfortable admitting.
Warning: ring may be cursed as it tends to leave a path of destruction behind it. Possible events associated with this ring include but are not limited to: damage sustained to house, vehicle, heart, downed powerlines, fallen trees, and swarms of locus. I would highly recommend taking action to counter the whirlwind of bad mojo that surround this piece of jewelry. Should consider having curse removed by voodoo priest or something before presenting to loved one. Other than that a very nice piece of jewelry.
Looking to sell this soon before it brings any more bad luck into my life and I'd rather have cash. If not sold by Christmas I plan to throw it into the fires of Mordor.

Pet Peeve:
When you google some technical problem you are having, and you find a thread in a support forum discussing it and 98% of the posts after the initial post describing your problem are people posting "Yeah, me too. Anyone know how to fix this?" Sometimes they will add, "THIS PHONE/COMPUTER/PRINTER/WHATEVER IS USELESS TO ME IF IT KEEPS BREAKING LIKE THIS! SOMEBODY PLEASE TELL ME HOW TO FIX THIS!"
I know that there is some small value to having a sense of how widespread the problem is. But it is a VERY small value relative to how much it annoys me.
Along the same lines you also get the ones where the OP comes back and is like "I got it now, was able to fix it!" and then not tell you how they fixed it.
