Re: recruiting help?
The amount of points is determined by how many games you have that week. If you don't play any games, you're going to have a lot more points than if you play 3.
As far as recruiting at small schools, I suggest doing a search here as there are plenty of informative threads on the subject. There are two ways really. One if the non-cheap, more difficult way. The other is the cheap and easy way. To have success the non-cheap way, two things are your friend, municipal/local players and junior college players. If a player is municipal or local you have a much better chance of getting them if they want to play close to home. You can sometimes snag a decent 3* JC player at small schools as well. That's all I got for now, but like I said do a search and you'll find loads of information.Fan of....

Re: recruiting help?
I think I said this somewhere else but the ABL is your best friend. You can find a lot of 2* or 3* recruits that average a solid 9 points and what not that fit your system. There are a lot of little things about recruiting because recruiting on CHoops is very complex so it is very hard to explain recruiting without actually being there with you showing you things.“If you’re true to yourself, you’re going to be true to everyone else.”Comment

Re: recruiting help?
Just to back up what has been said. Make use of the ABL. You can find some nice players. Also recruit within your means. The local kids are easier to land then most. JuCo players can give you an instant boost. Look for 3* and even 2* that have big school listed. Most big school want sign them and you can sometimes move in and get them. This is much easier once you have won some games and made some noise in the tournament. The best thing anyone can tell you is to make full use of the ABL. Play games with players that you may want to sign. I take all the shoots with players I target. I don't worry so much about stats. I use to to weed out the crap to find the players. I also like to recruit players and move them around. I like to move big small forwards to power forward. I move big 2-guards to small forward. I also recruit players that fit a system. If you like to shoot 3's then find those players vs slashers who can't shoot. Good luck man recruiting gets easier as you go.Relax, it's just a video game!Comment

Re: recruiting help?
One stupid question about ABL: when a player will join your team ? At the beginning of thev1st season or at the end of the 1st season ?
Could you give me some more information how to recruit a player ?
I have some confusion about the timing...
Thanks

Re: recruiting help?
Some nitty gritty tips on recruiting.
Tip #1: As others have said, stay Municipal/Local and sometimes venture to Regional(if you only have one scholarship
Tip #2: Play/Coach ABL games to identify hidden gems(A lot of 20/10 F/Cs are 3 stars and rated 200 and below). Generally what you'll find is that 4/5 star players are well rounded, while 2/3 star players are normally good at one thing(Def/Pass/Reb/3pt).
Tip #3: Make your team well-rounded, what worked for me(I coached, not played mind you) was I'd go with a Passing PG(normally 4.0APG and up in ABL) Scoring SG(10.0PPG and up), defensive SF, reb PF(10.0 RPG and up), and a double double C. You can't always find these players but tried to stick to that.
Tip #4: Don't shy away from World Recruits(if you want a really cheap way, you can normally create them and recruit them, i admit to doing this once because there were 0 scoring SGs) Every now and then you can get a 4 or 5 star WOR recruit by hammering until the final day of recruiting.
Tip #4: This is essential, Charisma, Charisma, Charisma. First thing I upped on my coach is Charisma, and both my assistants have high charisma(both are A+ currently), this will give your actions more effect.
Tip #5: JUCO's are nice, and they're good filler, but generally I only go after them in the final five weeks of recruiting.
Tip #6: Players don't always come in at the right position, I recruited a 4 star SG at Wisconsin(not the greatest example for a small school but still) he was 6'10" and 240 lbs. Immediately moved him to PF and he was a monster for four years.
Other useful tips: Use your attribute points in Charisma, then Teaching, then Discipline. Charisma will help you recruit as previously stated, Teaching/Discipline both effect development.
If you go to a big school, and don't want that prized five star recruit leaving early, manually set his training so they don't get the all-around bonus to awareness. Generally this will shave 3-4 points off his awareness rating per year(that he'd gain on basic all-around training), Those with high awareness go pro(Probably cause they're aware there is a big pay day awaiting them)
Also spread your recruiting out, I like to have only 3 scholarships per year and recruit/redshirt accordingly.
hope this helps you enjoy the game like i do.Last edited by Suntan Superman; 03-24-2011, 09:47 AM.Support Local Sports

Re: recruiting help?
Thanks for the very helpful info. There seems to be some that's stayed the same since CH2k5, but plenty that has changed. This has really helped me bring myself up to speed.Comment

Re: recruiting help?
Some tips I use are: (based on cosed legacy or starting as a small school)
1) Recruit within your means: By this I mean recruit players you can get. If you are starting out with a small school then you are not going to land 4* so don't waste your time. Most of the time starting out 3* will be a task. If you are using a power school then you can sign anyone.
2) Make full use of the ABL: This is your best friend as a small school coach. You get a chance to play with a player before you sign him. You uncover info on the player. You also get 40 points per game played/coached even if you play 1 minute halves. This 40 point per game boost in recruiting time is applied during the season and can be the difference between a good class vs a bad one since you have a small amount of time each season to recruit with small schools.
3) Recruit to you style: You should always recruit based on the style you play. I like to have 3 guys on the court that can knock down a 3. I like my PF to have a good mid-range game. I like my centers to be big, rebounding beast. Any style you choose to play you should always recruit to that. I feel like that should always be a given.
4) Move guys around: Like said before some guys are at the wrong positions. I have seen the 6'8" SG's, the 6"10" SF's, 6'5" PG's and so on. I love recruiting these players because when you get them at the right positions they become beast. I like to recruit the 6'8" or taller SF and move them to PF. They have mid-range game which fits my style. The best player I ever had was a 6'11" PF with an amazing 3pt rating who I recruited as a SG. He was a Durant clone.
5) Winning games helps: If you win games then it helps you recruit. This means winning regular season and tournament games. Going deep in the NCAA's with a small school will give you a boost.
6) JuCo's and world recruits can be a friend: I know some here say it is cheap to recruit world recruits due to the cpu teams not fighting you for them. I have yet to sign a 3* world recruit who was way better then a 3* US recruit. Most are in the mid 60's to low 70's and never progress that much. I have also found the JuCo's to be a good option with small schools as well. The only problem is you get them for a small amount of time vs 4 years with a high school player.
These are just a few tips I go by. As I move up to bigger schools then my recruiting style changes. This game is so deep when it comes to recruiting so it takes time to get good at it.Relax, it's just a video game!Comment

Re: recruiting help?
I have read the information in this and other threads and have taken it to heart. But putting it to practice seems to have been a different story, so instead of posting a new thread I thought I'd enter this one and hopefully get some feedback.
I used to be a really good recruiter in 2k5 and 2k6, but thankfully things have gotten more difficult and I have a lot of catching up to do. I just simmed through my first season with Elon to attempt to get to know the recruiting system. And good night! This is what I ended up with: a 3* world recruit that ended up being 70 overall. A 2* local PF that ended up being 60* overall. One scholarship unused and about 4 walk ons that were total crap. I had some sure failures and already mucked up recruiting for next season, where I have 5 scholarships to offer. I got pretty frustrated, but also learned a lot.
I'm going to post my current recruiting thoughts in the hope that others can either tell me I have the right idea or steer me towards the right idea.
1) I tend to favor shooting/skills as priorities. I'm curious about whether I should change one of those to rebounding or something else. I'm also curious about how changing recruiting priorities influences what recruits I get.
2) I pay attention to ABL stats. I sim through the ABL games, and I tend to favor those produced stats over what my scout finds. I would really like to have my players to be of good height and average at least 10 points per game. I like my guards to shoot at least 33% from 3 point range, if not better. I like my power forwards and centers to average at least 8 or 9 rebounds. I'm happy with my PG can average 3.5-4.5 assist. Unfortunately, my 2* PF that was rated 60 overall met these requirements.
3) I only target players with at least something like 65% or greater interest and stay local. My first year this means I'm left with recruiting a number of 2* players from my city of local area. However, any recruit I targeted tended to get run on by other local small schools. There's a lot of them in NC, and in many cases if I was a little bit behind I could not catch up (even when priorities were close to home/playing time). I lost a number of my initial targets in early recruiting, and oftentimes I could not get out my scholarship offer before other schools seemed to get ahead.
4) I try and target a back up or two for each of my prime targets. However, I'm not entirely sure what to do with episodes like my second year were I had 5 scholarships. That's a lot of backups to target! Also, I'm not entirely sure when I should start weaving in targeting sophomores and juniors for recruiting. I'm assuming the answer is "it depends."
5) There were still some things I was rusty on. I targeted too many players I wasn't seriously pursuing. I stuck with recruits I had no shot at for too long, including scheduling visits when in my mind I knew. I didn't wait to raise interest so I could schedule multiple campus visits during the same week. Instead, I scheduled 3 campus visits separately. Those are mistakes that kept me from pursing targets I should have.
I sucked my first year, but I'm learning. I appreciate the wealth of feedback you all have posted over the years -- this place is a great resource. Any feedback on how I'm doing would be great. I'm enjoying how tough it is to start with a small school, but I've got a way's to go.Comment

Re: recruiting help?
Small update after my massive wall of text:
Started again just simming through a season with Sacramento State. I think I'm starting to get a better grasp on things, as I did manage to nab three 3* players and one 2* player. Two PFs (73!!! and 69), though one will be moved to center, one JC FR PG (64 overall unfortunately, but still get 3 years), and one SG. Oh that shooting guard...I wish I had gone for someone else, as I trusted his stats from the ABL too much instead of what the scout was telling me. The result? 50 overall with an F for potential.
And I managed to land that class while finishing with a meager 7 wins and an 11 game losing streak in conference play.
What was the big difference? Focusing on who I scouted in the ABL. It was worth my time. My two beastly overal players both did outstanding. Heck, the 69 guy went 13 points/15 rebounds through the ABL.
Six scholarships this year. But from the looks of the recruiting class I'm going to probably not need to use more than 3. I still need a sharpshooter, and there are NONE out there this year. Ick.Comment

Re: recruiting help?
Excellent posts all around. I will just add my strategy when I was at a small school (Samford, OVC). If I have like 2 scholarships, I will focus on 2-3 players who are my top priorities for the in season window. I will not settle for 2* or mediocre 3* but try to get the best players possible (ie starting at a reasonable % and without power school as a competitor). If it fails (quite often!), I will wait for the 5 final weeks. Here, it is possible to grab the leftovers and land some pretty good players (quite often as good as the ones I missed on earlier). You can try to look for those players already after the in-season window closed.Comment
