Kind of like Torchlight/Diablo/Titan Quest - you can only slow down time though so some of the battles are crazy.. but in a good way. Haven't gotten too far yet.. but it has puzzles to solve, ways to craft, etc..

Beautiful game too... this was basically a two man team programming.

Has anyone tried Card Hunter?

It looks like it might be something I find appealing, D and D style tactical combat on a "board" where each character is equipped with a hand of cards to expend in combat and maneuvers.

If I find a game appealing, there are usually some like minded nerds around here.

I've played plenty of Card Hunter. It's definitely fun and worth playing, but it also never truly captures my interest all the way...I always get bored after a few days, forget about it for a few months, and then rediscover it for another couple days of fun, rinse, repeat.

Even if it turns out you don't enjoy the game it's totally worth checking out for the design and humor, which should totally appeal to any old-school nerd.

I think a big part of the problem for me is that despite it ostensibly being a loot based collectible card game, no matter how many cards I'd get or adventures I'd complete my characters never felt like they progressed (or even played slightly differently) from the instant I started. The presentation and management/inventory part of the game makes it feel like all this grand progression is happening, but every time you actually start playing the meat of the game feels pretty much exactly the same.

Been out of the game a little while, but sports sims aren't doing it for me in my downtime and I'm jonesing for a good 4x game... Is Endless Legend the obvious choice? Anyone think Age of Wonders is better? I have Civ 5, so Civ BE/Galactic Civ seem not to be worth the upgrade.

I'm pretty up to date on my Paradox games, but is there something similar in that vein I've missed? Where did people end up on Banished? Was it as fun as early Tropico games, or did it have limited replay value?

I agree I still play it a lot, just suffers from the same general problem I have with Civ games - the early to mid game is awesome (and there are some good later game scenarios), but the end of the game always feels like I've either won or lost 100 turns in advance and I'm playing out the string at that point, so I always end up with a ton of saved games I never really want to go back to.

See, I like that feeling in games. There are times in Eu or CK where I took an early aggressive stance, and I can tell that a decade or so into the game that I'm in such a strong position that I'm good, you know? But I use that to push myself to do increasingly dominant stuff

I feel exactly the same way about Civ, Bishop. Have since Civ 3. For whatever reason, once I got myself into a game in Civ 2, I was never letting go until you pried it from my cold, dead hands. Now...not so much.

If you have Civ 5 and all the expansions (Brave New World, essentially), then you don't need Beyond Earth. I was rather disappointed by it, actually.

I love Civ 5 but I do hate how the AI has never really gotten better over the years. The computer uses the same strategy and tactics. And increasing the levels isn't increasing their ability to outplay you, just their ability to cheat.

RainMaker
08-04-2015, 04:07 AM
Also agree with the late game stuff mentioned above. I've wanted them to increase the cost for units later in the game to discourage you from having 25 units to deal with each turn. Maybe a penalty of sorts for outdated units as well.

Wouldn't mind less of a penalty for razing a city too. Maybe allow people to move the population to one of their existing cities for a cost. There are just so many useless small cities the computer builds up during the game that it becomes a drag later on. Either that or just have the computer be a little more conservative with setting up new cities.

There are times in Eu or CK where I took an early aggressive stance, and I can tell that a decade or so into the game that I'm in such a strong position that I'm good, you know? But I use that to push myself to do increasingly dominant stuffBut EU and CK have the badboy rating, and a much more level playing field. I guess you can dominate on the fringes (take Spain/England and go dominate the Americas), but even with a France as long as you focus on Europe there's always a country or coalition that can challenge you. Similarly in CK, except the risk of a large empire breaking apart is even higher. Militarily even if you're a whole level or two higher that's like a 10% or 20% advantage in a fight. And if you can absolutely dominate with manpower you still have to pick and choose your spots because raising and keeping a standing army will bankrupt you (plus you have increasingly punitive attrition if you just throw a huge army on the offensive.)

In Civ I find it incredibly engaging and challenging during the world building/discovering phase, but by the time it gets to the "modern era" and like infantry or marines or tanks I'm usually so far ahead (or, occasionally, behind) that there's almost no doubt who will win. And it's not just militarily - one civilization is usually the most technologically advanced, produces the most shields/gold per turn, and has enough of an advantage they can just dominate wonder-building, or ally with a plurality of the city states, and increase their advantage that way. Maybe there's two dominant civ's, or a 3rd within shouting distance, but a whole bunch that are just complete also-rans at that point.

Vince, Pt. II

I think that's really the major problem with strategy games in general, and 4X games specifically though, right? Heuristics is hard, and AI is still a pipe dream. I've thought a lot about how I would code difficulty into a game if I did (former computer programmer, always wanted to make a game), and I think I would try to put in different strategies for each level of AI, and simply make sure that each strategy had a different degree of effectiveness. So you didn't see homogeneity between games even when ratcheting up the difficulty level. But that's a lot of extra work, and it honestly doesn't really address the problem: that over time, these games are somewhat not replayable, because the AI is going to largely do the same thing each time.

I had mentally spitballed coding in a sort of weighted random factor into the decision making process, but that's hard to do as well, because you not only have to account for specific instances, but you have to then determine optimal and sub-optimal decisions and weigh choices...and that's assuming you have a somewhat binary choice. It's a nightmare.

Vince, Pt. II
08-04-2015, 12:40 PM
I think the correct answer is 'multiplayer,' but that's not an option for many people for tons of different reasons - time management being chief among them. Getting everyone together at the same time is hard, and otherwise you're waiting on that one guy to finish his damned turn...

...and that's not to mention the people who simply do not want to play multiplayer.

But that's a lot of extra work, and it honestly doesn't really address the problem: that over time, these games are somewhat not replayable, because the AI is going to largely do the same thing each time. Of course, but I think there are other similar games that do some things better, and I also think that the comprehensiveness of Civ works against it at that point. A big part of Civ's appeal is that you can play at different speeds, you can play on different size maps, and it can be played by novices to experts, so by default they have to simplify some things so they'll scale pretty well regardless of how the game's being played (and they do an amazing job of that.) And like I said, they have some great later-game scenarios, but if you're starting from the ancient era and advancing to the modern era, it's really unlikely that most civilizations will be close enough, especially because it seems like scientific advances come much faster and the increase in unit military power seems to be greater as well (especially in terms of mobility - even if I have 8 archers 2 turns in, I'm not really going to be able to press that advantage against all but a really close neighbor. But give me 8 tanks (maybe pair them with a few bombers) before anyone else has them, once you have roads and rails everywhere, and holy shit you can blitzkrieg almost anyone.)

One place where other games do kind of run circles around them is having factions that play differently, and legitimately different paths to victory. Civ has done a little better opening other paths to victory, but every civ still has to have the same broad base - you can't have one civ that's the most technologically advanced, but has poor cities and a low population, or one with a great military but is technologically behind. This is in large part due to how the tech tree is set up. I know they're not technically 4x, but I actually really like the way that EU/CK do this in their games - yes you can target specific things to research, but advances also spread by osmosis, which makes sense. It needs to be balanced so there's enough incentive to put money into research, but if my neighbor figures out a better way to approach markets, or how to build railroads, eventually it should spread to me. Civ doesn't have the province system, but you could do something like "Once 70% of Civilizations have a technology, everyone else automatically gets that tech", allowing certain civs to take more specific paths towards their goals while not falling hopelessly behind in other areas. Having a bigger tech tree with various branches where you can't actually finish all f them in any single game wouldn't hurt (and I know they went down this route a little bit with the emphasis on social policies.)Civ BE didn't grab me at all.

Pandora -especially with the DLC expansion is fantastic.
Endless Legend with DLC expansion is also a fantastic 4x.
I've also enjoyed Sorcerer King and Gal Civ III from Stardock.Let's be honest on BE - it'll probably improve markedly just like every Civ going back to #2 maybe? That's half the appeal of Endless Legend - yeah, maybe it's last year's game of the year, but all of these 4x games take a DLC or two to really reach their potential.

You'd put Pandora over Gal Civ at this point? A lot of people in the reviews for the Stardock games seem to be complaining they're buggy or a DLC or two away from reaching their potential.

Yeah, that's a pretty good word for it.

Just reading that, it feels as though the likeliest outcome is a grand idea that ultimately fails in execution. It's a darned good concept, I just don't have much confidence that anybody could actually pull it off.

(that's not shot at Paradox either, I have a similar concern about Fallout 4. It has the potential to be the last game I'd likely ever need to buy ... and I have grave concerns that the potential will exceed the reality by an uncomfortably large factor)

I was simply trying to return a game that had gone on sale 12 hours after I purchased it simply to repurchase it.

This is a great little game. As goofy as the graphics are (which I love), the gameplay and physics are actually really good. The only thing that I'm struggling with is finding the right difficulty level. I played my last game on 60, and it felt OK, so I'll try a couple more games there and see how it goes. Wonderful game.

Kind of reminds me of Blood Bowl.

I downloaded the demo for this: nice little game and ended up buying it for £10.99.

Glad I did, it's a immediately fun game, but getting through the leagues it does require different plans the more you get promoted.

It's still early access, but worth it IMO, definitely got that 'one more game' addictive vibe to it.

I've been playing Mordheim: City of the Damned on Early Access for awhile now. The latest update last week added progression for your warband, so now it actually feels like a 'game'. Still heavily unbalanced and the difficulty ramps up considerably after your first skirmish... hell, I usually get crushed in my first skirmish.

I never played the tabletop version, but it's got some great features that may also have been there in tabletop - injuries that leave your men maimed - peg legs, eye patches, etc. - and random chaos mutations that turn your cultists into living weapons.

I would love to see these guys tackle Necromunda.

Not just a checkpoint system, if only it was. A timed saved system with only 1 save. Save in a bad spot, restart the level. Mismanage the horrible gas mask mechanic, restart the level.

Its an OK game, but there are a lot of fundamentally idiotic design decisions that can be infuriating.

Steam controller and Link came this week. The controller I would give a B+. The standard analog stick and buttons are fine, though their position isn't ideal. I'll get used to it quickly though and it will be fine. I haven't found a really good use for the haptic pad things yet, but they show promise. Overall I'm happy enough with the controller though I'm not sure I could recommend it over a standard XBox controller.

The Link was a write off. I wanted to use it wirelessly but it was basically unplayable for anything but turn-based games like Civ. I wired it up to my router, leaving my computer still over wireless, and that improved things but it still wasn't perfect. I returned it two days after it arrived.

Overall I'm happy enough with the controller though I'm not sure I could recommend it over a standard XBox controller.

I've found the touch pads work phenomenally when being used as trackball emulation on the right pad. It's easily the best controller for first person shooters, though I'll still stick to mouse and keyboard for them. Some third person action games like Dark Souls II work really well with a trackball as well. I still haven't gotten comfortable using thumbstick emulation on the right pad yet, though I have been paying attention to people who are working on settings for it (https://youtu.be/DnLiwGFQR_Y). The settings on customizing the touchpads are quite daunting too, so it's probably going to take some time. For now I'm going to stick with an XBox controller for games that rely on them though as my experience with Transformers: Devestation using the Steam Controller.

The two biggest positives I have are the grip buttons and being able to use it for mouse based games. Hopefully grip buttons become commonplace on controllers in the future, I've been playing Rocket League with Boost and Jump on the grips and I love being able to use them while still being able to make adjustments to the camera if I need to. With the mouse emulation I've been using it for web browsing and playing Star Realms and other turn while lounging, which has probably been most of my use with it so far.

A couple things I've read about people doing that are interesting is using the left trigger soft pull to aim down sites in shooters with a full pull being aim down sights but lowering aim sensitivity. Also read people raving about the gyro controls for aiming, though haven't tried them since I was never a big fan of it on the Wii U gamepad.

So unbelievably this is my first run-in with the Steam cloud stuff involving save games files and not just game licenses... I reinstalled Rogue Legacy after a format for a few months ago, and was looking to continue where I left off... only to find that I was starting all over. Some quick Googling revealed that Rogue Legacy was not a game that utilized the cloud for save game files.

In the past, I used to backup my save games folder before a format but stopped doing that once the majority of games I played became available on Steam. Is it just me that expected the cloud to be used once a game is being sold through Steam? Kind of disappointing that I have to Google the game to figure it out.

I took it as them wanting their best deals to last the week due to all the competition that's come up in the last couple years. I think it's one of the best designed and interesting and stressful and fun indy games in the last few years.

Here, let's go over why:

1). It's extremely detailed, with a ton of animals, plants, food sources, and most importantly, things that want to kill you. The ecology far exceeds anything you'd see in a lot of games.

2). The game mechanics are easy to figure out but very difficult to master. and you never really master. Expect to die early and often.

3). Did you ever play a game like Angband and then as you are playing, and you think you know everything, you suddenly encounter something brand new? A new item, a new creature a new type of land? Same here.

4). Don't starve is very smooth, and very flavorful. Oozes flavor massively.

5). If you can find it, you can unlock a campaign mode with increasingly difficult campaigns.

6). You have caves, an underworld, and more to explore if you want. Or you can just skip by it.

7). Lots of patches are released, adding game content for free. Great mods for the game too.

Nice Job!

I'm still stuck on it. Not sure I can go any further with it. You're right, it's a fun little game.

and I only found 13 of 20 trinkets...

The Gravitron and tower were oh so ballbustingly hard

i put it down for months. then recently got back to it. like all platformers, some nights you die repeatedly quickly. put it down then. other nights you are IN THE ZONE!!!!!! Play til you complete a level on those nights :)

other indie games I highly recommend...
Limbo - gorgeous moody puzzle platformer.
The Ship - muliplayer frag game where you have a target and are someone else's target in the era of the titannic. your weapons are things you find on the ship :)
Sir YOu Are HUnted - you are on an island being hunted by robots dressed as british foxhunters. RUN!!!!!!! multiplayer is especially fun especially ganging up on the bots

Just finished up Life is Strange(picked up during Thanksgiving). Jesus, what an experience that game was. It starts out rather slow and you wonder where it's all leading, but the last couple episodes are phenomenal. The final one was absolutely amazing, I don't know how they pulled off what they were going for, but they did. It hits on all cylinders.

Definitely a Telltale style adventure game, so use that as a guide for if you'd like it or not. I think it easily tops any Telltale game, but the base gameplay mechanics are identical.

I didn't know if I should start a new thread but...has anyone else noticed that if you click on your Steam user name on the right side of the title bar of the Steam app, and then click account details, you get someone else's account info? I am looking at someone's Steam wallet, purchase history, contact info... I can't get to my own info -- it's as if the accounts get mixed up although my games library is accurate.

Other weird things are happening too -- no wishlist, no cart. I went to Big Picture mode, and then exited, and suddenly the language changed to Spanish.

Clearly something's wrong and just wondering if it's my account/computer or if others are having similar issues.

Is something wrong with Steam? (Warning: Security Issues) [Don't post usernames] - NeoGAF (http://neogaf.com/showthread.php?t=1162196)
What we know so far

Most likely an error in the way Steam caches pages.
People are able to access random Steam profiles and see compromising information, account names, emails, last 2 digits of credit card, paypal email address, purchases, etc.
No changes can be made to the effected account, no purchases can be made. Any evidence to the contrary is, as of yet, unsubstantiated.
It's been advised to not access Steam URLs, including the client, until we have more information.
Do not post account names you see, huge security risk.
Do not log into Steam to unlink your Paypal. If you feel the need, can be done from the actual Paypal website.
Reminder: Steamdb is not affiliated with Valve in any way.

Good, because I finally got around to buying Sunless Sea and am hoping to get a good run in with it tonight! (Tried it a little last night, and it's gonna take me a little getting used to the keyboard aspect. Although I think it's really having the 2 hands so close together that's bothering me, so maybe I'll just plug in a mouse for that game.)

I assume I'll also buy Dungeon of the Endless eventually. Idk if it's Steam or Paradox's fault, but I just get so annoyed any time I buy a Paradox title trying to figure out exactly what's in which version that I go through with less than 50% of my intended transactions with them :)

100% agreed on the lack of interest in the sale. This new way I just typed in the name of the few games I was targeting, and bought them or didn't. The old way I'd scroll through the whole list and at least look at, if not outright impulse buy, new games I'd never heard of. Even if I "missed" a flash sale if people were talking about one I'd give it a look see and maybe add it to my wishlist or KAEO for it during the next sale. So it doesn't expose new games to me, and it goes on so long I *know* I will be able to buy almost any title on sale within the next 6 months, instead of the past where if I wanted a game I might just pay full price because there was a decent chance I'd miss it when it was on sale anyway.

Mostly, I like the world they've created. I've found the map to be fun to explore. It's bleak, but captivating. The encounters are a bit too clumped, but it's nothing major. The leveling system is simple, but still offers plenty of directions on builds.

I've also died a few times on normal, which doesn't happen often in these types of games.

I've been in Grim Dawn's early access for like 6 months too, and it's probably finally at the point where I'd feel comfortable recommending it, now that it's content complete. I'll also echo JPhillips in saying that the difficulty's ramped up a bit compared to Diablo, and I've died plenty of times (especially after passing level 35 or so)...the combat is a little closer to Path of Exile than Diablo, as bosses/mobs can require you to actually put some (slight) thought into when to use your skills, and some movement/dodging is often required during combat, as opposed to Diablo where you generally just click and wait.

It's kind of hard to describe what makes Grim Dawn different from other games of this type, other than to say it just plays well.

Grim dawn has guns....not all that different from a range weapon in any other game, but it does "feel" like your character is shooting a firearm. There are factions within the game that will reward you with bounties and side quests aside from the main story. The maps are large (I don't think they're random, other than the few "roguelike" dungeons), with lots of area to explore and entrances into smaller off-shoot dungeons/caverns/caves, which allows for more of an "exploring" feel than you get from the randomly generated maps of similar games. There is a healthy degree of collection/crafting if you're a completist.

I've heard it described as halfway between the click-and-forget of Diablo 3, and the relative complexity of Path of Exile, which seems like a fair comparison.

For whatever it's worth, I believe at one time they were planning on releasing a demo near the 1.0 release date, but I have no idea where that plan is at now.

It's been so long since I played TL 2. It's similar to Diablo but has much more in the way of character design and leveling and isn't so linear.

Watch some gameplay videos on youtube, that should give you an idea about the game.

I also caved and bought Grim Dawn. I can echo most of the sentiments above - it just feels right. The setting, the SFX/music, the character building. They provide an incentive for lore and exploration as well, which helps to keep you from just blindly smashing everything. I'm only a couple hours in and haven't seen any of the difficulty noted by some, but I've definitely started to see creatures that make me use my health potions. Interesting things that are different from prior entries:

-Multi-classing. When you create a character, you simply create a character. You don't choose your class until your first level up. At level ten, you can select a new class to start putting skill points into, or you can simply keep pouring points into your original class.

-Exploration incentives. You can find shrines out in the world, and when you cleanse them (by sacrificing items to them), you get a point of Devotion. The Devotions are spent like skill points on a map of constellations. Each point unlocks a star, and your selection of stars is gated. The first constellation you have access to is a five pointed hub that unlocks branches of constellations around you, and each branch is themed. Most stars provide a passive stat bonus, but some provide actual skills or abilities. I've only found two so far, so I can't speak to the longevity of this decision making process, but I like it thus far.

-Moving around in the world feels fluid. In games like Diablo, the acts are very stark and different; even moving from zone to zone sometimes felt like a very abrupt change to different geography. It always felt very video-gamey to me. It's still early yet for me in Grim Dawn, but the world seems to flow together much more seamlessly between zones.

One gripe I do have about Grim Dawn is though I noted above you use can use firearms, it doesn't seem that they're properly balanced. They're not particularly restricted to any class (though I think the demolitionist gets some bonuses), and it seems like they're perhaps purposefully 30% lower in damage than melee weapons. Though I was able to use a firearm early on with a couple character builds I've eventually always ended up feeling forced to play with a melee weapon, because I eventually find an melee artifact/item that is literally two to three times as powerful as any firearm I can find.

For example, the idea of using two pistols is neat, and there are specific skills and armor/items to buff up the build....except your chances of finding a single decent pistol (let alone two) seem to be astronomical past the first dozen levels or so, which kind of ruins the whole idea. There are seemingly a couple other builds/ideas, and/or features to each class that appear to run along that same line, where the concept sounds neat, but is crucially underpowered in execution, or where the rareness of the related items/loot doesn't allow you to properly play the build you're trying to make.

That said, the developers have said they're going to spend a good part of the next couple months before the official release doing testing and balancing, so hopefully that will all change for the better in the future.

One thing I thought was fantastic about DD was the lighting in the dungeons. Never have dungeons seemed so creepy to me.

Just remember to keep plenty of lamp oil on hand.

Yeah! The expansion was especially good at that. Did anybody come close to beating the Daimon boss in the Dark Arisen DLC? Despite all my hours put into that game I didn't even come close....it seemed nearly impossible, like you'd have to slog through three straight hours of combat AND hope to got really lucky. Maybe I was missing something crucial, though.

A hint from Grim Dawn that took me way too long to figure out: the #3 skill on your hotbar is mapped to your middle mouse button.

It's funny, I'm at level 22 and I have found nothing but pistols. And I'm playing a full on melee build.

I picked up Titan Quest tonight and absolutely love it. It's been a long long time since I've played these types of games, and was scared there would be alot of buttons (mouse/keyboard combo), but its really not that bad. Just learned about holding shift to hone in from long distance etc. Is there a certain beginner layout of the keys/buttons that I should follow for this game? Im pretty much using the mouse for everything, and using the M for the map. Can see things getting really hectic later on, and I really don't want to get caught having to use a bunch of buttons etc when **** hits the fan.

Of course!

...though I think I possibly still could've been using firearms at around that level. Somewheres around there I got my first epic weapon, and every one since then seems to have been melee for me.

I will also mention that I've been dying a lot recently. Perhaps I just suck, but it seems like in the later levels things can get pretty tough. There seems to be parts of the map and/or particular mobs/bosses that are scaled for a bit above your level, whereas some are static, as determined by map/story. Now that I'm level 40 running into a boss/mob of level 45, with the right set of buffs, can put a dying on me several times over.

I picked up Gemcraft: Chasing Shadows on sale during the Steam Winter sale - for only 2 bucks. This game is great so far - it's a really well put together tower defense game with some nice addons like skill development, spells, etc. Well worth the 2 bucks if you like that kind of game.

The splitting missile spell for the arcanist is fantastic. I'm up to a point where it pierces through enemies and splits when it stops piercing. It's a great mob stopper.
