View Full Version : 2009 College Football: Week 2 Discussion
I'm, of course, very interested in UCLA/Tennessee, but I'll be taping a youth football game before coaching my own team at the same time this one's going on.
I am looking forward to the Notre Dame/Michigan and USC/Ohio State games, despite not being a fan of any of the programs. I'm also hoping that Mizzou shuts out Bowling Green and puts up 90 on Clawson.

I always thought that early football games on Satruday and Sunday would be one of the advantages to living on the West Coast. I like the idea of football starting at 9:30 or 10:00 am and being done by around 8:00 pm or so, especially now that I get up early anyway.
The drawback, of course, would be 4:30 pm or 5:00 pm starts to weekday NHL games. Those would be tough with work and all.

JonInMiddleGA

Quick snap, long pass to a guy wide ass open down the sideline. First down from the 12 for Clemson.
The crowd sounds like they're growing increasingly restless & if Clemson scores here (as they appear nearly sure to do) and we go three & out again, don't be surprised if the boo birds start to emerge. After the early flurry, this looks a lot like the Gardner-Webb performance.

Tough situation for a soph. like Tarrant to have to make that play on Spiller and he delivered.

Pissy situation for me, as I was in the air flying back home FROM Atlanta for most of the game, so didn't get to see it when I was there and didn't get home in time to see it.
It seems to me that the problems we've had running the offense in the last two years (Gardner-Webb excepted, as the problem there was a third-string-QB who couldn't run the option if he was playing NCAA 2009) hasn't been with team speed on defense, but with size and talent on the defensive line. That's something Clemson had in abundance coming in, and it's someplace LSU had a lot of talent as well. It's also something that I wonder if we'll improve on as the offensive line continues to be molded into more of what fits CPJ's system. We're still starting at least one converted TE at tackle, IIRC.
Glad for the win, obviously, but boy... that wasn't a very good performance from what I've been reading. Miami has to think they have a good chance at home.

Still coming down from that one. A few random thoughts...
-Clemson's DL is probably the best one GT will face all year. And as bad as it looked at times Tech still rushed for 303 yards.
-The hold call on Clemson was tough, but I think it was a bit of a lifetime achievement award. There were several on Morgan that could have been called.
-I've blasted Spiller a lot in the past for being soft, but he's a hell of a football player. Ford also.
-I'm really scared to see what Parker becomes. Not bad at all for 2 games in.
-Paul Johnson will have fun with this game tape. There were a ton of missed blocks and reads. A few of those hit and it could have been put away early.
-Say what you want about Nesbitt, but the kid is a warrior. He had a rough night and then put the team on his shoulders in the fourth quarter. I wouldn't trade him for anyone. Well maybe Jesus Tebow.
-Jerrard Tarrant!
-Really happy for Scott Blair, who kicked every ball but two punts for Tech last year. To come through 3-3 on FG and have a TD pass. What a night.
Another great Clemson-GT game. Maybe a preview of the ACC title game?

Their size didn't give us much problem early best I could tell but as they started to penetrate better we & their ends avoided getting taken out completely, oddly, that's when we decided that the offense consisted primarily of two plays: the dive and the fling-it-as-far-as-you-can-Josh-and -we'll-pray-someone-wearing-white-catches-it pass.
I was surprised to come away feeling that we may have some conditioning issues as well, by the late third quarter they looked more tired than sluggish to my eyes.
And I can't begin to describe how utterly lost Nesbitt looked on non-option plays. Not mentally, I think he really does have a better grasp of the offense than a year ago, none of the oh-crap-what-do-I-do moments that popped up occasionally. Instead, he looks physically confused (if that makes any sense), you could almost hear him counting steps on drop backs and then trying to remember how the whole passing thing worked. He's got a freakin' cannon for an arm but that's about it for throwing. Yeah, I know, he had to learn a new offense and how to work under center when he got there but damn, he looked worse tonight than he did a year ago.
The one BIG bright spot of the night, along with Blair's performance, is the goose egg in the fumbles line on the stat sheet. Of all the bets you could make on the game, that's one that should have had the longest odds & it's encouraging to see that it's at least possible.

Serious question, since I won't see the 360 replay until tomorrow... called dives, or read to the dive out of the triple or the midline?

Combo of called dives and reads/midline. Clemson really keyed on Dwyer. They are also the first tem I've seen key on him on the delay option wide to the B-back. And it's the first time I've seen Nesbitt make the right read there to keep it (though he missed it the first time).
GT tackles were overmatched tonight, but they flat out missed some blocks tonight too.

The announcers mentioned that few plays in the GT playbook were for designated runners so maybe they were all being called by Nesbitt but for lack of a better description they "looked" pre-called or else Josh was reading them very quickly because there was little hesitation on them at all.

Clemson is such a tease. I can't imagine the roller coaster actual fans and alumni have been on the past few years. The team has a lot of talent, but I don't know what's missing. My wife was convinced it was over at 24-0, but I convinced her that not for some awful coaching moves, they were actually PLAYING very well by halftime.
The pooch punt was stupid, and not calling a timeout when they rush the field with the FG team and then run the fake was also stupid. That's 14 points right there. But the coaching staff got the team back together, and they played GREAT in the final 30 minutes. GT had to scrape to get those 2 field goals together, and Parker showed his youth on the 2 late drives. Hell, he showed it all game, but the boy can run AND has a cannon. It was a fun game to watch, if disappointing as hell to a Clemson alum and her fanatic husband.

LOL, if they bench Hawkins are they gonna take that guy's shirt again? Seems pretty stupid to do that two years in a row. It's probably best to just suck it up this year, instead of wasting another year of that guy's eligibility. It's not like a better QB would have helped them against Toledo. When a MAC QB is outrunning your secondary, then you've got bigger problems to fix than your own QB spot.

What a fucking screw job that game was. Stanford didn't lower the hammer when they had WFU on the ropes in the second half, but the refs just reamed Stanford twice at the end. First, when Stanford has the ball with about 4 minutes left, Toby Gerhart runs for about 30 yards inside Wake's 25 yard line, and it's called back for a clip that never happened.
Then Riley Skinner never even gets into the end zone, they call it a TD. Stanford challenges, and after less than 10 seconds of review, the ref comes back and says "After review, the ruling on the field is confirmed". Bullshit. Just come out and tell the truth that you couldn't see anything, and just decided to save face.
I hate having the the team go across the country to these sweaty redneck towns, forcing me to wake up at 8:30 on a Saturday, only to watch the team fall apart in the second half, and have that compounded by some absolutely garbage officiating. Just play UC-Davis at home next time. At least if we lose, I can sleep in.

Wake Forest blows, Jon. They already got beat by Baylor at home. Stanford lacks the depth the finish the deal, much like last year. They absolutely dominated WFU on both sides of the ball in the first half, and then Grobe actually made some nice adjustments on both offense and defense, and Coach Harballs didn't show his trademark "Enthusiasm Unknown To Mankind", but rather played it close to the vest, which was obviously a huge mistake. The offense was on the field for about 12 seconds the entire second half, and the defense got tired in the sweat hole that is Winston-Salem. The LB's were abused by the Wake Forest running backs, and Riley Skinner showed himself to be a good leader.
Stanford should take care of business next year on the farm, but after this second half I'll remember to not take anything for granted. Which, after GT's second half showing against Clemson, you should be familiar with.

Prince needed this drive to get back under control, although it would be nice to see more long completions from the pocket (that just might not happen today with the kind of pressure UT's bringing).
The good news is, we have Chow, and he already did some plays on this drive that took advantage of Tennessee over-aggressing on the play. Not Kiffin will come back with some counter move (like that corner blitz that caught Knox from behind).

As a Michigan fan, I'm still holding my tongue due to a certain loss to a Division II team. Saying that, this was Brain Kelly's bunch that he recruited there. He was only there for two years, but had them on the right track even when the team had the smallest amount of seniors in the country, or really close to it. The team was like 75% freshmen and sophomores and he was winning with them. I'm willing to bet any Big Ten coach who puts CMU on their schedule breathed a long sigh of relief when he went to Cincinnati. I have zero doubt he could have built a team there capable of beating anybody in the Big Ten.

After watching that Michigan State game, I came very close to taking all of my state gear and burning it in the driveway. Year after year it is the same shit. Snatching defeat from the jaws of victory.

I can't believe that Matt Millen had the balls to step foot back into the state of Michigan. It will be a severe injustice if he gets out of the state unscathed.
Yeah, hopefully the ND bus will hit him in the parking lot.

I bet that will sit well with the ND fans...

Yes, I'm quoting myself. Just remember, this is the guy who when he drafted all of those WRs for the Lions probably thought he was drafting Jerry Rice as well. He might have insight for some of the stuff going on and football knowledge, but talent evaluation? (bust out laughing) Musburger is another one that can overstate stuff to just painful levels to where it's better for me to watch the game without sound on.
And oh, ND, you might want to look into a defense. 31 points from Michigan isn't a good sign for a team looking for a BCS bowl bid.

Yeah, not sure that is really the way to go though. With Brehaut there now and Nottingham on the way, there's only so many blue chip QB's you can have at one time. Somebody will be the odd man out and I think Brehaut's ceiling is a lot higher than Prince's, no?
Yeah, I think Brehaut's ceiling is higher, but Prince isn't a bad QB. He wasn't rated as high as Brehaut, but he was still one of the better guys available out west in his class. I think the whole Brehaut vs Prince thing is going to be one of those "who the heck knows what's going to happen" sorta things for a while.
Gawd willing, Prince explodes, goes pro after his junior year, and then Brehaut dominates for two seasons after that, giving away to Nottingham or whoever else we will ahve picked up by then.
Obviously, though, that's a best best case scenario, which pretty much never happens.

2 straight punts where Tennessee runs by the returner with a flailing arm tackle.
UCLA already up by 6 and no sign of a UT offense.
The incrompetent one has returned, along with the ole' offensive line play.
Incrompetent. lol...i'll have to remember that one.
He looked like he was trying to change his approach on the sideline. Maybe that will get things going for him.
But UCLA's D isn't exactly the kind of unit you want to have to get better against. They might be the best in the Pac 10 (although there are several schools in the mix for that claim).

Well if they lose this game, getting that BCS bid may be a bit tough with who is on ND's schedule.

Didn't see it. I was changing my laundry out. Oh well...good start to this set of downs. Nice undercut by Verner.

Eh, I was ready to say it was a bad call myself but I think the out of control/reckless disregard aspect of the blind dive is what drew the flag. It's not as bad in college as the don't-hit-the-girl-wearing-the-skirt calls of the NFL but that one probably deserved the flag given the emphasis.

He aimed his hit (leading with the helmet) directly towards the ground, that will be called everytime on a feet first sliding QB. Not a smart play by the defender.

35-20 WVU and the Mountaineers closing in on 500 yards today with about 8 minutes left to play.

Good drive about UT. Not great (a TD woulda been that), but they needed at least one score to get within a TD.
Now the pressure's on UCLA to sustain a drive. If they do, they can put it away. But I don't know they're quite ready to do a grind out drive like Tennessee just did.

Only USC is ranked, so even if it's a bumpy ride with a number of close calls, they can still get enough wins.

UCLA's D needs to stiffen up with their backs against the wall. Two down territory for Tennessee with that offense.

WVU finishes off ECU and it wouldn't have been remotely close with decent officiating and if there hadn't been 2 muffed punts deep in their own territory. The score was 35-20 but yardage was 509-238 and 1st downs 23-13.
Hopefully the poor officiating prepares the team for the game at Auburn next week.

Agreed. I thought for sure they would call a PA pass somewhere during that sequence.
Very close to a safety there.
