Pretty hard to tell, sorry. The apparently dull plumage likely makes it a female. That looks like a bit of buffy-yellow near the rump, but the whitish belly and lack of wingbars rule out some of the more common species that might fit.

I'm assuming this is a small bird, maybe sparrow-sized? Around 5" total length?

Smaller than that, even. Eyeballing it, I'd be surprised if it's much more than 3".

Neighbor thinks it's a baby. It was moving around quite a bit while we were talking, but not trying to flap its wings or walk anywhere. We know there's a bird nest in the bush outside my other neighbor's window, but it's not the same species of bird in that nest.

Ugh, no. Since our cats became outdoor cats earlier this summer they've killed or maimed something like four birds, six mice, a baby rabbit*, a Praying Mantis (ok, that one was mostly unharmed) and about three dozen cicadas, crickets, and grasshoppers. They aren't content to do this outside, they feel the need to drag their victims through the kitty door and inside the house. Usually squealing.



* Actually they only wounded the rabbit - we had to take it to an emergency vet where the only thing they could/would do is to put it down. Boy, how THAT pleased the kids.

Birdie is hopping, but clearly lacks balance and/or motor control. Definitely got to be a youngling. I just wish I knew who to call to ensure the birdie would be taken care of and not euthanized.

Nope. Basically, there's an external entrance to the building, a little...some kind of wall that juts out a bit (or maybe my apartment door is simply inset from the hallway), and that's it. How in the blue hells it got into the building in the first place is beyond me. I don't think it could fly. It never made an attempt to so much as move its wings. It shook itself a couple times, and went hoppy-hoppy briefly before I had to leave for work.

I would have loved to have been able to do just that, but my apartment complex has a fairly strict pets policy, and I don't know if they'd have made an exception for that. I did try to get animal control to come and rescue it once I determined there were no bona-fide animal rescue places around that could help. They were closed for the day.

I got home from work, birdie is now laying over on its side with its legs stretched out and stiff. I'd like to think it's sleepin', but, y'know...

Also, it's considerably flatter now than it was when I left. I have the sinking feeling somebody stepped on it while I was gone. Maybe the neighbor's daughter who kept fooling with it to try and get it to move. Or maybe death just causes flattening.

Ever had any sexual harassment training? The reality is that the target doesn't have to be offended. ANYONE can be offended by it and file a complaint or sue. If it's bad enough, even one instance can win a lawsuit and get people fired.
