My zombie apocalypse team: Walter White, Steven Colbert, Darth Vader. I figure we'll kill and consume Colbert early on, and then White, Vader and I shall probably be able to destroy all of the zombies a few minutes later, and then we'll rule over the remnants of human society for quite some time.

A few notes:
1) Value comes from being second or third in lots of counties. That isn't shown here. Being second in the NY-NJ area is far more valuable than owning where the buffalo roam.
2) Look at all the Dallas territory in the South, Virginia in particular. That's where the Black population lives in majority status. Never forget the vicious racist past of The Foreskins. When Dallas came into the league it was the first team in any sport to market its black stars and they were rewarded with huge support in the Black population. That remains to this day. Any black football fan my age walks around in a Cowboys jersey, not a Foreskins. In fact it hurts them when they see a young black kid wearing a Griffin jersey. Time passes, but many wounds are deep.
3) What is the dark blob in Florida? The Bears? I can't make that one out.

Right - I am aware of that racial element re: Redskins/Cowboys. And I can get being second or third in an area. But what the Redskins always seem to claim is that they still have a strong presence in the Carolinas and the South in general - roots stemming back from even before the Falcons. But if you look at that map and more so the rankings later in that link (http://img.gawkerassets.com/img/18d0u3qrqczibpng/ku-xlarge.png), that just doesn't seem to be the case (granted, that list may be less than scientific). Even for CAR home territory, WAS is behind DAL, PIT, and NE. And other than BAL, that's where they have the best representation. So I'm not seeing the breadth of fan base.
Yet they are always right behind DAL in the rankings. Ahead of NE (popular and in a major city), NYG (huge market), and PIT (huge national presence, but in a small city). Like you say, there could be an argument that the Jets would be more valuable, even as the second fiddle in NY. Or CHI.
I know the Redskins own their stadium, but really - that place is a bit of a dump, in an area with crap-all around it. I guess it's just because WAS "owns" a number of very rich counties?

Edit: re: NFL Fandom map.
I also wonder how different something like this would have looked if snapshots were taken in different decades. Obviously Facebook wasn't around, but I'd imagine that you'd see Green Bay all over the place in the '60s, Pittsburgh even more prevalent in the '70s, etc. I wonder how far the 49ers' influence would have spread even in the '80s? Would be an interesting indication of 'East Coast Bias', I'm sure.

One of the things I've been told and observed is the large number of Federal employees and military who cycle their careers through the DC area and become Washington football fans while they are working/based in the area. Thus Washington becomes their hometown team because they lack a true hometown.

11-13-2013, 09:27 PM
I'm not so sure I buy that. I think a lot of the rank and file are originally from here (and many are black - see your Cowboys point above), and those that aren't don't necessarily shake their prior allegiances. Immigrants that settle in the area and begin following the sport? Maybe. Representatives and staff who stay for a bit then go back home? Doubtful. Or at the least overstated. Especially given the past 20 years, where they've pretty much sucked.

Value has very little to do with value and more to do with revenue and assets. The Redskins value has everything to do with the fact they own their own stadium and surrounding land in a high-value area and have an incredible season ticket and suite holder base.
The Chiefs probably have a wider fan base than the Redskins, but they don't own their stadium, they don't have a deep season ticket base and they don't have a long list of lobbyists and the like that pay big money for suites. Hence the lower value.
I'm not even sure the width and breadth of the Cowboys fan base even helps their value that much -- aren't merchandise revenues split evenly with the the league? I think teams only get to keep the lion's share of merchandise revenue for items they sell themselves.

I worked for a big law firm in DC in 2002, while the Redskins were in the middle of a very mediocre stretch. And I was amazed at how hot the tickets were. There's a lot of money in that town, and there's a lot of lobbying/client recruitment, and Redskins tickets and/or boxes were definitely a status thing in that world. The quality of the team was secondary; getting to reward good clients with some sweet tickets was the thing. It may be the same way in other big cities, but it certainly surprised me coming from a small market.

I know they own FedEx, but as stadiums go I can't imagine it is THAT valuable. It's pretty widely disparaged around here (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/FedEx_Field#Criticisms_and_potential_replacement) as being a crappy experience to a) get to and b) actually watch a game in. But then I guess I'd be hard-pressed to list the other teams which actually own their stadiums.
Recently the "incredible ticket base" has come under some fire too; fans who have given up their tickets, others repeatedly being mail-bombed that they are next in line (some who already gave up their tickets, others who weren't even on the list at all). They also removed a large chunk of seats for a "party deck" which was seen more of a way to save face because demand was going down and they might be in jeopardy of not selling those seats (http://www.washingtonpost.com/sports/redskins/redskins-say-they-were-unable-to-sell-season-tickets-for-seats-removed-from-fedex-field/2011/07/14/gIQA1vbwEI_story.html). I mean, they're still selling out, but I don't think the base is what it once was or what it has been advertised to be (http://www.washingtoncitypaper.com/articles/1961/scarce-tactics). RG3 may change that, but I think it's eroded with years of questionable management (Snyder, Vinnie).

I agree the 75-year wait for season tickets or whatever it was is largely mythology. But albion perfectly sums up the makeup of the base that makes it valuable. Lobbyist, power brokers, corporations and others based in DC drive up the ticket value for premium seats substantially. Among my political friends in DC, tickets to the Redskins are considered among the highest gifts you can give or receive. The biggest chunk of money teams make on tickets aren't from individuals but from companies that buy blocks of tickets and suites. The Redskins score as strong as anybody on that front. They could probably play at a high school stadium and get companies and lobbyist to pony up $20,000 for a seat in the rickety press box.
To my knowledge the only teams that own their own stadiums are the Redskins and the Patriots. Green Bay is technically not owned by the team, but that's a unique situation.

Best explanation I saw: it is a viral tie-in to the new "Entourage" movie. I could totally see one of the guys supposedly being a producer for a Wonder Twins movie (remember, the main actor guy was Aquaman).

You could sum it up about the same in four steps:
1. 2-0! Super Bowl Bound Baby!
2. It's all good, we won't lose more than 2 in a row and we'll bounce back.
3. OMG Matt Schaub sucks!

Wish I could've got closer but that is a group of bald eagles that came to feed in one of my fields we had just spread manure in. They are going after placenta from cows calving that ends up in our manure.
We have a major winter nesting ground about 8 miles from me on the Wisconsin River so they frequently head my way to feed, especially when the river freezes over.

Unconfirmed at this point afaik but there's several suggestions out there that the dunker is senior forward TaShawn Thomas (and there's definitely a facial resemblance there) while the victim is supposedly L.J. Rose, former Baylor point guard who transferred to Houston.
There's also more references to the victim being someone that was known for coming into class late, making the set up easier to pull off.

Sometime earlier in this thread I posted pics from Aiguille du Midi, which is near the top of Mont Blanc and reached by a ride on a gondola. They've added a new attraction, which is a clear platform hanging over the side, which gives you a view of over 3000 feet straight down into the town of Chamonix.

Eh, I wouldn't say they all look like twins. While the overall appearances of the subjects are similar*, there are differences if you really look (or in some cases, there is one particular feature that is spot-on, while others not so much).
* this may vary on how good you are at facial recognition/distinguishing features; my son (and my wife to some extent) seems to be not so good - he's always mentioning how X on TV looks like Y, when there is really not that much of a similarity at all. For years too he's had people walk by and say hi to him and we'll ask "who was that?" and he'll give a *shrug*. Granted he does need a better prescription on his glasses, but that's not all of it. Oh - the "we treat you like you'd treat you" commercials are another good example. He swears those two black women are the same person.

Top pic is coming back off the dock where we saw each other the first time that day, then a pic from our beach BBQ rehearsal dinner the night before, and last is from the "trash the dress" session we did during our honeymoon in Tulum a few days later.

This puzzled me as well. Best I can figure they must have dropped the puck before he ever got in goal (those intermission deals are sometimes pretty rushed affairs). The goalie apparently couldn't stay on his feet and a photographer had actually tried to help him prior to what the ref does in the gif. A few stills from it are in this link

You can get some sauces that have a really, really light habenero, where you get the flavor and enough heat that if you stop eating it for a few minutes the burn goes away and you don't keep paying for it. Otherwise, I totally agree with you.
