Pro Yakyuu Spirits 2011 News Post

I’ve been aware of Pro Yakyuu Spirits for a while, mostly through random YouTube videos and forum chatter. It wasn’t until this year that, given a chance to play this Japanese import, I realized how differently this game plays in comparison to American hardball titles.

However, to make it clear from the start, I can’t quite review this game because the vast majority of the game’s text is incomprehensible to me. However, I can share with you why I think PYS’ gameplay is unique, thanks largely to www.spiritstranslation.com. If you decide to purchase this game (and aren’t fluent in Japanese), this site will be a huge help.

Anyway, PYS tweaks the standard American baseball formula in some meaningful (and mostly good) ways. In some cases, these modifications actually make reference to things we have seen in past American games but were later lost in modern incarnations.

Hehehe, what prompted me to post this was the game I just had Marines vs. Buffaloes..lol. I lost 5-3. My three runs were 3 solo hrs, I ended up with only 4 hits though. Bay stars also had 3 Hrs, and all their runs were accounted for by HRs. Seems like most of my games are going like this now. Its feast or famine, not alot of hits, but the hits I do get are HRs. Sure I use the power swing alot, probably too much, but if I make good contact with the power swing I;m ok with balls going off the wall and not going out sometimes, instead of monsterous HRs.

I don't get many hits though, so I'm a little reluctant to make the batting tougher for me. Out of the hits I do get, HRs seem unproportional. Maybe I'm using power swing too much then possibly.

Well yes and no....when you use the POWER swing all the time, you will get less hits and more HR off the hits you do have......if you only use power swing with the big boys and regular contact for everyone else you will end up getting more hits and more runs off 2 and 3 run shots off your heavy hitters......and the game might stale on you...because you will end up winning by a bunch of runs...

If you up your settings and hit for contact with non power hitters and power swing with your big boys.....you will end up enjoying the game more because the pitchers AI adjust more and dont throw alot of meatballs.....this will give you a more realistic experience where you need to strategize more as you will not get alot of HR because they will be harder to hit

Well.....I just played Carp vs. Fighters....final score 6-5,,,,no homeruns for me or the cpu....lol. Shame on me for doubting the pro spirits awesomeness! Seems like when I got on the verge of maybe getting just a little bit frustrated with the game for something...it wins me back!!!

Opposite field swing produces a lot of hits. Post patch I have seen some doubles down the opposite line and warning track, tailing away fly balls fall in.

I suck at opposite field hits. It's the bottom bar in their attributes on screen when they are batting right? And then it's the O button to use it?

No, the 3 bars represent:

Power
Contact
Speed

O button is correct...and just like real life is optimal when swinging a bit late on outside pitches. If you're down 2 strikes you shouldn't be using pull swing often (because the CPU is not going to give you a pitch to pull.)

To further expand Vernons point. The sweet spot selection (power or contact) and swing type (x = pull, o = opposite) are INDEPENDENT. I didn't make this correlation at first till I read the special attributes section.

For example one of Eishin Soyogi's special abilities is power to the opposite field. So I use a power sweet spot with an O swing.

I love using O swing when i get behind in the count 0-2 1-2, it allows you to foul pitches off until you can work the count back in your favour.

Yes but to be a consistent hitter you need to recognize when to pull (X) and when to slap (O)......O will help you protect the plate, but on a pitch inside it will cause you to strike out or hit a weak grounder to 1B/2B or 3B/SS (depending on the plate side of the batter and hit abilities)....anything middle and out you can hit with authority to the opposite side for extra base hits....(AHHhHHH,......the beauty of physics in this game)...and if your batter has the ability to hit with power to the opposite field.....beware of the DROOL effect this has on gamers....lol

I can't say enough.....know your team.....each players strengths and weaknesses....learn what approach to use with each batter when at the plate and you will enjoy the game even more.....you will who to use in what situation and that alone makes the experience that much better.

Is there any chance that this game comes to the states? The Show is really good but it lacks fun factor IMO.

We hope. Its simply the best baseball game out there. It's nice learning the NPB league and players. I actually want to goto Mazda Stadium and see Maeda pitch a game.

The 2nd patch is out. Any impressions? It seems homers have been toned down a little in my eyes.
