Madden NFL 11 News Post

IGN has posted some hands-on impressions of the recently announced online co-op mode in Madden NFL 11.

"I spent a good bit of time with Online Team Play in Madden NFL 11, and while I didn't earn any of the boosts in my single game (I blame my co-op partner), I still had a blast playing the redesigned mode. It's miles better than last year's effort, and it finally seems like EA Sports has given players a reason to play together online as opposed to against one another. I will admit that playing as the quarterback is still the most fun of the offensives positions, but they've done a decent job of giving other players things to do (outside of playcalling, which will still be a little boring for those not playing as QB)."

So this is the gameplay they couldn't improve Franchise for? Do they have any pride in their work?

*ahem* Route - Based - Passing - Needed!

What's up with the boost features? So you play a lot at QB your QB is artificially upgraded beyond what he is in real life?

That's part of the arcade stuff they need to keep out of the game. Same with the franchise bonuses you can buy.

I did. They said they brought in new audio people, they were bringing in new commentary, etc. I was ready for Madden to Join NBA2K and MLB the Show in the "next Gen" presentation category. I know I need to really see more than I have, but what I have seen has been garbage. They have been so tight lipped this year, theres no way they would release a clip with gus johnson in it if it didn't resemble the final product so Im going to assume what we heard is what we are going to get.

If it is as bad as it sounds, Madden 11 will be the official "death" of the Madden Franchise, at least in my life. And again, I will assume in others too. This will be the 3rd commentary on next gen and if its jacked up, there are no excuses other than "They dont know what the heck they are doing" and truthfully, Im about sick of all this crap "it takes 2 years to do franchise" and this and that, its like enough already you liars. They blatantly lied last year about the stadium sounds, etc but noone really got on them that hard, now just the chain of events this week and I just think its over. I think we are in a new "generation" and they are just going to do them, and Madden has become a game most of us have no interest playing.

Yeah was that a CPU controlled DE running the arc? Looked a little better than last year.

Just maybe because the LT got beat already. That could be the reason why.

Gameplay (or camera?) looked slightly better. Commentary was absolutely horrible....it's either an early build or I'm convinced EA Madden just doesn't get it.

Without franchise updates I would say that I'm going to continue to play Madden '10, although I haven't even played that in the last 8 months. Thanks for saving me $70!

horrible just horrible... what is that coop crap changes? the camera follow the players you are controlling.... also those bonuses are crap i hope they are optional.

Sounds like the same commentary as last year, just with a new voice. This is just what I was concerned with. Back in May, I sent a tweet to Ronnie Morales, Audio Designer on Madden NFL 11.

@EA_Romo is the VO technology/sequencing with Gus in Madden 11 any different than in previous years - or is it just a great new voice?

Surprisingly, he wrote back. Cool guy.

@SeventhWard we have a new system that helps drive speech and presentation at once for a more robust package than ever before.

Okay so - keeping in mind that this TINY piece of video that we saw is NOT from the final retail build - is this it? That can't be right, can it? The guy wouldn't lie to me. No way. Right?

Getting Gus Johnson is great. It was a good decision and Congratulations for getting that to happen. But his great emotional energetic voice alone doesn't SOLVE THE PROBLEM with Madden Commentary. I want to give Mr. Morales the benefit of the doubt here. I really hope that it doesn't sound like that in the final game....but like a character in a George Lucas movie, I've got a bad feeling about this.

This is the same sequencing (my term, don't know the correct one) we've always had, and it's OLD. Boring. Robotic. Tired. Sure, Gus is much more animated that Tom Hammond - but it's a band-aid approach.

Sometimes we can do our MOST creative work on the LEAST important problems. The more important problems often demand quick solutions, so we fall back on familiar methods. - Paraphrased From Some Guy's Blog

The little things. The details. In every Madden, it's what they miss. For Madden '11, they've got "new lighting" but once again its not Progressive Lighting. Why not? It's technically possible and in a 2010 game it's expected. Hell, even NCAA 10 had it. Why take the time to implement a new feature and not complete it? Like Online Franchise.

"New features" are rushed into the game before they're truly complete and, to use the word the suits use, the CONSUMER is the one that suffers.

I'm frustrated. I'm frustrated that Madden is a game that has to be made within a rigid, flawed big-studio structure. I'm frustrated that the talented guys who make Madden aren't being challenged, hence the lack of true innovation. I'm frustrated that the combination of these things gives the impression that the fans seem to have more passion than the guys making the game.

Ok you guys have to be kidding me. This **** isn't done. Come on man, the audio was silent til AFTER the play...I mean literally after AD was tackled.

BTW don't you guys think that the game looks awfully similar to Madden 10?
I haven't played many sports games but I recently bought Nfl 2k5.. And before this gets in a argument about the games...I just think that if they make the commentary presentation like 2k5, MANY people would feel different about the overall game.. Right now it's just sooo bland that they nitpick on the other parts.. The overall game looks good though..

We need a bit of "Favre hands off to Peterson, he's gonna bounce it outside.." etc
Yep, I wrote this to them myself. At least since going to broadcast-style this generation, they never announce who's dropping back, they never announce who the ball is being handed off to, they never announce who's in to receive, they never announce who's in to kick or punt. Those are big empty spaces, and since all of these actions happen for the entire course of an NFL game, well, they've got a big problem there. I know they said they hired professional writers, but... that silence is awful, and I honestly don't see how that can go without being noticed unless you just don't watch NFL games on TV...?

There were some videos djordan posted of Madden 03(?) where the QB was announced dropping back, and handoffs were announced, etc. that bad silence didn't exist last generation.

Yes I do.

However imo, not sure if we could really expect a dramatic difference in just one year. But if you may mean, wheres the evidence of momentum and locomotion? Although this is a very small sample size....I didn't see any either. Not saying it's not there...but personally, I just didn't see it. Looks just like M10 to me so far. But it certainly is a beautiful looking game.

I know the commentary has been a sore spot with you. Is it truly possible they spent all this time since last year writing up brand new commentary and they didn't change a thing in how it's delivered? I just can't fathom that they decided to start from scratch with Gus and even listed "completely revamped audio presentation from the booth to the field" as a major feature, but yet they STILL have bland uninspired commentary. I won't completely judge from that video for a multitude of reasons, but do you see it being drastically improved this year?

# 55 Xeper84 @ 06/12/10 06:20 PM
I couldn't see a real difference between madden 10 &11 in all the videos i've seen only a little improvement in player movement. But i have also not seen a single gang tackle thats something thats makes me nervous.

I was pretty impressed with that vid. But still no foot plant for the RB which is a downer. What irks me more is all this attention to online play. If chise is the same ole thing there are going to be a lot of pissed gamers..

What had happened here???
I though commentary was more like this...
http://www.osatwork.com/forums/showt...hlight=Johnson

Did they cut out most of the commentary? It was so quiet...maybe they were focusing on showing off the co-op stuff.

This is craziness. For the first time in my life the Madden hype train has actually LOWERED my interest in the game. Every other year (on 360) I have fallen for the hype only to be disappointed. These last 2-3 days in particular have absolutely killed any excitement i had for Madden 11. No improvements to online or offline Franchise mode? Then what's going to keep my mind off the horrible robot gameplay? I was pretty pumped for Gus but after this video I see they somehow managed to screw that up too. If the pre-planned and perfected hype-campaign looks terrible I hate to think what the real game is going to be like. I hate to say this and I don't wish unhappiness on anyone but the Madden team should be ashamed of themselves. Lucky for me NCAA looks phenomenal this year.

It would be a LOT of fun if this OTP was implemented in a similar way to the OTP in NHL. For example, you create a player for each "squad" as it was called in the video, and at the beginning of each OTP match you would select the position you wanted to play. On the subject of the rest of the computer controlled team, I think random computer players in the uniforms that you choose would be pretty cool, but the lack of options (only 32 teams) might challenge diversity a bit. Special EA helmets gloves, shoes, etc could be added as well. Take a hint from the NHL team and use the technology that is available EA!

Bro, I'm going to have to let you down here and give some bad news. EA announced today that there would be no major additions to chise this year because of the gameplay improvements. Madden 12 is supposedly going to devote most of their resources to it. Sorry man.
