Madden 2010 News Post

Early surprise this Memorial Day! Check out the new Madden NFL 10 blog. This one covers blocking improvements in the running game.

Quote:
"2 weeks back we took a look at some of the improvements we made to our pass blocking in order to make the game more realistic (and fun) overall. I encourage everyone to take a look at it here. This week I wanted to give everyone a deeper look at some of the improvements to run blocking as well. Run blocking is one of the trickiest areas to program and tune just because of the amount of variation that happens in the NFL. Pass blocking is definitely complicated as well, but at some level you’ve got some pretty common concepts that you can follow (i.e. the OL needs to stay between the defender and the QB, the defensive end needs to get up field if he’s not stunting, etc). With run blocking however, there are just so many variations of plays that it can take much more time to get every single concept down pat while still making it a) realistic, b) responsive, and c) fun. At the beginning of the year, when we sat down as a group and looked at some of the areas we wanted to address, we all unanimously agreed that there were a few major areas that we just hadn’t quite emulated as well as we would like to create an authentic NFL sim."

I got to say that new hit stick animation looks sooo great. The way the Cowboy player puts his shoulder into him and if u loop it over and over it just flat out looks really darn realistic.

i am not so happy with some of the tackling though. In one of the videos u can clearly see the suction tackling where the defended stops time so he can get the hit on the HB. This is the kind of thing that HAS to be fixed. It is sore on the eyes and it really hurts the gameplay because you never TRULY know if what u think in your mind should happen or if some MADDEn suction stuff is going to take over and screw you.

I agree. Although I won't complain anytime I can see some gameplay vids. Hope the running animations are still being tuned (or sig running animations ). Redskins need black/yellow cleats...Portis needs (and many other RB's) some beefing up in the legs and calves...

Just to throw this out there.

People react to sound faster than to light.

Offensive lineman in a perfect world should always react before the Defensive line.

Maybe this could be fixed with "hike ball recognition" or maybe just tied in with awareness.

my two cents.

And I am truly happy with that 4th vid and the peel off to help stop the linebacker. I kind of feel that in the first video there was a bit of suction on that block on the second level, but maybe I am wrong.

Great job on the blog. Blocking looks alot better, just need to get the running smoother and we'll be in business or maybe its just because its replay and not real time? e3 is almost here.

Loved the hit stick that hit looks alot better than most of the hits from 09. Still waiting to hear aout how the hit stick is more realistic.

the blocking being revamped this year for running and passing makes all the difference in the world. Football starts in the trenches. Great work Ian!

Great blog. The hit stick animation was also right on the money.

I'm very pleased with the time thats been spent to improve the play at the line of scrimmage this year.

The LOS is where a sim-like game begins. If the line play is a mess...well, it all roles down hill from there. It's good to feel that this team understands the importance of the LOS, to achieve a realistic playing football simulation.

Yea ..
I doubt that gets fixed though

It's like Portis just decided that it would be better to stop running and get leveled then to gain more yards...

Totally loved the new Hit-stick animation. That's a realistic big hit like we see in the NFL.

What would be awesome : Reid's monster hit animation on kickoffs.

Hopefully the running animations can still get some tweaking. I did really look like Portis was just jogging upright through that massive hole. I also don't like how defensive players can just turn without slowing down or showing any sign of weight at all. Also the player/player interactions need some work. I saw a LB that was just Mario running at the line.

Moreover, it would be nice if they chip blocked Ware instead of the other dude since Ware probably has the higher rating and is more disruptive. The OL should really pay extra attention to the defensive's best players.

This is looking really good!

I am a big fan of:
--movement and steering in the run blocking engine; now road-graders will really pave the holes open
--the ability for stud defenders to defeat blockers before getting sucked in to an animation that takes them out of the play; the Ratliff clip was really pretty
--the ability to branch out in realistic-looking ways even after being blocked (the second Ware clip)
--the wide technique Ware took in clip #2. We haven't seen that before in Madden, have we?

Everything looks great, but still no refs in gameplay footage. They must be having real problems getting everything to run smoothly.

It's practice mode, so no refs there.
