Madden 2010 News Post

Check out the latest Madden NFL 10 blog. This one covers player momentum.

Quote:
"Hey Madden fans, it's that time again...time for another weekly blog update! Last week, I shared some of the details around the successes and challenges we've had in trying to create simulation gameplay for Madden NFL 10. To be clear, 'simulation' gameplay isn't new - IMO it's what put EA SPORTS (and Madden) on the map in the early 90's after all.

Well this week we wanted to touch on one of the biggest aspects in creating an NFL sim, and as you might expect, this is also usually most difficult to get to an area where it still 'feels right'. That aspect is Player Momentum. Creating momentum in a football game is typically handled in many different ways, so today I'm going to just touch on one key area (and leave other topics for future weeks)."

I will also side with anyone I choose to as Long as I feel they deserve support. I don't care if it's Ian , you, or anyone else in this forum.

I guess you feel since Im defending Ian Im only doing so cause Ian is EA lead man.
Wrong I have received infractions for coming down hard on Ian, but like I said what is right is right.
Ya it's march, so what? He's here to interact with the community and if they can give some input on something that can be refined/adjusted before it becomes the final product, then that's a huge plus. It'd be better to whine about it now when there's perhaps a chance to have it adjusted as opposed to having to put it in a wishlist when the game comes out!

Just remember the arrogance of David Ortiz, who basically said to the community take it or leave it. And one more thing about these guys, and I think it's the most important thing...Peter Moore. He being formally of Sega Sports. Good thing man, good thing.
People who're pointing out things that could be refined are not hating on Ian, not giving them a chance or saying that Madden is going to be a crappy game this year (at least not myself or guillotine). We're INTERACTING with the team to see if maybe small adjustments can be made to improve the game, we're not here blindly saying the game is crap or coming in without ideas supported by arguments. Guillotine already pre-ordered his copy and I'm leaning heavily on purchasing the game this year after seeing the communities response (even though I promised myself never again).

I"m sure I will get crucified for this, but it's good to see that Madden is FINALLY adding in things that were available in the NFL2K series back on the last-gen consoles. It seems that the new Madden exec prod. realizes that Madden sales have been dipping tremendously in the last 3 years, and that "gimmicks, bells & whistles", along with an NFL exclusive deal won't sell the game anymore but GAMEPLAY WILL! *thumbs up* I'm still very cynical as to how this game will turn out, but it appears the game is heading in the right direction.

This has been addressed in the WR/DB Interaction blog. Certainly, you didn't miss it, correct?

I would like to see better D LINE get some realisitic pressure and swim moves / O-LINE play , pass protecting and run blocking instead of the garbage we have been seeing over the years. I would like to see better catch animations again relevant to the situation ie wide open, double team, 1 on 1, up high, jumping, low... I would like to see better throwing animations from qb's, ...
The battle in the trenches has not yet been talked about, but most folks around here are pretty confident that it will be addressed this year. Though pass protecting hasn't been talked about in great detail, Ian did mention that slowing down the QB drop animation would go a ways into helping produce a pocket for the QB.

Obviously, there hasn't been too much talked about yet. But two of your concerns have been touched on in these "meaningless blogs". That's part of the reason why I don't think you should write them off as such.

I don't think we should take it easy on Ian, but some of the vibes I get from some posts just seem unappreciative. It wasn't too long ago most of us were truly HOPING to speak to developers of Madden. Also I think some of us just need to really practice patienence and realize this is definitely the earliest we've ever gotten real information on Madden. I hope this game really marks the turn around for the Madden series on next gen.

Hey guy, I wasn't directing the post to you or Guillotine, and if you did, then my fault. The person I was responding to was saying he didn't want people to defend Ian. And all I was saying is that Ian and the crew really doesn't have to do what they're doing as far as taking our feedback. I think it's obvious that they really are trying to listen to our concerns. I do understand where people may be guarded, considering what promises have been made in the past and not fufilled (say hello David Ortiz), but let's just wait and see.

The one issue I see with this is that WRs often run full speed and then cut at 90 degrees towards the sideline. Fox Sports 'sports science' did a show on this where they measured how Chad Johnson could stop his full momentum in 1 or 2 steps.

This gets to the issue of how the running game does not feature enough cutting -- and I'm not talking about jukes, just cuts. That problem was avoided by 2k because they had the tapping speed burst method, which allowed a more varied feel to the running game. I'm worried that using these larger turning radii alongside the speed burst trigger, Madden will amplify the sensation of controlling a car with a pedal instead of a football player.

Deceleration is just as important as accleration, and with the trigger there's not a good way to replicate the quick deceleration that occurs when cutting because the trigger is too clunky and pedal like. It's like with Madden we need a brake pedal too.

WHO GIVES THE **** THEIR ABOUT 20 MORE PROBLEMS IN MADDEN THEN MAKING CUTS. LETS FOCUS ON THE OLINE BLOCKING AND THE TERRIBLE FRANCHISE MODE.AND ESPN BROADCASTING. MADDEN HAS TO DO MORE BUT THEIR MAKING SOME PROGRESS SO FAR.

Well I hope you guys are right in saying it is still too early. I do hope we get bigger announcement as the game gets close to release. I want to hear how the gameplay itself is being fixed and what they will do about team AI playing like their real life counterpart.....

Again sorry for being pessimistic and I hope I am proven wrong.

I think you have every right to feel that way. Madden has been straight garbage since next gen hit, but I think what we've seen so far is a cause to be a little excited. Especially considering how open the lead designer has been with their plans, and what we have to say.

Franchise is being worked on by the NFL Head Coach team.

ESPN broadcasting is virtually impossible with EA having both the ESPN license and NFL Network license. They can't chose one over the other, making the other mad. So they use a generic one.

# 154 NYG34 @ 03/17/09 03:58 PM
never knew NFL network was a Sponser but they should pick 1. i would chose ESPN. madden could be a very good game next year. THEY HAVE TO MAKE A DECSION WHICH WAY THEY WANT TO GO.

no nfl player has 'turbo' when they are running
they have 'break away speed' and maybe that should be a new attribute

but PLEASE do away with the turbo button. its totally unrealistic
They don't have a turbo button...it's the SPRINT button. And imo, works just as well as your idea would. lol. How would you control where the runner went with the left stick while controlling how fast he was going?

They can't. Upsetting one of their big sponsors enough could have them pull the plug on their sponsorship, losing money. If NFL Network pulled their sponsorship, I doubt Chris Collinsworth would be back as an announcer.

Please take off the caps lock button. Do you see anyone else using caps lock in this forum?

Thank you.

Also, welcome to OS.

You will need to practice a bit of patience. The developers told us a few months ago that they were giving out small announcements that would lead to bigger announcements from draft day till summer.

Oh, and ESPN won't make it in. No one knows for certain, but it sounds like ESPN and the NFL network would conflict with each other.

I totally appreciate that you, as have all of us, been burned in the past by unnaceptable versions of Madden on next gen.

But you've got to stop this negativity.

To address your concerns in this post.

Announcements.

We will get bigger announcements as the game progresses toward release, there is no doubt about it. Ian has not even touched on Oline/Dline or franchise yet. Even the graphics have yet to be shown.

Gameplay.

How you can say that the gameplay has not been touched on yet is beyond me. What have the previous blogs shown already? Gamespeed, ratings, procedural awareness, specific QB ratings, momentum, acceleration, decelaration, WR/DB interaction, fixing the FB dive, QB sneak. These are all gameplay fixes/enhancements/alterations.

AI.

Ian has already said that it is one of his personal missions to fix AI anomalies with regard to playcalling/decisions and Donny has stated that it is his goal to get teams playing like their real life counterparts through ratings alone.

Come on bro' keep the faith!!
