MLB 2K8 News Post

Matt Blumenthal had an opportunity to demo Major League Baseball 2K8 this afternoon. His official writeup of the event will be up later this week, but we wanted to get some quick thoughts up here for you guys.
  • This game looks beautiful, the player models have improved but the real leap is in the animations. The animations move silky smooth and there is no need to worry about herky jerky animations of the past anymore.
  • I'm impressed with how intuitive and fresh the analog controls are. The pitching takes a little time to get the hang of but the new mechanics add a whole new dimension to the pitching model.
  • The baseball cards feature is surprisingly cool, expect me to have more on that later on this week.
  • In-game saves are officially in the game this year.
  • Check swings don't seem to be a chore anymore. They are now accomplished by pulling back on the right analog stick - no more right trigger necessary.
  • Stadium-specific animations are in. The Yankee Roll Call was mentioned specifically.
  • There should be plenty of foul balls this year. I saw several in the few at-bats I played.
  • No spring training games this year.
  • I counted eight unlockable classic stadiums. I think more might be available by default as well.
  • No co-op play
  • You will have the option to make trades for CPU-controlled teams in franchise mode, but you won't be able to edit their rotations and lineups.
  • It was suggested to me that the demo is done and has been submitted. If that's the case, it's in Microsoft's hands now.
  • I will hit on a few of the big questions from the forum here.

Hope its not your PS3. It may be your disc. Blu-Ray packs a lot on the same space as a DVD.

i just got home and tried to play a game. the framerate issue is bad. i have a samsung plasma hdtv running at 720p. i have it connected to the vga port rather than hdmi.

i cannot believe the framerate problem. it clearly happens in the infield on any play. it even starts in the cut scenes of the hard ball central intro. i turned off some features like the ticker and noticed a very slight improvement.

if i was MLB properties i would be pissed. yeah they can fix it, but only for those on xbox live. otherwise, you are screwed. i will try a different camera angle, but it is really stupid. there seems to be a white flash around the human batters right before the stutter.

i may have wasted $60.00.

I was going to buy this for the PS3 but I noticed on the back of the box that it only says 720p which I assume means it doesn't run at 1080i/1080p. The back of the box for the Xbox 360 says it runs at 1080p. This is a pretty big difference between the two for me.

Played some more. Weird thing is when you play with minor league teams the framerate is totally fine. Im really liking this game. Im kinda scared to say this, but I popped in the show and quit after 1 inning, and went back to 2k8. I think the sig styles are better in 2k as well. Anyone who knows me on here knows i am not a fanboy. I hated 2K7, played the show religiously last year. I am just glad we have 2 good baseball games this year IMO.

Looks like you got the worst case of this framerate disease. It seems to vary between users/tv's.

Maybe it's the commentary that's causing the framerate issues since the minor league games run flawless

Anyway, even with all of the negative responses, 2K8 sounds like a pretty solid game to me. Sure it's going to have its flaws, but most of the complaining so far (ie: framerate, presentation) are issues that don't concern me very much. Not that I don't want those issues to be fixed as this is a next-gen game, but I've always been a guy that was primarily concerned with gameplay. And most of the *impressions* that I have been reading have praised the gameplay, more specifically the pitching and the fielding. I am extremely excited to try these new features, as they are innovative and will make the game more challenging, even when you get used to the controls.

Everyone knows The Show is a great game. I am fortunate enough that my roommate has a PS3 upstairs and I have a 360 downstairs, so I will have the ability to play both games this year and am not limited to just one of these games. But for those that don't have a PS3, it sounds as if 2K8 is going to be a really solid option for you this year if you're looking for good gameplay.

Again, I haven't played the game yet, but that's just my opinion from reading the impressions!
Hmmm. Girlfriend vs. playing new baseball game? What would you guys choose? For me, let's just say that I am sure glad tonight is not Valentines Day But, I have been married for 13 years and have a child.

Gameplay-wise, what do you like/dislike about 2K8 as compared to The Show?

Gameplay wise I would have to say I like the fielding more in 2K8. Love the aerial cam. The hitting is a toss up for me. Pitching I like 2K8.

Can anyone shed some light on the sac-fly issue. Has there been a situation where you would like to hit one, but you didn't
