Who Holds The Blame For UFC 151 Cancellation?
Posted on August 23, 2012 at 05:44 PM.
Jon Jones is taking a beating for declining to fight Chael Sonnen at UFC 151, forcing the UFC to cancel the event. What champion has ever been asked to defend his title vs a new challenger on 8 days notice? Had there been more depth on the card with more viable co-main event and main card fights could they have saved the card? dies the UFC not hold blame here also?

Im not sure how any of this can be placed on the fighters. Hendo got hurt with 8 days before fight. Like you said, the card was weak, once again not the fighters fault. Dana White is just all pissy cause he didnt want money taken out of his wallet.

Well, there's more to it than that. This is a huge PR hit for the UFC. Think of all of the people who bought hotel rooms and plane tickets. A lot of that will likely not get refunded. Also, most of those fighters were dependent on their show purse. Only top level fighters get large paydays. The rest of those fighters need that money to pay bills.

With that said, I still think Dana and the UFC are culpable as they did not have the foresight to prepare for a worst-case scenario when scheduling the card.

i see your point. so dont cancel it. obviously the fans arent going to get the show they had hoped for with bones fighting but if it was easy enough to get sonnen to fight im sure he could have found a opponent for him. dont ya think?

maybe offer the fans something extra in the way of future tickets or a slight refund. im sure there is other ways to deal with this other than canceling.

Ya I'm not sure what the thought process was. You could cancel the fight but keep the card which wouldve been less name worthy thank most UFC on FX cards. But at least they get something . However, the production costs could have outweighed what they PPV would have translated to. It probably would have received an all-time low buy rate as well. Plus, Chael would likely only agree to fight for a title on short notice. I doubt he would have agreed to just some mid-level guy.

It frustrates me to no end hearing all of the criticism of Jones. What champion has ever been asked to do that? It was unprecedented and unfair to ask Jones to carry the load and make him the fall guy. At the end of the day, you need a contingency plan. You need a card capable of at least holding its own if the main events dies at the last minute. The UFC didn't do that and they are suffering because of it. Sadly, they are hanging one of their biggest stars out to dry along the way.

Plenty of fighters have fought fill ins. How long have you been watching UFC anyway?Jones doesnt want to fight anyone that remotely has a chance to beat him. the only puss in this whole situation is him.
