Dune (Part 1, 2021)

Unfortunately, theaters here aren’t open so watched it on HBOMax. Fantastic, probably my favorite movie of the year so far.

If you can, watch it in theaters. It sucks for me, theaters aren’t open yet and this is a theater movie 100%.

Dennis Villeneuve is a master director and the cinematography was outstanding (same guy who did Rouge One, Grieg Fraser.) Great cast and the lead did fantastic for someone I never heard of. Mamoa was bad ***.

Han Zimmer score? Don’t have to say much more. Blast that Atmos theater or better yet see it in theaters. Sound was amazing

I never read the books are even watched the first one, so this universe is new to me and I’m geeked out will look into the other material.

I’ll be watching this multiple times.

If you can, watch it in theaters so WB has no choice but to make part 2. They sure spent some pennies on this movie.

Re: Dune (Part 1, 2021)

I'm not going to say I'm torn, as I will be watching this in theaters and I'll be giving it its due.

But if they wanted to do a sequel, then they wouldn't have done day & date on HBO Max as well. That being said, they may greenlight a sequel no matter what (or even if it does well on HBO Max but not necessarily theatrically).

They're digging their own grave by doing that, and that's their problem. This format hasn't been working, and they had so many opportunities to rectify this. I really should be voting with my wallet and not seeing this in theaters to spite them and get them to stop doing this, but then I'd be doing a disservice to myself not getting the best experience for this film.

Anyway, I hope to see this by Sunday!

Re: Dune (Part 1, 2021)

When asked if we’d be getting a sequel, the CEO of Warner said if you watch the movie and see how it ends, you basically know the answer.

I watched it last night on Max with my girlfriend, we planned to see it again tonight in theaters but she legit hated it so I have to go by myself [emoji23]. I’ll save my thoughts on it until after I see it the way it’s supposed to be seen, but I really doubt they’ll change.

Re: Dune (Part 1, 2021)

4/5

My experience (read 2 of the books, love Denis, been waiting on this for a while): I liked it a lot, but I didn't quite love it like I wanted to. Definitely a movie that needs to be seen in theaters, but also I'm glad I saw it first on HBO Max with subtitles. Denis must've heard people calling him the new Nolan and decided "Ok guess I gotta **** my sound mix up". There were times in theaters where Hans Zimmer's score was making it really hard for me to understand what was being said, but that's also probably because there's a lot of whispering in this movie for whatever reason. I still think the sound design is generally great, but that's kinda how I feel about a lot of aspects of the movie. It looks great when it looks great, but there's also kinda a muted color pallette once we move over to Arrakis, a lot of brown and grey. Ships look awesome, the tech seems pretty interesting, the costume design is great. Did not like the ending. I knew they were going to end in the middle of the book but they ended in the middle of a chapter, if they had just finished the chapter I think I would've been much more satisfied with the ending but that's a really personal gripe. Hopefully the wait for Part 2 isn't too long. Denis talked with Nolan on The Director's Cut podcast about how everyone was super exhausted at the end of the shoot, but man I really wish they had back to backed it. If Part 2 doesn't come out for 3 years that will be a rough wait.

My girlfriend's experience (Zendaya fan, watched the trailers but didn't follow the news): "I saw Zendaya in more outfits on the press tour than she had screentime in the movie. At NO point in the trailers did they ever say this is a Part 1. I feel like they lied to us. The movie isn't bad but it was kinda hard to follow at times. In HP, when you see red, you know it's Griffindor, green Slytherin, etc. I wish they would've color coded the houses so I could tell what was going on in the fight scenes. Rebecca Ferguson cries a lot." She had no idea they had split the book in half. I had to go back and watch the trailers to see if they really just never said Dune Part 1 and they really didn't, super odd marketing choice.

Re: Dune (Part 1, 2021)

Just got home from the cinema. I read the book ten years ago probably, and my mind was really blurry... now I've got to go and read it again. George Lucas most definitely grabbed some ideas from here for Star Wars.

As a fan of Villeneuve, I liked it a lot, specially the second half; I felt the first was a little slow and Chalamet kinda goes into "auto pilot" mode in some scenes... like I don't feel anything coming from his performance. Maybe I'm a little tough on him, but after watching him on "Beautiful Boy", it's hard to replicate that. Zendaya had more screen time on the trailers, probably.

That's true, they never said "Part 1" and they decided to go the same route when It was released in 2017; but there was no way for Denis (or any director) to adapt the entire saga in just one film. The scope is just too immense.

Re: Dune (Part 1, 2021)

I agree with that for sure and I feel like I’ve known forever, it just surprised me to see if you don’t follow movie news the first time you find out could be the title screen.
