I plan on getting a ps5 and xbox series x day one so I'm all in. Hopefully I'm able to get both or at least one or the other.

With EA Play being bundled with Game Pass, you could argue that Xbox is much more value (even considering the lack of stellar first party games, but that should change over this gen). I don't have tons of money to constantly play games (my kids and wife steal most of the money lol) so Game Pass lets me still be a gamer but not have to buy 60 buck games all the time.

I'm not married to any particular console. I was an xbox guy for the longest but my current gen console is a PS4.

With the price point of the S series, what am I losing versus the more expensive model? And what am I truly gaining over current gen consoles? I only buy digital copies and I really don't need to run any apps through my gaming console. I have plenty other devices for that stuff.

I honestly only play a couple of games (NBA 2K and Madden).

In terms an idiot like myself can understand. How big a jump, if any, is the Series S over the current Xbox One X?

From what I have seen - graphical quality should be approximately on par with one X. However it has the same CPU and ssd as series X so it will be capable of playing next gen games needing the enhanced cpu clocks and increased core count, faster load times, multiple pause/resume games, etc.

So essentially series x with a lower resolution or one x with enhanced os features and games not bottlenecked by the cpu; able to play next gen games.

That's pretty much it. The important parts for decision making really are just:

                          Series X
                          - 4k gaming
                          - Disc drive

                          Series S
                          - 1440p gaming
                          - No Disc drive

You don't need the performance tires, the ram air hood and the spoiler on a car you're only driving to the store and back in. The Series S hardware reflects lower target resolutions so you don't need the other high performance parts. It still retains similar power and capabilities otherwise (ray tracing, etc) just without the ability to push as many pixels as the Series X.

This is the value proposition being delivered, remains to be seen how successful they are. Enthusiasts will get a Series X either way.
