Every Kids Dream: An Option Run to The Top of College Football!

    Dynasty on PS3

Setting: All-American for both Offense and Defense EDIT: Adjusted to Heisman prior to Wyoming game in season 1.

    Injuries: On

    Fatigue: On

Quarter Length: 8 Minutes (Updated pre-season, Year 2 to gain slightly more realistic game stats)

    Minimum Speed Threshold: 40

    Home Field Advantage: On

    Ice-the-kicker: On

    Penalties

    Offsides: 60
    False Start: 60
    Holding: 60
    Facemask: 50
    Offensive P/I: 50
    Defensive P/I: 60
    KR/PR Interference: 60
    Clipping: 60
    Intentional Grounding: 60
    Roughing The Passer: 60
    Roughing The Kicker: 55

Custom AI Default Settings (50 across the board for both player and computer) EDIT: Adjusting CPU AI to 70 (75 pre-season, Year 2) for their offense. I don't control the Defense, currently, as I am the OC, but my defense has had too easy of a time through the first two games.

    Coach Starting Level: Default

    Progression Rate: Slow

    Story Lines:

Each season, I will roll a six-sided die (Edit: I will roll twice, to increase storylines), with the number it lands on (1-6) being the number of story lines I must create throughout the season. I will also use a number generator to select a number between 1-99 in order to identify the player the story impacts. If the die reveals the number 4, then I must select 4 random player numbers, of whom a story will be crafted. I will use this link to determine story lines (https://wheeldecide.com/index.php?id=339998) Thanks to parent22 for the link idea, whose Dynasty can be visited here: https://forums.operationsports.com/f...u-dynasty.html

    The Dynasty Itself:

A former 4th string running back for the UAB Blazers out of Conference USA transitioned to grad assistant and then on to Running Backs Coach for 3 seasons, but is finally getting a shot at an Offensive Coordinator position at a 1-Star university. This young upstart will run the Option Run Offense.

Since I currently reside out West, I have selected the Offensive Coordinator position with the New Mexico Lobos.

    Recruiting:

I won't handicap myself in regards to recruiting, like some do, but I will turn assistance off. (Edit: I will restrict my recruiting to states west of Texas, except for in cases of positions I need established at the beginning of the year. This begings in Year 2). If a player elects to leave early for the draft, I must let said player leave if his Overall Rating is 90+. If below that threshold, I can try to sway the athlete to stay. All athletes that wish to transfer, will be allowed to transfer out of the program.

    Career Progression:

I set it to slow. I will refrain from taking any head coaching job more than a single star greater than the program I am currently at. I, however, can take a OC position with a school that is two stars greater than my current program.

Example: If I am OC at a two-star program, I can accept an OC position with a four-star program, but can only accept a Head Coaching job at a three-star program.

    Let the Dreaming Begin!

Lobos Take Chance On Unproven OC

    Albuquerque, NM
    Lobos Football Writer, Paul Brown

University of New Mexico Athletic Director, Paul Krebs, announced the addition of a new member to the Lobos coaching staff this morning. Former University of Alabama, Birmingham (UAB) Running Backs Coach, Zach Moore, was named the new Offensive Coordinator following a brief statement by Krebs. The Lobos had gone 4-9 in 2012, which was a vast improvement over the 1-11 campaigns from the prior three seasons, but a contract dispute led to the opening of the OC role, providing newcomer, Coach Moore, with an opportunity.

"I'd like to begin by expressing my gratitude to Athletic Director Krebs, Head Coach, Justin Simmons and Defensive Coordinator, Antoine Irvin, for believing in my capabilities", Moore said. He went on to acknowledge the challenge of bringing his Option Run attack to the Lobos program, but noted, "it's a scheme that requires all 11 players on the field to work in harmony. If we're able to establish a cohesive unit on the field, at one time, then nothing can stop us."

Coach Moore, who also was a fourth-string running back for the UAB Blazers, expressed thanks to his alma mater for the many years of quality education and athletic knowledge the school had provided.

Head Coach Simmons was asked his thoughts on the new hire, "I'd say that it was a team effort on the selection, between myself, Krebs (Athletic Director) and Coach Anty (Defensive Coordinator, Antoine Irvin). The three of us reviewed lots of talented prospects, but felt Coach Moore was at the right point of development. I'm excited to see what his option attack can bring to the Lobos, and excited for us to build off our 4-9 campaign from last season."

When asked about his expectations, Coach Moore had this to say,"Nothing short of a conference title and a BCS Bowl. I'm confident in Coach Simmons and Coach Irvin, and I'm confident in myself, and believe we can bring the Lobos a Mountain West title."

The 27-year-old Moore was introduced to the team following the press conference. Projected starting running back, senior, Desi Pittman, was asked about learning a new scheme as a senior, "There's a lot of excitement around the locker room right now. I actually have a cousin who played in the CUSA against UAB while Coach Moore was the Backs Coach there; he seemed to have a lot of positive things to say about our new coach, so we're excited to have him and excited to learn."

Another aspect Coach Moore will contend with is recruiting. He wasn't considered a recruiting guru at UAB, but he also wasn't the main guy for offensive recruiting. "It'll be challenging for sure. I'm not from New Mexico, have had few ties with high school athletics in this part of the country, but I am eager to get out there, present our program to the young stars of tomorrow and sign some future leaders for Lobos football" Moore was quoted as saying.

The immediate challenge, as fr as the sportswriter can see, is can Coach Moore coach up the talent New Mexico has. We'll just have to wait and see.

Lobos Only See One Named to Pre-Season Confernce Team

        Albuquerque, NM
Lobos Football Sports Writer, Paul Brown

Senior Punter, Ed Hart, was the only New Mexico player named to the pre-season All-Mountain West Conference Team. Hart was named to the Second Team Mountain West squad. "I'm honored to get the recognition. I've worked very hard over the course of my career, and with this being my final season with the Lobos, this honor comes at the right time", Hart said in a statement outside the Lobos Athletic Performance Center.

Head Coach Justin Simmons stated that while he is proud of his senior punter for being recognized as 2nd Team All-Conference, he hopes that his skills are sidelined a bit more this season. "I hope Coach Moore's (Offensive Coordinator, Zach Moore) new offense translates to more first downs and fewer opportunities for Ed to punt", Coach Simmons said with a laugh.

The Lobos will find out how well their new offense performs and how well their 2nd Team All-MWC punter does on August 31st, against University of Texas, San Antonio.

New Mexico Picked To Finish Last In Conference

          Albuquerque, NM
Lobos Football Sports Writer, Paul Brown

Another season is upon us, and yet not much has changed. Mountain West Conference sports writers have Boise State selected to win the conference yet again, continuing the Broncos' dominance of this Group of 5 league. Meanwhile, despite improving on three-straight 1-11 seasons by going 4-9 last year, the Lobos of New Mexico are favored to end the season at the bottom of the conference yet again.

The Broncos, led by Senior Quarterback, Brian Downs, should face few challenges from within the league, but the Aggies of Utah State, led by Senior and 1st Team All-Conference Defensive End, Charlie Johnson, just may give them a fight when they met on the gridiron October 12th in Logan, Utah.

As for the Lobos, breaking in a new Offensive Coordinator, just as the program broke its run of 1-win seasons, may not be the way they wished to start the season, but Head Coach Justin Simmons is confident his Lobos can maintain the momentum. "We have a lot of talent returning. A lot of excitement surrounding our new offensive scheme. It presents some challenges for us, but our kids are up to meeting that challenge." Coach Simmons hopes to have surprised a few folks when the season concludes, "I'm confident we won't end where they predict we'll end."

The complete breakdown of the Mountain West outlook is as follows:

          1. Boise State
          2. Utah State
          3. Fresno State
          4. San Diego State
          5. Air Force
          6. Nevada
          7. San Jose State
          8. Colorado State
          9. Hawai'i
          10. Wyoming
          11. UNLV
          12. New Mexico

            Game Notes
This game in 2013 marks the first time these two programs have met on the gridiron. The Roadrunners of Texas, San Antonio are in their first season in Conference USA, following a single season with the Western Athletic Conference in 2012; just their second season in the FCS.

The Roadrunners have a stout defense, led by Impact Player and Senior Linebacker, Anthony Berry, that should keep the Lobos of New Mexico in check.

The Lobos will try to counter with their own Impact Player, in Senior Linebacker, Kelechi Smith, who should be a late-round draft pick in next year's NFL Draft.

Thanks for following. This is my first Dynasty on OS, after years of contemplating it. I hope to do OS and its members proud. I also have no affiliation with New Mexico, so this will allow me to research and learn about this small program. I look forward to the journey.

Lobos Defend Their Home Turf In Exciting Opener

                  Albuquerque, NM
Lobos Football Sports Writer, Paul Brown

The Lobos avoided disaster early and pulled out a victory over the Roadrunnners of the University of Texas, San Antonio inside University Stadium on Saturday, giving them a week one victory for the second year in a row. Twice, in the first quarter, the New Mexico special teams commited turnovers. Both times on muffed punts. The Lobo defense would stand strong when the first muffed punt set up great field position for the Roadrunners, but would surrender a 4-yard TD following the second mishap.

On top of the Special Teams woes, the offense struggled to run the newly-implemented Option Run, and an injury to starting Lobos quarterback, John Williams, thrust rarely-used back-up, Sam Sisk into the spotlight. Sisk, who is less of a scrambler than Williams, quickly took the helm with confidence. Offensive Coordinator, Zach Moore, in his first game with New Mexico and as an OC, adjusted his strategy to the back-up QB's strength; throwing the ball.
"It wasn't at all what we have practiced all off-season. But our rushing attack was having no real impact, and then Johnny goes down on the second series, and Sam's suddenly out there, eyes as big as saucers" said Coach Moore.

The Lobos offense methodically moved down field, mostly through the air, and finally broke the plain for a TD when a Sisk pass connected with Redshirt Freshman, Samson Thornburg. It was both Thornburg and Sisk's first TD for the Lobos. That score knotted the score at 7. The New Mexico defense stiffened on the ensuring Roadrunner drive, with Senior linebacker, Kelechi Smith, making two huge tackles, preventing the Roadrunners from picking up a first down. Smith would finish the game with a team and game-leading 11 tackles. "Kelechi was our bell-ringer out there today", said Defensive Coordinator, Antoine Irvin. "When we needed a play, he was there to make it. He's a real leader for our defense and I expect him to continue playing at an elite level."

With time melting down in the first half, Sisk once again led the Lobos down the field. A perfectly-timed swing pass to runningback, Desi Pittman, set up a 38-yard FG try for Senior kicker, Josh Brown. There was never any doubt, as it split the uprights, sending the hometown Lobos into the locker room at the half with a 3-point lead. "I think that final drive before the half really established a tone for this team. Our starting QB was out, our offensive scheme wasn't working, but for us to go down the field and get that field-goal was huge", noted Head Coach, Justin Simmons.

The visiting Roadrunners took the ball to start the second half, and picked up a single first down before the Lobos defense swarmed, led by a drive-ending sack by Danny Freeman. Securing the punt, the Lobos offense went back to work. A couple of completions by Sisk to wide receiver, Adam Pruitt, who led the team with 86 receiving yards, and a couple of succesful runs by Pittman, once again had the Lobos inside the ten. Immediately, fullback, Billy Fields would take an inside hand-off up the middle, juke right, and then dive in for a 9-yard TD, putting the Lobos up by ten, 17-7.

The ensuing drive for the Roadrunners ended when Ben Mitchell leaped in front of a slipping Roadrunner wideout and collected the first interception on the year for the New Mexico defense. "Mitchell is a ball hawk in disguise. His stats don't reflect how much of a nose he has for the ball, and we kinda like it that way, as the opposition doesn't know to keep an eye out for him", Defensive Coach, Antoine Irvin said.

On the next drive, starting QB, Williams, would return, only suffering from a nagging wrist injury. The offense didn't seem to suffer too much from the change under center, and OC Moore would try to convert back to the option run attack, but saw limited success. The offense would end up stopped just short of the redzone, setting up Brown for another FG, this time from 33-yards out. He connected, and it was suddenly 20-7 in favor of the home team early in the 4th quarter.

Desperate to get back into the game, the Roadrunners offense stormed down the field, scoring on a J. Powell TD run from the 3 yard line. That put a little bit more pressure on the Lobo offense, as the score was now 20-14, and another Roadrunner score could ruin the home-opener. It soon became clear, however, that the three-and-a-half prior quarters of playing Coach Moore's "keep-away ball" had left the Roadrunner defense depleted. The Lobos easily moved down the field, not just killing the clock, but also notching another TD by Pittman to put the game to rest.

Though the offense struggled, it did possess the ball for 19:45, while the Roadrunners were left with just 8:15 of possession time. "Our offense's slow, but consistent roll certainly helped our defense out today. Our guys on defense were able to stay fresh, and though we had a couple of turnovers early, our guys didn't get discouraged, and we were able to secure a huge win for Lobo nation" Head Coach Simmons said.

When asked if there will be a quarterback battle now that Sisk has proven he can be a succesful leader on the field, Coach Moore said, "We had our battle during the Spring and Summer, and while Sisk was outstanding today, essentially being the spark our offense needed, I feel confident that Williams will continue to start for us. He showed in the off-season to be able to run our Option Attack with greater success than Sam, and until Coach Simmons pulls the plug on my scheme, we'll run it."

When asked if there would be any major changes, Coach Simmons remained steadfast, "We have no reason to change. Honestly, we're not giving the Roadrunner defense enough credit. They did the work, their guys stayed in position, and shutdown our scheme, so we recognize their effort. This just challenges us to improve on how we run our offense."

For the second-straight season, the Lobos can work on things with a 1-0 mark on the schedule, and it's always better to be improving following a win than to be forced to improve following a defeat.

Next up for the Lobos, a trip to their rivals in El Paso and the Miners of UTEP.

This heated rivalry game gets another turn, as the 1-0 Lobos travel to El Paso, Texas to take on the UTEP Miners in their first game of the season. UTEP has a new Head Coach in Hunter Ryan, who gets his first head coaching gig at age 65, after serving as a Defensive Coordinator for Arizona State, Wyoming, and even his alma mater, Stanford. Ryan's offense will run a multi-look, which may confuse the Lobo defense. Defensive Coordinator, Antoine "Anty" Irvin, better have his wolves prepared to stop that wide-open attack.

Meanwhile, the question for the Lobo offense is which QB will we see under center; back-up, Sam Sisk, was exceptional filling in for the injured starter, John Williams, but Williams is the more fleet-footed, giving first-year Offensive Coordinator, Zach Moore, a better choice for his Option Run assault.

The Miners are favored by 6 in this heated rivalry game. Let's see if the Lobos can bring home a road win.

One down, eleven more to go. It's always good to pick up that first 'W', especially when you're not sure how the team will react to your scheme. Thanks for following.

I can already tell implementing my option attack will take some time. I didn't inherit great run-blocking lineman, so teams are just eating my ground game, at the moment. Fortunately, my QB-play has been sufficient.

Lobos, Miners Combine For 7 Turnovers In Sloppy Game

                              Albuquerque, NM
Lobos Football Sports Writer, Paul Brown

If you had asked New Mexico Head Coach, Justin Simmons, if he thought his team would beat rival, Texas, El Paso, while turning the ball over four times, he probably would have said not a chance. But fortunately for Coach Simmons, his Lobos squad managed to do just that, defeating the Miners 30-12 in a game that featured 7 turnovers between the two teams.

"The score does not reflect how that game transpired. When I shook Hunter's (UTEP Head Coach, Hunter Ryan) hand at the end of the game, we both just kinda chuckled at the way both our teams performed", Coach Simmons said.

"It was kind of a tale of two halves", Offensive Coordinator, Zach Moore, said following the game. "They coughed it up three times in the first half, and we gave it up once in the first and three times in the second half. We were trying to give the game away."

It truly was a tale of two halves, as the Miners fumbled on two consecutive possessions, providing the Lobos with great field position each time, but only once did it result in a touchdown for the Lobos. The first TD coming off the arm of quarterback, John Williams, who tossed a 17-yard strike to running back, Keith Wallace. The Miners would respond with a FG by J. Booker from 36 yards. But the Lobo offense, for the second week in a row struggling to make headway on their newly-implemented option attack, returned to their aerial assault, getting the Lobos down to the 2-yard line, where running back, Desi Pittman dove in for another score.

Up 14-3, when yet another Miner mishap gives the ball right back to the Lobos. Only this time, the Lobos immediately return the favor with a fumble of their own. UTEP would work their way down the field, with most yards coming on a single pass play from Ernst to Beck, which covered 38 yards. The Lobos defense would hold the Miners to a FG try, which Booker drilled from 38.

The second half saw the Lobos force a three and out on defense, with their offense plucking away on the ground and air. They would settle for a FG try by kicker, Josh Brown, who connected from 23 yards away. The Lobos defense would force another punt, shutting out the Miners in the 3rd quarter, while the offense would pick up another TD when Williams threw a 5-yard slant to wideout, Adam Pruitt. Up 24-6 in the second half and the Lobo faithful, who made the trip across the border were thinking this would end up as a route.

                              Not quite.

Coach Moore's offensive scheme to play, what he has described as, "Keep away ball" had worked well once again, by possessing the ball, keeping the opponent's defense on the field and tiring them out. The Lobos defenders were fresh most of the gane, forcing yet another three and out, but...

That's when the first of three interceptions struck. The Lobo offense had marched down the field, using a nice balance of running and passing, but once inside the redzone, an errant pass out to the right was snagged by Miner's defender, K. Jordan, who also led his team with 7 tackles. That ended any kind of threat the Lobos had to close the lid on the game, and allowed the Miners to stay in it.

The Lobos defense, once again, crushed the UTEP drive when Josh Williams broke through the line for a drive-ending sack. The Lobos secure the ensuing punt, and all is well, right?

Not quite, as Williams, facing 3rd and 8, dropped back and threw his second interception of the game. This time, the Miners would make it count, as Ernst heaved a bomb to Beck for 34 yards. The Miners would try for the 2 pont conversion, but it would fail.

Leading 24-12, but not completely out of the woods, the Lobos still needed to drive the ball, while also bleeding the clock. Disaster would strike one more time, however, as Williams would throw his 3rd interception of the half, giving the home team Miners some flicker of hope. The Lobo defense would once again rise up and squash any doubt, however.

"Those guys on the other side of the ball just kept bailing us out all night", said Pittman. "Johnny (Williams) threw some passes, that, maybe he shouldn't have thrown, but give their defense credit, they just kept playing."

The Miners wouldn't muster up any further threat, and the Lobos offense would milk the clock away on one final drive that ended in a 4-yard TD pass from Williams to tight end, Matt Nicholson, who caught a game-high six passes. That final TD toss drew some boos from the hometown crowd, as the game was pretty much in hand, but as Williams describes it, it sounds more serendipitous than intended, "Yeah, I can understand the boos about that last TD pass. Coach (Moore) wasn't calling for us to run up the score. He had called a run, and I checked out of it based upon their defense. I honestly scrambled to my right, mostly just trying to kill clock with a little run. But as I start to get engaed by their cornerback, instinct told me to throw the ball, so I just tossed it up. I'm left-handed, rolling to my right, getting yanked down by a defender, and I just kind threw it up, and was lucky that Matt (Nicholson) was there to catch it." To add a little drama, the extra-point try was missed by kicker, Josh Brown, finalizing the score at 30-12.

UTEP head coach, Hunter Ryan, drops his first game as a head coach, and the Miners will start off their season 0-1. The victory for the Lobos gives them a 43 to 31 advantage over the Miners in the series. New Mexico has no time to rest, as they take on yet another rival, when they travel to Arizona to take on the Wildcats.

"We've got a lot of work to do, a lot of things to clean up on offense. Our defense has been stellar, though, and that's been great to see with Coach Anty (Defensive Coordinator, Antoine Irvin). I'll sit down with Zach (Offensive Coordinator, Zach Moore) and see what we need to do to improve his option scheme and how we can improve on Johnny's decision-making." Head Coach Simmons stated.

Mistakes aside, the Lobos are now 2-0, and are starting to display a fierce character on defense. They'll need it next week in Tuscon.
