Managing Career of Dirk Diggler - OOTP20

Hey guys, so I am going to be giving it another crack over here in the baseball section. I recently began playing Out Of The Park Baseball 20 and Im a big fan. So i figured I might as well start fresh and keep track of my progression.

I will be making a manager and trying to work my way up the Big Leagues. For now I will be starting in the lower levels! I hope you guys enjoy following along as much as I enjoy progressing.

Updates will be screenshot based, or tweet style keeping it simple for myself. I hope you all stay tuned!

      Who Is Dirk Diggler?
Unknown Tabbed To Lead Lake Monsters in 2019 Season

Burlington, VT - There is still snow on Centennial Field but that hasn't stopped the Oakland Athletics from making baseball moves in Vermont. The Lake Monsters have named Dirk Diggler their new manager for the 2019 season.

Diggler is a an unknown in the baseball world and its a question how he got the job. When asked all Diggler had to say was, "I applied.".

He will be replacing Aaron Nieckula who was skipper for four seasons and had great success with the Lake Monsters. Despite finishing 39-37 last season, (thanks for the prospects Oakland) Vermont was able to win a title in 2017.

As of two weeks go, Diggler, 28, was a golf course superintendent in New Jersey, probably making more than he is now, but the dude must love baseball. The highest level of competition he has seen is NCAA Division 2 baseball where he played at East Stroudsburg in Pennsylvania. Other than that, he has two NJ High School state championships to his name as a player. Not much of a resume to go off of huh?

With the season just four months away its almost time to put the skis away and break out the spikes!

*Real-Life Note* Hayden Wesneski was drafted in the 6th round by the New York Yankees, out of Sam Houston St. He currently plays for the Pulaski Yankees of the Appalachian League. Which is Rookie level. The rosters used are from opening day, obviously before the MLB Draft in June. We are certainly glad to have him though!

Baseball is Back in Burlington, Lake Monsters Go Down In Opener
Ninth Inning Rally Falls Short for Vermont

Burlington, VT - There was just under 2,000 fans on tap at Centennial Field on the campus of the University of Vermont for the Vermont Lake Monsters opening day game vs the Tri-City ValleyCats.

Vermont would jump out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning of Manager Dirk Diggler's first game at the helm, unfortunately it wouldn't last long in an 8-5 loss.

The ValleyCats were leading 5-3 in the top of the 8th when a walk and an error by Vermont second basemen Marcos Brito, would lead to a 3-run homer from ValleyCat DH Juan Paulino.

The homer would prove to be the game-winning hit as Vermont would pick up two runs in the final frame thanks to a sac-fly and an rbi single from Brito.

In his professional debut Vermont SP Hayden Wesneski would last just 3.2 innings, giving 10 hits and 5 earned runs. His opponent Tanner Andrews wouldn't fare much better lasting just 4 innings.

When asked about his reaction to his teams first game, Dirk Diggler said "You know, sometimes baseball is that simple, the team who plays harder and scores more runs, wins."

                  From the Managers Desk

I just got off the phone with the big boss Derek Frost up in Oakland, among other things, it was mentioned I had to tell a player he was being sent down. Yeah sent down from Low Low Low A to Rookie ball, rough right?

The player being sent down is Hayden. He started for us just last night, granted he didn't pitch well, but it was professional debut. But that's the business right? He's being moved to the Arizona Summer League, so I was honest with him and told him to look at it like a vacation. Ive always wanted to go to Arizona.

Taking his roster spot is going to be 3B Mickey McDonald, he's been playing with Beloit out in the Midwest League. Which is regular old A ball I'm told? SO many levels. He's probably going to be a little pissed. Anyway he played in Vermont for about 2 weeks in 2017, so it'll be nice to get a "Vet" in the clubhouse, i mean locker room.

PS: The PR department said I had to do this..I hope I don't have to write one of these for every player we get? This is minor league baseball, there's more moves than Mike Jackson in the 80s.

Diggler Earns First Win as Manager, Vermont Rally's in Ninth
Lake Monsters Again Rally in the Ninth Inning, This Time Get the Win

Burlington, VT - Well that didn't take long! Just two days into the season our Lake Monsters have defeated the Tri-City ValleyCats 4-3 in walk-off fashion to earn Coach Diggler his first career win.

Former 2016 draft pick Skylar Szynski took the ball for the Lake Monsters and went a solid 5.1 innings, scattering across five hits and two earned runs, while striking out five. He would leave the game with Vermont down 2-1.

The game would be tied at two heading into the ninth when the ValleyCats would tack on a run off of Vermont closer Michael McAvene. With the 1-run lead Tri-City manager Ozney Guillen (son of Ozzie Guillen) went to his own closer Devin Conn.

Conn would walk the first batter he faced to open the inning. A one out single from 1B Blake Brady would make it first and second and this is where things got interesting.

Diggler would send Matt O'Neill to the plate, pinch-hitting for catcher Santis Sanchez. The first pitch he would see would find the backstop allowing the runners to move up a base. With both runners now moved up into scoring position, O'Neill would deliver as he smacked a single up the middle allowing both runners to score and give his team the win.

When asked about the winning hit O'Neill said "You know, put a star next to this win, what a great feeling, getting that first win, its great."

The win means Vermont and Try-City split their brief two game series to open up the season. From here the Lake Monsters hop on the bus and head to Norwich, Connecticut to face the Connecticut Tigers for a two game set.

Poche' Leads Vermont to 8-0 Win
Norwich, CT - Jared Poche' made his first start of the 2019 season and was marvelous in his seven innings of work earning the win. Poche' wouldn't allow a run and would strike out 5 walking two.

The Lake Monsters tacked on three runs in the 4th inning extending the lead to 5-0, highlighted by leadoff hitter CF Ben Spitznagel's RBI triple. Third basemen Mickey McDonald added his 2nd RBI in the 8th with a run scoring single.

Wander Gaunte would finish the final two innings for Vermont, working out of a bases loaded jam in the ninth.

"Just going to relax and enjoy this one as best we can, I mean we're at the Motel 8 on Martin Luther King Blvd. So..yeah." Coach Diggler said after the game.

Vermont Wins 2-0, Earns Second Straight Shutout
Norwich, CT - Despite having their roster ravaged by the big GM Derek Frost on Monday morning after their 8-0 win, the Lake Monsters were able to secure a 2-0 win Monday night. Sweeping the two game set vs the Connecticut Tigers.

Grant Gambrell got the start for Vermont and he provided a second straight quality start for the team, going 5.1 innings, giving up just three hits and striking out seven.

It was short stop Matt Golda and catcher Mickey McDonald who provided the run scoring hits in the win for Vermont. Golda was making his professional debut as he was just drafted two weeks ago, out of sunny Palm Beach State Community College in Florida.

Michael McAvene earned his first save of the season for Vermont, who moves to 3-1 on the season.

That was a nice little two game set there for the boys. Really excited with the pitching staff overall. Not allowing a run is pretty damn impressive even if it just a two game set.

In that game we did lose our best outfielder Noah Vaughan. He tore his calf muscle and our trainers are telling me he is going to miss four months. AKA the rest of the season. I feel for the kid, he's got great potential and he's only 22. He was one of our leading hitters in the early going.

Screen Shot 2019-11-02 at 10.50.57 AM

The Monday morning following our 8-0 win Mr. Frost called and again dismantled my roster. I understand the draft just happened, kids are signing, Summer Leagues are beginning, but this is A ball, and it just makes my job harder with all these new faces.

It wasn't all bad news for our players though as some were getting promoted, including our leadoff hitter and CF Ben Spitznagel, who is skipping Beloit and heading to High-A Stockton. Also being promoted was our 2B Alex Henwood, he is heading to Beloit. If you'r keeping track at home, that is two starting outfielders gone.

To me the biggest surprise was our 1B Blake Brady getting called down to the Arizona Summer League, he was hitting .444 so far with a few ribbies.

We did receive some young talented players in return, though I couldn't tell you who is who just yet. One does stick out and that's Matt Golda who produced right away in his first start with an RBI single. That kid is full of life, my god. I hope its Adderall...

I'll finish this up now, I have a massage in 30 minutes I don't want to be late. Sun-Yu gets mad and I know she has a skill set in something far more sinister. ANYWAY, saw the power rankings for week one came in, were at #4, I'll take that.

Looking forward to this three game set at home vs Hudson Valley. Lets take it to em.
