Why can't I steal bases since the patch?

Why did Sony take away the ability to steal bases with the most recent patch? I spam the steal button over and over and my guys don't even move. It's really frustrating!

They didn’t. I stole several bases post patch. I have upped my game with stealing bases this year. They made it earned like it should be this year.

Know the catcher, the pitcher, the runner. Check player quirks, steal on proper counts and hopefully the pitch is conducive to a good pitch to steal on.

I hold down L2 now and at a RHP pitcher first movement let it go. With LHP.....it is murder to steal sometimes. Depends on their pitch selection and the type of pitcher they are, how big of a leg kick they have in the stretch, their quirks...it all maters.

Stealing IMO is no doubt harder on 17 but far more rewarding. On previous games...it was a cake walk.

Thanks! I'll give that a try. Usually I just tap L2 but I've never held it. That may work better.

Been working fine for me, and I just tap the button. Might be a bug. Either way might be a good idea to submit a bug report.

I used to just tap L2 as well and the jumps runners would get was abysmal a vast majority of the time. I know that's different then your issue of them never stealing in the first place. I now utilize the same method Armor mentioned and have had much more success.

It is very rewarding getting that jump after watching the pitchers windup and getting a feeling for their timing. Side note, if you press and hold L2 and notice they are going into the slide step delivery just continue to hold it and the runner won't take off, saved me a couple times from what would have been an easy out most likely.

Having no issues here either. I use the tap method as well so that it goes off of the players ratings. Near the top of the league in steals this season.

It would be nice if there was a way to practice stealing and throwing out base stealers. I think I finally got the hang of throwing out base stealers but took me 2 months of trial and error in h2h to get the hang of it.

For base stealing I'll try holding L2 - if I don't forget about it since reading this.

To piggy back on this thread, is there not a way to manually steal second when you have runners on first and third? I've tried 2 or 3 different times and every time it sends the runner on third home regardless of me holding the left stick towards first when sending the runner. It works fine if I just tap L2 but moment I press and hold L2 it sends both runners without fail. Is there something I'm doing wrong or is it impossible to manually steal second with runners on the corners?

You have to use the left stick to select the base runner you want to have steal as you push l2

I can't be successful in stealing anymore, now, I can have runners with 90+ speed and stealing have less than a 50% success rate stealing second, it's pretty ridiculous. It used to be too easy, with a 100% success rate with anyone over 60 speed, now it's like I can't even consider it unless Billy Hamilton is on first, and even then it's too big of a risk to be worth it if I need the run.

I've tried the holding L2 and releasing it method, and it's worked in previous years without any problem, whenever trying it this year though, there's always a huge delay between when I release the button and when the runner goes, looking at the replies in this topic, is that just me? I can steal just fine in RTTS, there's no delay in making my runner take off when I push the left stick towards second, but when I try to steal in DD (for example), I can't take off on the pitcher's first movement because if that's when I let go of L2, he won't actually start running until the ball is pretty much released. The only way to get a good jump with it seems to be by just guessing, and releasing L2 a second before the pitcher's first movement.

That or tapping L2, which results in unrealistically awful jumps almost every time even with 90+ in the stealing attribute (which seems like a pointless attribute now, I noticed before having that higher tended to lead towards better jumps, but now everyone gets the same jump regardless)

I do, even mentioned that I hold it there the entire time until he takes off so it's not an issue of me not selecting the runner with the left stick. I've tried it a few times and everytime the runner on 3rd breaks for home and it's an easy out. Now if I tap L2 for the auto steal then it works as it should, granted he then gets a terrible jump and is thrown out too often for my liking. I'll try again and hold L2 longer and see if that makes a difference, it's one of those situations that rarely happens with the right guy on first so I don't get many chances to even attempt it but I know I'm at least 0/2 doing it with the runner being tagged out at home both times.

I played exhibition and it's completely different. Are you having trouble like I am in Franchise mode stealing bases because it's been impossible to steal there.

Not at all, I went 31/36 in steals for the month of July. In June I went 9/14 stealing but that was when I was still just tapping L2 and letting them auto steal. My only issue is with runners on the corner and not wanting to send the runner home, if I can figure that out then I'm golden.
