    Rashidi's NBA 2K16 Ratings & Analysis

    Starting Point Guard Ratings

With NBA 2K17 just over the horizon, I've decided to dust myself off and offer my take on the state of NBA 2K's player ratings.

About a year and a half ago, I fell out of not just the roster scene but video games altogether. I took a job that prevented me from watching basketball anywhere near as much as I'd like to. When I wasn't working, I found myself out of the house, spending my days and nights playing Magic: The Gathering in various card/comic shops across NYC. Almost overnight, I found myself more and more removed from the game of basketball, a sport I loved and followed for 20 years.

I also found my presence in the community to be mostly unnecessary. Mike Stauffer took the NBA 2K roster editing position I had been angling/pining for the better part of a decade, and he didn't look back. He's done of a heck of a job making the need for my voice largely irrelevant. The 2K rosters are significantly cleaner and there is a clear ideology set in place. The rosters aren't perfect (they never will be irrespective of who is in charge), but the various nitpicks are mostly due to a lack of time/labor hours given what 2K Sports is asking of him.

In a lot of respects, I have a unique take on the roster process. Some have called me the grandfather of roster editing. I'm the original NBA 2K roster editor, and it took years for anyone to get up to my level. I sold my roster files on memory cards to make a buck in college - there are very few people who can say they pulled a profit from this particular hobby. My historical and technical knowledge of 2K's rating/attribute history over the last 15 years is unparalleled by any amateur, and there are people who started tinkering with this game long after I did who now have jobs within the company. It's not all roses though - while I've been doing this longer than anyone else, my editing process is largely outdated and I'm too stubborn to learn the modern editing tools that might make my life easier (and actually produce a roster file). Just like Grandpa, except 40 years younger.

Overall, I'm largely content to let others get their time in the limelight. The torch passed a few years ago and I have no desire to take it back. I have fond memories of the people I met and the opportunities I generated from just sitting in front of a computer screen, forgetting about my day-to-day life, and just focusing in-depth on basketball... So much so, that having found some free-time, I decided to give it a go, for old-time's sake. For the younger generation, this is what Vintage Rashidi was all about.

    --------------------------------------------------------

I edited the ratings for all 30 projected starting point guards for the 2016-17 season. The listed difference is from the final NBA 2K16 roster. They will be sorted by Overall in this checklist's order.

Questions about attribute decisions are welcome, and I will do my best to explain the reasoning. There are certainly some that may not make sense but do have statistical basis (for example, a player's defensive effectiveness can vary from year-to-year based on a number of factors). As usual, I use 2K's own formulas and scales wherever possible, and am extremely limited in my bias thanks to the cold, hard nature of numbers.

Collectively, these 30 players dropped 37 points in Overall rating. This is mainly due to the 2K formula weighting "Draw Foul" too heavily. Most PGs are simply rated too highly here.

Something I thought wasnt possible, to like Rashidi even more ... I endorse the new Rashidi (approach), more reflective and with a much more (needed) developed emotional intelligence.

This seems to become a great thread for debating and of where to get 2K and NBA knowledge.

Best wishes my friend ... would always be gratefull for letting me port your 2K11 2K12 roster to the PS3 and for offering me to help get a PS3 when it went down, while I declined your help, am more than eternally gratefull and at your services !... a great Roster editor and a better human being !

Nice ratings. Just have a couple of questions.

Why did you drop: Curry's 3 point rating? And Rubio's on-ball defense (you mentioned this as a strength)?

Why are Kemba and Kyrie so far apart in playmaking when their AST/G are very similar per minute?

Didn't meet scale. Curry's Moving 3pt is the reason he is good, I'm certain no other player in history would get a 90+ here.

And Rubio's on-ball defense (you mentioned this as a strength)?
Rubio's defense is a strength (much like Jason Kidd), but it's not because he locks down smaller/quicker guards. There are other defensive attributes he rates highly in.

Why are Kemba and Kyrie so far apart in playmaking when their AST/G are very similar per minute?
This is a good catch. Kyrie does not have a good A/T ratio (2.0) and is penalized for it. Kemba meanwhile has 88 Pass IQ and 94 Pass Accuracy but given his assist rate and mediocre 2.6 A/T ratio that's probably a bit high. I'll make adjustments next time I turn the game on.

                    Re: Rashidi's NBA 2K16 Ratings & Analysis

Rashidi, never got to enjoy your rosters because I had to have a PS so I could have a good baseball game all these years. Even still I always too a look at your blog, and what you would put here, to see what you had to say, because not only do you understand the game of basketball, but you understood how 2k's rating scale worked, and you edited according to their scale, and I always respected your view on players ratings, even if once in a while I didnt quite agree, but it was rare that I didnt agree with rating of a player.

NBA2k since they hired some from here the game has improved even in the roster ratings, although Im not a fan of their scale, as I dont believe its a true HOF scale like they tried to say last year, but its improved, and Im sure Beds only has a limited time to work with on this and why tendencies are so screwed up each yr.

I got to say I like the guys they hired to work for them, but I think its a shame that NBA2k didnt hire you, but then again you seem to be a little bit like me and tell it how it is, even if they wont like it, and maybe those at NBA2k prefer guys who always say yes to everything they say.

                      Re: Rashidi's NBA 2K16 Ratings & Analysis

                      Hey Rashidi

Even though I play 2K since 2K13 only, I've followed your work for a long time on your blog and here on OS because all the edits you made always seemed close to the reality of the game.

Now, what's a bit frustrating is that after having seen those ratings changes for that amount of time, we still cannot use the analysis and formulas you use to make the changes by ourselves.
For example, you posted those edits on the 30 points guards, and the Draw Foul rating turned out to be too good for most of those players. So maybe I'd want to go further by doing attributes changes by myself with the other positions and put them into NBA 2K17, using the scales and formulas (and reflexions; for the ones that are more subjective) you use yourself. But we don't know your formulas for Draw Foul attribute or for any attribute in the game.

I don't understand why we don't tbh, but having access to these informations would help a lot roster makers and allow new discussions about which stats to use or not to use for which rating/badge in NBA 2K17 and the following versions of the game.

                      Big up from France

They definitely would never have hired DaCzar or OG if that were the case. 2K differs from EA so much in this regard that I believe the higher-ups surely pride themselves on it. Listening to the consumer and trusting in their most passionate (honest) fans is exactly why the game and franchise got to where it is today.

Yeah DaCzar definitely dont seem like he would be a yes man, and I really like OG, both guys have a lot of knowledge, and the game has made huge strides these past couple years.

I do think there are times when they listen a little too much to the online whiners, and make changes that effects things negatively. But overall Id say NBA2k guys are like those that make MLBTS, they tend to listen to what the consumer says and try to improve upon it.
