Unlocking WWE 2K's Online Potential May Be the Key to Its Long Term Success

The hype train for 2K Games' WWE 2K17 got underway after Monday's announcement that 'The Beast Incarnate' Brock Lesnar would be gracing the cover of this year's game. As an added bonus, we were also presented with an October 11 release date on Xbox One, PlayStation 4, Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3.

So, as we look forward to the release of the game later this year, it's time to start questioning how it might improve upon last year's effort. At a guess, we might be treated to further expansion of the game's substantial roster and suite of creative tools. The series' recent transition to more of an ultra-realistic representation of the action inside the squared-circle will surely evolve for the third year running, too. All of that is good stuff, and it would be enough to convince the hardcore fans like me to invest for another year. That said, if 2K wants to generate an even bigger user base for the series, it needs to work on captivating those current non-believers.

An online universe would be amazing and do wonders for increasing the replayability of the game.

Online Universe would be fantastic. I think what WWE 2K is missing is that one feature that will bring the casual fan back to play the game. Online Universe may be it.
As the lovely username suggests, yes I am a Braves fan and a Vols fan.

I just wish they would make drastic improvements to the Universe mode, specifically making the rivalry system more dynamic and fun. We need run-ins and promos, branching storylines....anything other than having the same 2 guys wrestle 3 out 4 weeks leading into the PPV, where they wrestle again.

Also, it would be great to have more slots for rivalries, maybe 5-7 per show, as well as more slots for championships for each show. I don't care about having a Divas championship in my early 90s WCW Universe, you know? Let me add in custom titles.

The online concept is cool as well, but I like the idea of being able to customize and control my Universe.

Not a fan of the online stuff. Maybe that's because I hate the whole ultimate team and I don't play well with others?

I do agree with DBMcGee3 though. Universe mode is fun for a while till it's limitations get on your nerves. I miss GM mode and just because it gave a point to rivalries. There was a reason you had big name wrestlers fighting each other. There were consiquenses too. If they do TOO much, they get injured. You still had limitations but they made sense. I like hardcore matches and in universe I can have '01 Kane in one every week. Unless I get pummeled he's back next week to do it again. In old GM mode, Kane fought 3 or 4 hardcore matches and then needed 2 weeks off or more. He also would be wrestling with a bum body part for the last week or so.

I don't really care about an online Universe, but I'd support the idea because I assume any interesting changes would also carry over to running it offline.

                See, Universe Mode is realistic.

I just want big improvements to offline Universe mode since that's all I play WWE games for. Since i do write ups i need to have more things I can do to keep things fresh. I would have not used the rivalry function last year if not for the lack of cutscenes. Allow me to make matches without getting rid of the rivalry so i don't have Wyatt and Bryan facs each other in the same match every week. Just bring some things from GM mode into Universe and I'll be good.

Unlocking Universe modes potential lies in actually having a universe that seems more alive. Online would be a cool addition but right now the mode offers little incentive to play. Its all pretty bland and predictable as is. I would rather see resources used to make it worth playing for an extended time before adding an online mode.

I agree this does happen more than it should, but generally just with the mid card. You aren't going to see Ambrose and Rollins go head to head in singles matches 4 straight weeks, leading into a title match at the PPV.

You may see them involved in tag matches against one another, interfering in each other's matches, or jumping one another back stage, but never multiple consecutive weeks of wrestling, and pinning each other, which is what basically HAS to happen in the in-game rivalries. You change a match, rivalry wiped. I've even had the rivalry wiped for intentionally getting DQ'd. By the time the PPV rolls around, I'm so tired of the matchups that the enjoyment is basically gone.

Flawed system, needs lots of work and a heapin' helpin' of unpredictability.

I'd like some online stability before they worry about unlocking their full potential with more online modes.

I shouldn't have to wait 20, 30 minutes for an online tag-team match.

I'd be happy with a GM-type mode though, however I've said that for years and doubt we'll get it this year.
