Worst loss you've experienced as a fan

In the spirit of the same titled thread over in the Pro Football sub-forum.... whats5the worst loss you've experienced as a college football fan?

Mine is Penn State's 2008 loss at Iowa. Could've played in the national championship that year if not for that one.

It would be really easy to say 2004 @ LSU with all the Serna missed PAT's, but Serna was so absurdly good for the rest of his career and he won games for us for the next 3.9 after that, and I have no doubt that what he went through that night made him the great kicker he ended up being, so I'm still going to say more good than bad came out of that game.

So, I'm going to say 2013 to Washington. It wasn't a gutwrenching close game like most people in this thread will have. It was 48-0 after 3 quarters on senior night. It was an utter embarrassment and it was the first times in almost 15 years I actually shut an Oregon State game off before it was over. It was a pathetic display of apathy. I grew up watching a lot of 2-9 teams who were lucky if they could eek out a win over a 1-AA school, but I was never ashamed to be an Oregon State fan like I was that night when they plain quit.

2005-06 season, I believe. Virginia @ North Carolina. I attended this game.

UVA, led by "that dad-gum number 18" Marques Hagans at quarterback (as retired head coach Bobby Bowden so eloquently put it) had pulled off its once-in-every-two-decades upset of Florida State. Morale in the Virginia fan base was as high as I can ever recall it being; Al Groh had the program on the cusp and the Wahoos were about to turn the corner.

Then we go down to Chapel Hill and lose to the Tar Heels by the final score of 7 to 5 in what was easily the worst-played game of football I have ever seen. It was almost entirely played between the two teams' 35-yard lines with absolutely nothing eventful at all happening while the whole crowd baked in the sun. The four hour ride home from that game was absolutely miserable.

It wasn't as pivotal as when FSU destroyed #6-ranked UVA in Tallahassee by the count of 36 to 6 or something the following year - Al Groh's program never reached that height again, and arguably that game was the tipping point. It also wasn't as profoundly stupid as a different game in Chapel Hill where Al Groh successfully challenged and overturned a "field goal no good" call for his kicker Chris Gould. However, in terms of games that I have personally experienced, the UVA - UNC contest was easily the worst, for so many reasons.

But that did give us the greatest thread in the history of the CFB forum.

To answer your question, it would have to be 2006 OSU. That was a great, great game, and it sucked to be on the wrong end of it.

I wasn't watching the Kordell Stewart game, but the story goes that my uncle threw a patio chair off his deck that shattered into pieces on the driveway.

App State was pretty bad, but 1) I didn't have BTN yet at the time, so wasn't watching and 2) Michigan actually went on to have a decent season after that.

Enjoy. But beware - it gets a little weird.

That thread made me sad. That was when Texas Tech was one of the best teams in the country.

Re: Worst loss you've experienced as a fan

Depends on what kind of "worst" you're going for.

In terms of heart-breaking, oh-so-close losses, I'd go with the 2009 Big 12 Championship game against Texas. Defense played beyond amazing, but the offense was so bad they couldn't even get the ball in the end zone 1 time. 4 field goals, 0 TDs. Losing on a last second field goal didn't help either.

If you want flat out embarrassing losses, it's the 2012 Big Ten Championship against Wisconsin(or any recent loss to Wiscy, really) and the 2007 game against Kansas where KU won 76-39. **** Bill Callahan.
Maybe throw in the 2001 Colorado game as well.

I live in Omaha so I remember watching that Big 12 title game with my Husker faithful friends. That Colt McCoy incomplete-out-of-bounds-but-did-time-expire-or-not? review had me afraid for my life.

As a Kansas St. fan, it has to be the 1998 Big 12 Title game against Texas A&M.

We were so close to playing Tennessee for the National Title.

It is still painful to watch highlights of that game.

                              Most significant ?

                              2014 BCS National Championship game.

Should have, could have, and would have.
