Playing with Goalie Attributes EA Style

As the title says I'm messing with the attributes for goalies for offline rosters. I did the same with the 2k10 goalies (CLICK HERE FOR LINK TO THE 20 PAGE MADNESS) and decided that after a few beers I was going to try to do the same for 14. ALso did the global edits that are in MLB 2k12 in MKharsh's rosters.

Basically what I am trying to do is keep these 14 goalies from being so frantic at times, really lower the success of short side top shelf shots and create more rebound goals instead of clean snipe goals all the time (big fan of garbage goals).

So far so good. I have always wanted goalies to have an attribute called "first shot" then one called "recovery save'. Trying to create that one way or the other. STill early in this, and honestly, the attributes don't seem as responsive as 2k, so not sure how much I'll be able to do.

I will try to post a video in a bit as I am still testing and need to go pour a new beer.

So far for Tuuka Rask (I have only tested butterfly goalies so far, but they all seem to play the same anyway, which is why I don't mind global edits. Let hands, 5 hole, rebound control and recovery separate our goalies).

updated 8/2/15

Goalie Edit:

Player style must be hybrid. And all goalies have a 1 (yes) for hidden attribute "stick down"

Glove high 99
Glove Low 99
Stick high 99
Stick Low 99
speed 57
agility 99
5 Hole 99
rebound control 45
angles 36
aggressiveness 60
Consistency 0
poise 99
save recovery 99
poke check 36
vision 99

Skater edit:

Offensive awareness 36 *
Defenese awareness 36 *
Pass accuracy, discipline, puck control : subtract 30
hitting power, shot accuracy: subtract 20

* as long as those two attribute are equal the puck will remain loose. The lower the number, the looser the puck play. The higher, the stickier to the tape it is.

Bingyp and I have been testing:
- decreased passing. -30pts globally for all skaters
- decreased discipline. -30pts globally for all skaters

Bingyp's also been testing:
- decreased puck control. -30pts globally.

Bias edits (can only be done with EA DB Editor or NHL View) Pass-Carry 5, Off-Def 6 (but may have put that one backwards, it may be 11), Shoot-Pass 10 Globally (will double check those numbers)

20150802003623 has the shogun edits. the game start ratings will show offense and defense with 1 star each and goalie will have about 4. That way you'll know you have the edited roster.

20140910232003 is the straight up conversion. No edit.

201508020000835 is the full edit and also the hidden bias edits if you wanted to test that while I'm still fiddling with the numbers. (Hidden Skater Bias Global (Pass-Carry 3, Off-Def 11, Shoot-Pass 11 Globally) Next test will be 4/10/12)

I'm using the bias edit roster.

Sounds like a cool project. Out of curiosity, how are you going about with these edits? That is, when you say that you are trying to lower the chances of clean goals, how are you going to modify the goalie behaviour just from editing the attributes?

Re: Playing with Goalie Attributes EA Style

Yeah, I max, min or middle the the attributes that I find cause the issues. For 2k10 the goalies used the wrong save selection most times, often out of position by warping and very very easy to beat on breakaways because they would go to butteryfly poke check animation but really had no way of going backwards to take away the net they left gaping. They were also quite frantic, like they were on speed (same as the fielding in MLB 2k12, FRANTIC).

If you try 2k10 now with TSOeliot and Fiddy's last roster you'll see that goalies are, not quite 2k8 level, but damn close in my opinion. Either way, an improvement on default 2k10 goalies.

Thought I'd try the same with EA. If you do Free Skate, you'll see that once you bring the puck inside the faceoff dots in the slot the goalie will drop. If you just stand there, you can find the spot just right. Stickhandle in front of the dots in the slot, goalie down, pull stick back.....goalie up....push forward, goalie down. No threat, just programmed that way.

Trying to work with that as well as trying to make these creeps move when they push. I hate watching them in butterfly like someone has a magnet under the table and sliding them around with no pushing animations.....that ridiculous.

I put about 10 hours in, starting with goalies at 36 (sliders down at first too) at all attributes and play free skate and play now games to see how things change. I'm a bit discouraged though.

Seems no matter what the goalie rating is they are the same. I'm not finished but I feared going into this that the attributes weren't going to be as responsive. More as the beers flow and I get a bit of fire.

If you check out my sig I have a bunch of videos of the 2k10 goalies as I worked on them as well as the global edits I did that Mkharsh33 included in his MLB 2k12 updates. Hoping I can contribute to the EA guys too

I applaud your efforts as this is an area of the game that is in much need of attention. However, I must ask, why wouldn't you wait for NHL 15 to drop in about a month before really undertaking such a daunting task?

Great question. Did the same thing with 2k10......guess I'm just late to the party.

Also, there will be some that stick with 14 I'm sure, at least for a while. I'm not getting 15 until I go next gen and I'm thinking 15 on 360 will be similar to 14.

So why not tinker with it now to try to extend the life of the game, like we did with 2k10.

If you can somehow make this work, this would be a game saver. The goalies ALL play the same which is so frustrating. As you mentioned too, they go down way too early and play completely unrealistic. EA really sped up the animations to prevent cross-crease one timers from going in. You can see it in the replays.

Please keep us posted and I'm rooting for you to somehow get the goalies to play better!

Cool, 15 is likely to be similar, just didn't want you pouring all your time into this if you were getting 15 next month.

I wish you well! Maybe in a year or two you can let us know what you're doing behind the scenes... From Vancouver.

Re: Playing with Goalie Attributes EA Style

I know it isn't the top corner shots yet but I am trying hard to get them to only move (mostly anyway since it will be impossibe to totally fix with attributes) when they push, no more magnet butterfly sliding into positions to keep the puck on their logo on their chest, that is why they seem to slide.

Here is the type of movement I'm looking for. Just two good saves here, shuts the 5 hole, notice, late too and then recovers with a double push and fans that far pad out.

That movement is very much under control and looks pretty good. No crazy sliding "spiderman saves". Just a nice double push recovery taking away the low part of the ice, text book.

More as it develops and beers disappear
