Different people will tell you different things. I wouldn't say it's unacceptable but personally i do find it to be a cheap way to play if it's for more than 70% of the game (online play), the cpu defending is overpowering. The only time i use off ball is to close down open men on the perimeter.

Off-ball is acceptable whenever, play the game the way you want too and forget what everybody else says.

Me personally I play on-ball the entire game but whatever, play the way that your comfortable playing.

        Re: When is offball acceptable?

Before i give my acceptable scenarios i want to be clear what kind of off ball i'm talking about. To me off ball is guarding a cpu player. What most people do however is the lowest of the low, namely going in a zone and turboing around pressing square hoping to intercept passes. It's pathetic really and it makes my skin crawl.

So off ball to me is only acceptable against these types of cheesers:

        - when they just keep going side to side for 10-15 seconds on the 3 point line until the lag or some dumb animation finally throws you out of position.

        - when they just keep driving inside to draw your center (who ALWAYS gets sucked in even though you use settings like never double team and no help defense) and drop off the pass to their center for a wide open dunk.

        - to defend the pick and roll, pretty much same as above.

        - against turbo lebron/jordan/wilkins/... cheesers to try and draw charges.

If your opponent is abusing something like that it's acceptable. If you play off ball against a legit player you need to face facts and admit you just suck.

I play on ball WHILE using inferior lineups about 95% of the time, 5% are those 3 situations. And i'll tell you why i believe everyone should play on ball. It's simple really. If i wanted to play the cpu i'd stay offline, the whole point of going online is to play another human (on both offense and defense)... Common sense? Anyone?
