Basic Basketball Tips to Help with 2K?

I've never played organized basketball and I only recently started watching basketball games a few years ago so I have no basic idea of how basketball is supposed to work. Mostly, I have no idea about player/ball movement and how players are supposed to move around the court to get open. Even when I play pick up games, I don't know what I'm doing. I just run around.

So what are some basic tips that can help me out? Or maybe just basic 2K tips that could help me out?

For instance, a basic tip I would give for NCAA Football is that if there are less than 5 defenders in the tackle box, audible to a run play (unless you absolutely need to pass the ball).

Pick and roll. Screens. Backdoor cuts. Touch pass (essentially receiving and immediately passing). Know what you're gonna do with the ball before you receive it--at least have an idea.

Dont try to FORCE your way Inside. Makes passes to open man. If you drive lane and get cut off pass it to open man. Learn the Strengths and Weaknesses of the Players on your team. You dont want Horrible 3pt Shooters taking alot of 3s. It will be ALOT of Trial and Error for 1st 10 games or so.

The "Game within the Game" is to create an open shot for yourself OR your teammate! Uncontested shots have a greater potential of going in. Not just in video games, but also in real life.
When you watch a game and you see 3 guys standing at the 3point line and they pump fake pass, then the team member they passed it to, passes it right back and suddenly the guy is WIDE OPEN and drains the 3?
Thats how basketball is supposed to be played, creating OPEN shots.
Just a very basic little tip for you to keep in the back of your mind as you play.
        Have fun and good luck!

it depend on the defense ! vs man on man find good matchup , then the D gonna help and then you gonna find Open shots by passing !
vs zone attack between 2 players (not on one player ) and help will come and then someone on your team will be left open .
and be creative ! dont do the same attack again and again , try in the paint , then 2pts shot, then 3 pts .
when you play online its often dunk or 3pts, you must searching for open 2pts shots !!

this is a good tip. Every possession in basketball essentially boils down to this. Get an open or high percentage shot for you or a teammate.

Like others have said get high percentage shots. Usually trying to score closer to the basket leads to high percentage shots but not if you force it. Drawing fouls is very good(not in a pickup game with no free throws). Keep the ball moving and always try to make the right play. Running play can help you understand the movement better. You can set plays to auto under coach settings. Also, the quick plays(right on d pad) are basic plays every team uses and every team utilizes the pick and roll(B on Xbox, Circle on PS3).

The 3 biggest problems I see against users on offense is they overdribble, shoot too many contested threes, and have tunnel vision(no court vision, I'll leave a shooter on the opposite side wide open and they never notice)

Defensively, don't spam the steal and block buttons, stay in front of the ball, and be ready to bring help defenders if you get beat. In real ball when guarding the ball watch the players waist and always keep the appropriate amount of space between so he doesn't have a clean shot but can't blow by you. When not guarding the ball always see your man and the ball simulataneously and be prepared to help. You have no idea how many times I've scored because others players watch the ball and I drift away or cut back door.

YouTube videos can give you more instruction.

Recognize the positioning of not only yourself, but also everyone else on the court. Let's say you are on a corner baseline. If you see a teammate and his defender near you on that baseline, run along the base line to force your defender to follow you through those two, who will act as a screen against your defender. This will work only if you have an open space on the other side of the floor or if you can navigate to an open space after crossing the court. You have to practice this and get a feel of how it works in order to better execute it.
