    2014 Draft Discussion

With all the talks about tanking for this years class. I'm surprise we haven't started a thread about them yet. I know it's early. But tonight we get see some of the best players on the best teams go at it. The top 3 players are playing tonight. Parker,Wiggins and Randle. Every NBA scout will out there tonight.

I really like Parker game though.

Besides those two guys, Dante Exum and Julius Randle could be starting on teams right now...

I'm not completely sold on Andrew Wiggins yet. He could be the next Gerald Green. But I haven't seen any type of different skills from him. I think that's my problem.

I like Dante Exum as well.

Andrew Wiggins depending on the organization he goes too will blossom. He's strong and an aggressive slasher. His jump shot is wonky but will improve. He's nothing like Gerald Green, he's a really smart player. His biggest knock was he was so much more supremely talented than those he played against in high school he cruised. He looks like he's now ready to play at the level he has shown which at times looked downright dominant.

RedSceptile.... I'm ready for him to shut me up. I'm just saying from the body of work I've seen. I never like the guy who coasted through games. Reminds me of the Kansas guard from last year.....Ben McLemore... But we will see.

This is exactly what I was telling a friend I thought about him the other day.. He had all the tools and athletic ability to be a great great player... But the guys he's getting compared to, guys like Kobe and LeBron, I don't see near the skill-set from him I saw from those guys. Or even T-Mac and KG for that matter..

I'm not saying he can't develop them, and I hope he does because I'm all about more talent in the league.. But as of right now what is there to show he'll be LeBron James rather than Gerald Green???

Hopefully going to a school with a coach known to mold his players, rather than a one and done school, will help him become a better player than what I am currently predicting.. He has a whole college season to change my mind..

From what I've saw from Parker and Randle they look like they will be really good players... I really really like Parker's game.

Sucks that I'll be stuck at work tonight.

I see what you mean jeebs. Personally I wish there would be more prospects with that kill or be killed mentality (and who explicitly express it). That's what made past eras so memorable and captivating IMO. There's plenty of talent today and I do realize that not everyone is going to be KG, Mailman, Shaq, Barkley type intensity/passion but it seems like in general, today's basketball player is somewhat reigned in. Not saying that's a bad thing at all, guys like Lilliard, Davis, Barnes etc. etc. all seem very classy and respectful, but I wouldn't mind seeing just straight up I will dunk you through the basket or I will rip your heart out type guys coming up as well.

I wouldn't mind having that variety of quiet killer (Duncan) with outwardly heartless. Wiggins and Parker fit into the quiet variety... at least from what I've seen.

Seriously doubt Wiggins will fall that far down even if he is a bust. Wing players normally get the benefit of the doubt because wings are less likely to bust than say a big. Bigs are the ones who bust the hardest.

In a worst case scenario, Wiggins will turn out to be Gerald Wallace. This kid is too talented to fall into the ranks of Gerald Green. Gerald Green can barley stay in the league and he has no off court or personality issues. He's a good kid but just isn't that talented.

                  Re: 2014 Draft Class

I'm excited as hell for college basketball, even moreso than usual. Tweaked rules, more offense, great freshman class. Should be as entertaining as 2007-2008 was when we had:

                  - Michael Beasley
                  - Eric Gordon
                  - Derrick Rose
                  - OJ Mayo
                  - Kevin Love
                  - James Harden
                  - JJ Hickson
                  - Blake Griffin

There were freshman tearing it up everywhere. Plus several other future pros that didn't have great freshman seasons (DeAndre Jordan, Chandler Parsons, Anthony Randolph, Jerryd Bayless, etc). That HS class was SO deep.

Everything I've read about Wiggins since he got to KU is that the hype is a little overblown. He's not there yet. I think he'll kind of be like Harrison Barnes during his UNC tenure. You'll be able to see that all the pieces are there but haven't quite come together yet.

I expect Randle and Parker to go back and forth all year in terms of which freshman is having the best season. Not saying they'll be better than Wiggins long term but right now I think that's a fairly safe assumption (of course I say this without having seen any of the three in a collegiate game yet so in about 7 hours I might look like a total idiot).

Looking forward to seeing UK of course, always interesting to see which one of their highly touted freshman is the truth and which is really overrated (not hating, but there's almost always one). Really looking forward to seeing if the Harrison twins are the real deal or not.

For any non-college fans, jeebs mentioned it in the OP but tonight there are two big games tonight at the United Center. If you only watch one night of college hoops all season long this is probably the one.

                  #1 Kentucky vs #2 Michigan State (7pm)
                  #4 Duke vs #5 Kansas (9:30pm)

These games feature 8 of the Top 12 freshman in the country (the only really hyped kid missing is Aaron Gordon of Arizona).

                  Kentucky
                  #2 Julius Randle
                  #5 Andrew Harrison
                  #7 Aaron Harrison
                  #9 Dakari Johnson
                  #11 James Young

                  Kansas
                  #1 Andrew Wiggins
                  #12 Wayne Selden

                  Duke
                  #4 Jabari Parker

                    Right now I'd say:
                    Parker
                    Randle
                    Exum

                    Are top 3

I need Wiggins to get 15 ppg 5 reb 5 assists for the year or develop a solid perimeter shot.

I need Smart to learn how to shoot the ball, or he's going to be similar to Kid-Gilchrist, amazing all arounder who can't shoot.

Need Gordon to develop a decent mid range jumper and/or perimeter shot and if he does top 3 otherwise could slide to 7/8/9 on my board.

Otherwise I think Gary Harris and Chris Walker jump into the top 10 by season's end. I'd also give a chance for Walker to be top 5 as well due to rivaling Wiggins as the best athlete. If he gets cleared to play next month I think he dominates, then adds 15 pounds in the offseason.

                      Re: 2014 Draft Class

Julius Randle is reminding me of Cousins for some reason. The way he handles the ball, his penchant for dribbling up the court after securing a rebound, the way he keeps getting rebounds...and just overall looking more NBA ready in terms of his body than everyone else out there. He really just looks like an overgrown Small Forward playing PF

I think people are sleeping on Wayne Selden. I can see a lot of Evan Turner in him. It might take him a while to reach his full potential, but the amount of talent he has is undeniable. Wouldn't surprise me if he ends up like a mini Jamaal Franklin for Kansas this season. He fills up the stat sheet, that's for sure.

Yeah, Smart really needs that shot to develop. He is not the athlete Baron Davis or Wall are, so I don't think he can get away with not having a 3 point shot at the NBA level. Especially with how shaky his handles actually are.

I think Gordon has a pretty good form (IE it works for him) so I can see him developing that mid range jumper. Walker looks like the second coming of Amare so I agree with you there.

No, the Bulls do not need another Hinrich. Take off them homer glasses (I kid I kid ).

Edit: I think peeps are also sleeping on Kasey Hill. That man can play. He's going to end up first PG taken (Is Exum a PG? If he is then 2nd PG taken) in the draft. He's that good.
