My Bend But Don't Break D

I keep my base (3-4/4-3) on the field against 3 WR or less

I match the over the top coverage to the number of WRs (3 WR then cover 3)

4 WR then I bring out Nickel maintaining the coverage matching the number of WRs

5 WR I bring out Dime

Gives you more bodies in the box to stop the run and more short coverage guys underneath

In my last dynasty game (coach mode) with my Georgia State (rated all 60s) hosting WKU (all 75s) we racked up 8 coverage sacks because the QB had nowhere to go with the ball. Held them to under 200 yards of offense in a 13-10 "upset" as time expired.

No cheesy shifting, audibles or blitzing just covering more of the field.

Occasionally, if facing a scrambling QB, I'll audible a short zone to a spy.

Very similar to what I do. Most, if not all, of my sacks have come as a result of solid coverage.

Those coverage sacks went a loooong way toward getting that win 13-10 on a FG as time expired

I'm curious to see how this would work online. Most players know what routes beat cover 3 and cover 4 but the lack of an actual pass rush in this game a QB player could still make those passes.

You might be right. This is what I use against the cpu as I'm an offline dynasty player exclusively. Not sure how it works against another user.

You have any online defensive strategies?

              Yeah because online...

Against a human online would just wait for receivers to break across the middle wide open, or run with the Qb, with only with only 3 men down the Qb will have plenty of time in the pocket.

4 WR then I bring out Nickel maintaining the coverage matching the number of WRs
Again against a human would just wait for receivers to break over the middle or TE or receiver would break wide open on a out route or sideline post.

5 WR I bring out Dime
The normal Dime is one of the worst defenses in the game, receivers run open all day on that D especially in the middle of it. Again a human online opponent would shred it.

Gives you more bodies in the box to stop the run and more short coverage guys underneath
The middle inside post is wide open on this defense.

I've got nothing for online games. Guess I'm one of the dying breed that still plays hermit ball. LOL

I don't play online a lot but in the little that I have what I've realized that the roughly 80% of the time, you're going to see your opponents money plays in the first quarter, then you just have to adjust to stop/slow it down.

Most people will get frustrated if they have to put a drive together.

The last game I played, the guy exclusively ran the read option and HB screen so I set my defense to chase the HB on the read option, went cover 2, audibled by DLine to contain and controlled the safety to the HB side so I could crash down on the option play and hold the QB to a few yard gain.

There's no one magic formula for defense. You have to observe and adjust.

What difficulty are you using? Are you using any custom sliders in your dynasty?

I'm playing on default All-American/All-American. Again, I play coach mode so it's not me making the plays but having the way I call my plays put my guys in the position to make the plays.

Do you play mostly man or zone defense? I assume you play man since zone defense seems broken again.

It depends. Most times if I'm facing 3 WRs or more I'm in straight zone or zone blitzing. I typically run man against 2 WRs or less.

So do you think that zone defense works fine this year?

I've got no complaints with what I've seen thus far. At first I was miffed but now that I've switched up my play calling the pass defense and defense in general seems much more reasonable. Maybe we just need to change the way we've always done it to doing it a different way. Not sure...
