MS launches Outlook.com consumer email service (replacement for Hotmail)

OS, get your professional-sounding addresses while you can. The service is still in its preview phase but you can now register an account.

I signed up with my firstname.lastname@outlook.com address. The GUI is soooo much better than GMail, not that that's saying much. I even like it more than Exchange 2010's OWA. Outlook.com uses ActiveSync as well so it'll be a beast for mobile devices.

@outlook.com addresses will become very popular in the future so if you're stuck with a messy GMail name then here's a great chance to pick up a new address.

I like it, just too deep in Google's services to make it worth uprooting.

The impending end to iGoogle has me poking around for alternatives though.

Signed up for future use, potentially.

Went with the professional sounding address, just as you did.

      Thanks for this.

IMO migrating away from gmail is a pretty easy task.

Thanks for the heads up. I like Gmail, but registered an Outlook email address just in case.

I use Gmail as well but registered with Outlook. Did the full name @ but no . in between. Just don't like having a period in the address.

I'm definitely not a fan of gmail so I registered my name. Will probably use this email going forward. Good looking out!

I like Google, but the first thing I noticed with outlook is how much more clean its appearance is over Google. Google to me has an issue with putting things out there and it appearing like they never touch it again. That's how I feel about Gmail. It just doesn't flow well. Outlook really seems to bring it home on the clarity and ease of use.

Maybe, but you won't get the domain name of outlook.com.

It's clean but at what cost? I can see more messages on the screen with gmail, despite any ads and chat.

I really like the change, but just don't see a reason to switch.

I am looking forward to what the ecosystem looks like once 8 rolls out and have already upgraded my main PC at home, but I haven't changed my email in several years... and that was moving from my hotmail that I still have and just collects spam. Now I have several mailboxes streaming into my gmail account, all sorting nicely into appropriate tags, allowing for me to have 11k unread without losing my mind.

Outlook just looks like Gmail with some elements hidden and a blue bar across the top and the spacing sent to cozy.

Thanks for the heads up. Went ahead and made three with my name because I couldn't decide if I wanted first/last, first/last with period, or just first/last initial.
