    Mozilla meets Madden

Last night as I was trying to sleep, I was thinking about how much better can Madden be. Many of us mourn the loss of the 2K franchise and complain about the lack of competition. In years past, fans could modify the game (such as in Madden 08 PC) and I missed that. So I was wondering how the fan community can bring back the features that we loved, and create features that we wish for. Since we can't modify Madden 12 like we did in Madden 08 (and I doubt EA would allow developers to change and add to their game - and for good reason), I have concluded that the football simulation gaming community has to work together to create the game they want.

Instead of creating wishlists and complaints, write code!

I propose that football simulation and Madden fans create an open-source game in the spirit of the Mozilla development community that is customizable, accessible, sophisticated, and most importantly - fun!

In order to achieve this manumental task, we first have to discuss what organizational and development tools are needed to create an open-source football game. What game development software do we need? How should we communicate and share our developments? Should it be created for the Xbox 360 and/or for the PC?

Feel free to add any questions.

Edit: the goal isn't to really compete with Madden 13. The goal is to make a football game that we can control and improve, and bring back features that aren't in Madden 13.

Edit x2: Mozilla is an open-source browser. Concentrate on the "open-source", not the browser.

If you think an open source game will be better than 13, well man, you have a lot more to read up on video games and how they are made.

      oh dear lord.......

As much as it might sound like a cool idea at first, I'm sure once you get started on trying to create your own game you will see how hard it really is to make a football game that plays and looks as good as Madden 13 or NFL 2k5. You'll be lucky if you can make a game that plays like madden 06!

Mozilla has nothing to do with video games. It's just another browser.

If you think a modded 2K8 wouldn't gently queef in M13's face, you have a lot more football to watch and how they are made.

I didn't realize that 2K8 was an open source game. OH WAIT

Yeah, barring not only a release of APF2K8's source code but also the XBOX Developer's Kit, a full-blown mod to 2K Sports football simply is not happening. That wasn't what was proposed, however.

I think making an open-source football game would be fun for those involved. It'd be a hell of an effort to put anything reasonable together, however.

Did anything ever come of all that pomp and circumstance he was touting? I don't recall seeing anything substantial ever come out from that project which may or may not have existed.

Nope. Probably turned out to be much more difficult than he thought, and he gave up.

It sounds like a cool idea and I'd try it out provided that there would be some way to play Canadian rules, arena rules, and American rules all three.
