How to bulk up as a skinny guy

As the title says, I was wondering if there are any methods you guys recommend for bulking up.

I'm only 16, and a junior in highschool. I'm also very tall. But it is tough to add weight.

2 weeks ago I started lifting (3 days a week), and I try to drink a 30g protein drink with all 3 meals of the day.

Just wondering if any of you guys have any tips for adding muscle.

Just make sure you go to the gym and do what you are supposed to do in the gym and eat. I think when you get too complicated you end up leaving working out behind. I gained 20 lbs of muscle (...and some fat..) during the summer. I was 17 though I have a good body for weight lifting because I am somewhat short and can gain weight at a good rate. But I went from a skinny track kid to ripped. Good luck.

If you are really having trouble then it would probably be best to start getting into the complicated zone because you would be more likely to stop going if you weren't seeing results imo.

But continue to have the protein. If you are going to have it 3x a day...have whey before and after and casein protein at night. I'd also find a good, easy to follow routine for the gym.

Thanks. I think part of my issue is I just go to the gym and do random things instead of having a set routine.

Best thing you can do is focus on the big three! Bench, squat and deadlift...don't get fancy with too many isolation movements. U can start pyramiding the weight...say your Max bench is 405... start with a few warmup sets then work in Assyrian of 10,8,6,4 and 2 reps...focus on those reps with the big three. Also focus your workouts around the big three. Bench days could be focused on chest, shoulder and tri's
              Squat days would be legs
Deadlift days would be back and bi's
Doing this workout I was benching 360 at 170 pounds and deadlifting 425
You arecypung so eat...eat protein with carbs...protein shakes r good but eat carbs with it!
drink half your body weight in water ...you weigh 160 drink 80 ounces of water ...
              Good luck!

dang, i was gonna say, "get married and have a kid" (went from 130 to 205 in about a year) but that's the wrong kind of bulk and not the best advice for a 16 year old.

Re: How to bulk up as a skinny guy

I've put on a solid 10 pounds in the last 5-6 months, but I also think I burned off some fat and put on more than 10lbs of muscle in that span. I made sure to eat as much as I could, while keeping it healthy meals, and I made sure to focus on certain parts every time I worked out. One day I do chest, then back, then legs, etc. Don't go in without a plan on what to attack.

I'm only 5'9'' 165lbs, but my bench is about 230, my squat is 280-290 range(haven't maxed it in awhile). My maxes are not monster numbers or anything, but I feel for my size and age(17) they're pretty decent and I am happy with them, but am looking to keep improving them. Just don't overwork yourself, but do push yourself. You want to make yourself get sore, but you don't want to go too far to where the soreness is ridiculous and sets you back a few days(which I have done a few times).

I'm not going to sit here and try and tell you tips like I know everything because I really don't know much. But I just wanted to let you know what I did and the gains I saw.

Also, I do not take any protein, creatine, etc. No supplements for me. My buddy does, though, and he has seen some huge gains in the last year. He went from being a scrawny kid literally benching maybe 115 last winter to now being 6'0'' 180lbs and benching 250-260.

Eat, eat, eat. Lifting weights will definitely help, but it will only take you so far if you don't eat enough.

Are you in athletics? Surely you have a coach that could get you on a bulk up plan.

Yeah, I'm on our rowing team.

And we compete nationally. Freshman year, I was on our freshman A boat that got third at nationals. Last year I was on the 2nd varsity as a sophomore. And this year for the fall season (in rowing it's fall and spring season) I was on the top varsity boat and we got 7th at head of the Charles (which is the biggest regatta in the world, and we were the fastest public school in the youth event)

It's just that I am easily the skinniest kid on my boat, but I manage to be just as strong as must of them. So if I add muscle I think I could be very strong. And It would help getting recruited to college

Yeah, I'd work with your coach (and possibly weight trainer if the school has one...usually there's a football coach or someone who's also great with lifting) to come up with something good for you.

I'm surprised your coach hasn't done anything for you all ready. I ran track and cross country in HS and my coach had us in the weight room regularly and if I'd been into it I could have gotten hardcore.
