Multiple Sources Claim New Nintendo Console Reveal At or Before E3

Rumors of a "Wii 2" or "Wii HD" have been flying since ... well, pretty much since the Wii launched, but when an outlet the size of Game Informer piles on, it's tough not to take notice.

The publication says it's hearing from multiple sources that Nintendo will announce a new home console at or before E3. According to hearsay, the console would arrive in 2012 and would sport HD graphics, though GI's sources are conflicted about how said graphics would compare to the Xbox 360 and PS3.

Update: IGN found some anonymous sources of its own, who claim that the new console will be backwards compatible with all Wii games. Its sources say that the console is "significantly more powerful than the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360."

Re: New Nintendo Console in 2012?

Wii emulation on the PC has already been upscaling the console's games to HD, so they can presumably easily be able to do that for BC if the console is good enough.

Nintendo will have to bring it though, as just being on par with the 360/ps3 does nothing for them at this point. They need to wow and bring in western 3rd parties, which is exactly what MS did with their one year lead over everyone. They went out of their way to form or buy relationships that put the 360 where it is today over the other two far more established companies.

More importantly, Nintendo needs a rapid and sweeping change to their entire online philosophy to win over more serious gamers.

I take it will be Wii 1.5

I doubt Sony and Microsoft will launch a new system anytime soon. They all about add ons now via the Kinect and Move.

It won't matter how powerful their console will be if:

          A) They don't take advantage of it (Gamecube)

          B) They tailor toward family gaming like they are now.

          C) Not a lot of decent 3rd party titles.

IMO they shot themselves in the foot because since they cater towards family and kid gaming there won't be as many parents shelling out money for this console like a hardcore gamer would for a PS4 or an XBOX 720.

I would be all over a Mario or Zelda game with graphics comparable to the PS3/360...

it depends on how powerful the console is. MS and Sony can't afford to sit around for long with a competently powered nintendo console on the market. We probably hear about new MS and Sony consoles at E3 in 2012 to help take some steam away from the nintendo console release later that year. A 2013 release for MS and Sony is still two years from now, and only gives Nintendo a year head start.

Nintendo can keep their new system.......they don't do anything for me from a gaming standpoint anymore.

They've long lost me as a customer.

Feel bad for anyone owning a Wii right now though, that system effectively is now deceased.

Yeah, I'd really have to think super hard about another Nintendo console.

3DS isn't impressing me at all, Wii had 99% crap games and not really even that many of the awesome 1st party games (no Zelda for how long?). How long ago was the last "must have" Wii game released? I can't even think of one lol.

Nintendo has to win back a lot of gamers, though I'm sure the casual group will eat up whatever they sell.

If it's 100% motion-controlled again (and by 100% I mean like the Wii) I'll have no interest.

I play video games so I can sit on my *** and press buttons on a controller. If I wanted to move around, I'd go play sports.

Give me a controller, and a focus on games like the 64 had instead of a focus on kids, and I'd look at it.

Next 6-8 months still look pretty good for games, but yeah after that it might get a little dicey -- tends to happen with most platforms after the next thing is announced.

DS suckeddddd at first as well, so I will reserve judgment on the 3DS. The 3-D does nothing for me regardless, but the added graphics and online stuff still has me hoping for better times once fall rolls around.

I actually thought there were some pretty good times to be had on the Wii. Certainly not the same amount of games as PS3/360 but I'm not mad I bought one.

                          CVG: New Controller

What's most exciting about the Wii successor however is its all-new controller, which industry sources have indicated is not simply an upgraded Wii Remote, and will even feature a built-in HD screen.

Our sources did not specify whether or not the controller displays will feature any other functionality, such as that of the DS's touch screen, but it's easy to imagine the sort of innovation an extra screen could bring to Wii 2 games.

"Nintendo's plans sound unreal," one source said. "Publishers are already planning launch titles and it's all very exciting.

"The hardware is even more powerful than current HD consoles and backwards compatible with Wii. The controller will be all-new and has a HD screen on it."

We're told Nintendo plans to launch the Wii successor in late 2012, which lines up with earlier reports from other games media.

They're gonna have to blow me away to buy another of their consoles. I have a Wii now and the games suck. All I play is MLB Power Pro 2008. I expect the next PS3/Xbox to blow away the graphics we see now, because there are gaming PCs that can. If Nintendo isn't up there with them, I'm out.
