I bought my first pair of skates

I started playing NHL 22 on Game Pass and I have become attached to the sport.

I just ordered my first pair of hockey skates and am going to learn to play hockey.

I am going to get involved with some of the beginner leagues here in Florida.

But first I need to learn how to skate. I was advised by someone to learn in hockey skates.

I briefly had on someone elses skates to try them on and I couldn't stand up in them. But that was just for a couple of minutes but I will be getting my own so I can learn.

It doesn't snow here in Florida so I gotta learn INSIDE one of the local links here in Florida.

Anyone have any advice on things I should do? I am a complete NOVICE to ice skating.

Another EA SPORTS accomplishment. Lol .

Greetings from the UK.
I started skating at 6---Im 54 now....lol..."getting the hang of it..." lol
First things first....
Can you tag along with another Skater---having someone with you makes so much difference.

Try and get your own skates--sometimes other peoples are contoured (through use) to their own feet. Your own skates you will soon get familiar (DONT OVER PAY AND BUY THE MOST EXPENSIVE SKATES THOUGH)

Use the boards at first until your feet (and brain) become accustomed---the floor will feel like its moving under your feet at first--lock your legs, dig in a little.

DONT LEAN BACK--ALWAYS SLIGHTLY FORWARD (I used to say to my kids "lean forward as you were going to do a rasping comedy fart--knees slightly bent, ar$e out)

You will fall over, its part of the experience--laugh at yourself---pick yourself up, and repeat.

ABOVE ALL---HAVE FUN....its bloody awesome.....and within 2 sessions, you will able to get around away from the boards....

DONT FORGET--BEND KNEES, BUTT OUT---(never lean back, and NEVER have your hands in your pockets)

All the best
Johnny

Awesome Coach ! My only suggestion, take it slowly and don’t give up, it’s not easy but so worth it.

As a Canadian, we were kind of born with skates on, but I can only imagine if I would have to learn today, lol !

Good luck 🤞

PK,

WE all know Canadians come out of the womb with skates on!!!

As an upstate NYer I can tell you I did too... Started skating at 5 and have never stopped.. There are 2 sounds I Love to hear

1. My kids laughing and 2 the CRUNCH of ice shredding below a good skater. IYKYK!!!

El Presidente!

Thanks for the advice. When I do get a new pair I am definitely taking your advice and not breaking the bank.

My first task is to learn how to stand up in the skates.

Thanks PK

The last time it snowed in Jacksonville Florida was 1989.
Ice skating is not really a part of the culture here.

In recent years it has been growing. They just remodeled a multi dollar rink here and hockey is starting to grow.

It is not a exaggeration at all to say 90% of all people born and raised in Jacksonville have never ice skated. In fact it is probably more.

Re: I bought my first pair of skates

I am the proud possessor of a pair of Bauer One.4 hockey skates.

At first they hurt like hell when I had them on!
I was like how in the hell can I wear these.

THE MORE I WEAR THEM THE EASIER IT GETS!!!

STANDING UP IN THEM WAS NO PROBLEM!! I couldn't stand up in the cheap azz skates I had on before. These were easy to walk around in.

I know a lot of you guys are from Canada and have been skating since birth. Not me coming from Florida.

This is the first I have ever done anything like this.

Next Sunday is going to be the big day when I hit the ice.

Anyone have any advice on how to soften up the inside of them just a little bit?

Re: I bought my first pair of skates

Coming from a hockey player and from a skating coaches' husband. Go to a learn to skate session at your local rink. Shes taught many hockey players to skate in a learn to skate setting. Bake the skates and make sure they are sharpened.
