A New Dawn in Chapel Hill: Tar Heels' Rollercoaster 2023 Season Under Coach Pitts

The 2023 season brought fresh air to Chapel Hill as the UNC Tar Heels embarked on a new journey under the leadership of first-year head coach Bernard Pitts. Known for his defensive genius at the University of Florida, where his units ranked in the top three nationally for four consecutive seasons, Pitts arrived with high expectations. He brought along a talented coaching staff, including LSU’s former quarterback coach and passing game coordinator, Landon Hale, as offensive coordinator and his trusted linebacker coach, Phoenix Thomas, as defensive coordinator.

The Tar Heels' season was a rollercoaster, ending with a respectable 7-6 record. They pulled off stunning upsets against #14 Virginia Tech and #19 NC State and triumphed over their arch-rival Duke with a nail-biting 20-17 victory. The pinnacle of their season came with a thrilling 27-24 win over UCLA in the Military Bowl, a victory that ensured they finished above .500 and set the tone for the future.

Defensively, the Tar Heels were formidable, boasting the 25th-best defense in the country, allowing just 22 points per game. This stout defense was anchored by a ferocious defensive line featuring sophomore Stanley Johnson, junior Zach Collier, and senior Larry Crowder. Their dominance on the line of scrimmage disrupted offenses and provided a bright spot in an otherwise tumultuous season.

Offensively, the Tar Heels struggled mightily, ranking a dismal 121st nationally. The root of their woes was a quarterback controversy that saw three different starters throughout the season. Senior Alexis Keith began the season under center but was benched after a disappointing loss to Utah. Junior Garrett Browning took over but was benched after a poor showing against Boston College. The offense finally found some stability with true sophomore Branden Barnett, who led the team to a 3-0 finish, including the bowl victory. Barnett's impressive performance (753 yards, 4 TDs, 2 INTs, 66.3% completion) provided hope for the future.

Redshirt senior Curtis Tillery led the rushing attack on the ground with 847 yards and 7 touchdowns, proving a reliable workhorse. The receiving corps, however, struggled to find consistency, partly due to the quarterback carousel.

          Offseason Upheaval and Rebuilding

The offseason was a period of significant change for the Tar Heels. Junior quarterback Garrett Browning entered the transfer portal, leaving Barnett and Danny Strickland as the only quarterbacks on the roster. However, Coach Pitts made a massive splash by securing a commitment from 5-star quarterback Rylan Clark, the #4 QB in the country and #27 recruit overall. Clark's arrival injected excitement and optimism into the program, as he is expected to compete for the starting job immediately.

The running back room also saw departures, with Quinn Vinson and Varne Tatum transferring out. The defense suffered a major blow when standout defensive lineman Stanley Johnson declared for the NFL draft and was selected in the 2nd round by the Cincinnati Bengals. His departure leaves a significant void on the defensive line, but Pitts has shown he can find and develop defensive talent.

Determined to strengthen the roster, Pitts aggressively attacked the transfer portal. He landed 5-star freshman linebacker Shawn Billups from Alabama, 4-star linebacker Trace Pollard from Kansas State, and 3-star wide receiver John Kauffman from Temple. These additions and a strong recruiting class ranked 42nd by 247Sports provided a solid foundation for the future.

Notable recruits include four-star safety Marlon Griffin, four-star cornerback Zander Jefferson, four-star safety Rashaad Murphy, and four-star wide receiver Elias Smith. The influx of young talent and experienced transfers positions the Tar Heels well for the upcoming season.

          Anticipating 2024: The Road Ahead

As the Tar Heels prepare for the 2024 season, the focus is on building on their defensive success and improving the offense. Despite the loss of Stanley Johnson, the defense is expected to remain strong under Pitts' guidance. Redshirt senior Giovanni Herbert was enthusiastic, stating, "The commitment to our game plan has been incredible. We're ready to take it to the next level."

The quarterback battle between true freshman Rylan Clark and incumbent Branden Barnett has been a focal point of spring practices, splitting reps and pushing each other to improve. Danny Strickland appears out of the running for the starting job, but his presence provides valuable depth.

The offense will look to key players such as redshirt junior tight end Isaias Traylor, freshman wide receiver Elias Smith, senior wide receiver Eddie Potts, and senior running back Micah Britt II to step up and provide the firepower needed to complement the stout defense. The development of these players will be crucial to the team's success.

The 2024 schedule presents several key matchups, including a week 5 showdown against Coach Pitts' former team, Florida. This game will be a litmus test for the Tar Heels and could serve as a statement game for Pitts' tenure. A late-season matchup with Florida State looms large, with significant implications for the ACC standings.

As the Tar Heels embark on the 2024 season, the combination of new talent, experienced players, and the strategic acumen of Coach Bernard Pitts sets the stage for a potentially breakthrough year. The journey to reclaiming ACC glory is underway, and the excitement in Chapel Hill is palpable. The future is bright, and the Tar Heels are ready to rise.

            Tar Heel Roster Breakdown
As the UNC Tar Heels gear up for the 2024 season, anticipation is high in Chapel Hill. With a mix of seasoned veterans and promising newcomers, the team looks ready to build on last season's successes and tackle new challenges. Here’s an in-depth look at the Tar Heels' roster and the key players to watch.

            Quarterbacks
RS So Branden Barnett, Fr Rylan Clark, RS So Danny Strickland

The quarterback competition has been one of the most talked-about storylines of the offseason. Branden Barnett and freshman Rylan Clark have been neck-and-neck, neither pulling ahead as the clear starter. Barnett, who maintained his redshirt last season and played in only three games, has shown promise but faces stiff competition from the highly-touted Clark. Unfortunately for Danny Strickland, he seems to be the odd man out in this battle.

            Running Backs
Sr Micah Britt II, Sr Mason Scott, Fr Umberto Allen, Jr Jerry Bethea, RS Fr Fabian Hampton, Fr Frank Lim

Micah Britt II is expected to be the workhorse in the backfield, coming off a solid 2023 season where he rushed for 532 yards and 4 touchdowns. Senior Mason Scott, known for his skills in the passing game, will be challenged by freshman Umberto Allen for secondary carries. With depth and competition, this group aims to provide a balanced attack.

            Wide Receivers
Fr Elias Smith, Sr Eddie Potts, RS So John Kauffman, Jr Dominik Battle, RS Jr Warren Fitzgerald, RS Fr Theodore Gilmore, RS So Ryan Carlton, RS Fr Colten Dwyer, Fr Charles Chambers, RS Fr Edgar Shorter, Fr Maverick Bauer

True freshman Elias Smith is generating a lot of buzz as he steps into the role of the number one target. Transfer receivers John Kauffman from Temple and Dominik Battle from East Mississippi CC via Texas A&M bring excitement and depth to the receiving corps. Senior Eddie Potts will provide veteran leadership and experience.

            Tight Ends
RS Jr Isaias Traylor, RS Sr Louis Qualls, Fr William Riggins, Fr Dylan Emerson, TE Raymond Wilson, RS Fr Richard Holland

Preseason All-American Isaias Traylor headlines the tight end group. Traylor, who briefly entered the transfer portal before being convinced to stay by Coach Pitts, is an elite blocker and pass-catcher. Team captain Louis Qualls adds leadership and experience, making this unit a reliable offense component.

            Offensive Line
Sr Tony Calvin, Fr Camden Mendoza, RS Jr Noah Moorer, RS Bryson Courtney, RS Fr Isaac Anderson, RS Fr Hugo Webster, Fr Rylan Novak, Sr Josiah Tanner, RS Fr Ricky Posey, RS Jr Timothy Fluornoy, RS Jr Kevin Godfrey, RS Fr Avery Hinds, RS Jr Tyler Copeland, RS So Ayden Yoder

Captain center Tony Calvin has been a cornerstone of the line, working closely with younger teammates to build cohesion. Noah Moorer, slated to start at left tackle, stands out with his imposing 6'9", 310-pound frame, catching the eyes of NFL scouts.

            Special Teams
RS So K Adam Metcalf, RS So P Nicolas Temple

Kicker Adam Metcalf had a solid 2024 season, making 75% of his field goals and remaining perfect on extra points. However, he has yet to attempt a kick over 50 yards. Punter Nicolas Temple will aim to provide consistency in the kicking game, doing very well during last season.

            Defensive Line
Sr Cristian Dougherty, RS Sr Zachary Collier, RS Jr Louis Vance, RS Jr Sebastian Kendrick, RS Jr Asher Stafford, RS Sr Cade Atkins, RS Fr Avery Clay, RS Jr Tommy Marroquin, RS Fr Nathan Graham, Fr Zachariah LeBlanc, RS Fr Garrett Sampson, Fr Ivan Nelson, Fr Phoenix Lawrence

Cristian Dougherty and Zachary Collier lead a strong defensive line, combining for 14 sacks and 40 pressures last season. There is considerable excitement around nose tackle Avery Clay, who brings a unique blend of speed and strength to the interior.

            Inside Linebackers
Sr Xander Peterson, RS Fr Shawn Billups, RS So Trace Pollard, RS So Fabian Egan, Fr Luis Flores, RS Fr Hector Todd, RS Fr Morgan McIntyre

Transfers Shawn Billups and Trace Pollard are poised to make an immediate impact. Senior Xander Peterson, set to start, faces uncertainty with only 9 career tackles. This group must fill the gaps left by last season's departures.

            Outside Linebackers
Fr Jevon Sullivan, RS So Quinton McCray, RS Fr Mauricio Knox, RS Fr Connor McCray, RS Fr Frank Bateman

The outside linebacker group graduated four starters from last season and is relatively inexperienced. Fresh faces like Jevon Sullivan and Quinton McCray must adapt and contribute quickly.

            Cornerbacks
RS Jr Adrian Cunningham, Sr Connor Hampton, Sr Randy Thompson, RS Fr Garrett Tanaka, RS Jr Aden George, RS Fr Oswald Meier, Fr Zander Jefferson, RS So Ethan Meadows, Fr DeShawn Copeland

Adrian Cunningham, praised by Coach Pitts and DC Phoenix Thomas, is expected to lead the secondary after primarily playing as a nickel/dime back last season. Despite some older players, the group lacks extensive game experience, which will be a focal point this season.

            Safeties
RS Sr Giovanni Herbert, RS Sr Braylon Evans, Sr Robert French, RS Fr Nicolas McClendon, RS Jr Alec Durham, Fr Andre Nelson, Fr Marlon Griffith, Fr Rashaad Murphy Jr., RS Fr Alex Shelton

Team captain and preseason All-American Giovanni Herbert, alongside his best friend and roommate Braylon Evans, forms one of the best safety tandems in college football. Their leadership and playmaking abilities will be crucial to the Tar Heels' defensive success.

As the 2024 season approaches, the UNC Tar Heels have a roster brimming with potential and talent. Under Coach Bernard Pitts's leadership, the team is poised to make significant strides. Fans in Chapel Hill have every reason to be excited about the season ahead, as the Tar Heels aim to build on last year's successes and overcome new challenges.

                  What to Watch
                  Tar Heel Quarterbacks
The quarterback position for the Tar Heels remains in flux as head coach Bernard Pitts has decided to play Rylan Clark and Branden Barnett in the opener. Coach Pitts has emphasized the need to see both quarterbacks in game action before making a final decision on the starter. "We'll ride the hot hand after a few series," Pitts said, indicating that the competition will continue into the season. Clark, a highly-touted freshman, brings excitement and raw talent, while Barnett, a redshirt sophomore, offers a more seasoned approach, having played sparingly last season.

                  Defensive Showdown
Both teams boast elite defensive units, which will be pivotal in determining the game's outcome. The Tar Heels feature a veteran secondary anchored by preseason All-American safeties Giovanni Herbert and Braylon Evans. Their experience and leadership are expected to be crucial in shutting down Eastern Michigan’s passing game.

Eastern Michigan, on the other hand, returned eight starters from their defense last season. Despite their disappointing 2-10 record in 2023, the Eagles' defense has shown promise and resilience, led by standout players like redshirt senior OLB Nathanael Bishop and senior CB Calvin Henson. Their multiple-nickel base defense will look to disrupt UNC’s offensive rhythm.

                  Prediction
This game is a defensive battle, with both teams relying heavily on their ability to stymie the opponent's offensive efforts. The Tar Heels' slight edge in defensive talent and the dual-threat potential at quarterback could tip the scales in their favor. However, Eastern Michigan's experience and determination to improve from last season make them a formidable opponent. Expect a close, hard-fought contest, with the Tar Heels emerging narrowly victorious.

Tar Heels capture first win of 2024 season

CHAPEL HILL, NC—The North Carolina Tar Heels kicked off their 2024 season with a statement, dominating the Eastern Michigan Eagles in a 42-12 victory. The game showcased UNC's defensive strength and balanced offensive attack, setting an optimistic tone for the season ahead.

The Tar Heels couldn't have asked for a better start. On Eastern Michigan's opening drive, running back Levi Paul was met with a thunderous hit from safety Giovanni Herbert, causing a fumble. Herbert, showcasing his playmaking abilities, scooped up the loose ball and sprinted 25 yards to the end zone. "We wanted to set the tone early, and that play did just that," Herbert said post-game. With Adam Metcalf's extra point, UNC took an early 7-0 lead.

Eastern Michigan responded with a 42-yard field goal from Ethan Frost, cutting the lead to 7-3. However, UNC's offense quickly regained momentum. On his first drive, Branden Barnett connected with freshman wide receiver Elias Smith for a 3-yard touchdown pass.

"Elias made a great play coming back to the ball, and the offensive line gave me the time I needed," Barnett commented post-game.

As the first quarter wound down, freshman running back Umberto Allen powered through for a 1-yard touchdown, stretching the lead to 21-3. The Tar Heels' offense was clicking, and their defense was stifling, setting the stage for a dominant performance.

The second quarter continued to highlight UNC's dominance. Eastern Michigan struggled offensively, epitomized by a failed fourth-down attempt stopped cold by defensive lineman Zachary Collier.

"We pride ourselves on making big stops, and today was no different," said Collier, who finished with eight tackles and a sack.

Barnett struck again, finding wide receiver John Kauffman for an 11-yard touchdown, pushing the score to 28-3.

Ethan Frost managed another field goal for Eastern Michigan, this time from 38 yards, making it 28-6. But UNC wasn't finished. With just 42 seconds left in the half, freshman quarterback Rylan Clark connected with tight end William Riggins for a 17-yard touchdown pass. "Rylan threw a perfect ball, and contributing felt great," Riggins noted. Metcalf's kick made it 35-6 at halftime.

The third quarter turned into a defensive battle, with neither team managing to score early on. UNC's defense continued to dominate, stifling Eastern Michigan's offensive efforts. The Eagles had a chance to reduce the deficit but missed a 48-yard field goal attempt. Frost later hit a 43-yard field goal, bringing the score to 35-9.

UNC's alternating quarterback strategy continued, with Clark and Barnett getting reps, but neither team found the end zone in the third quarter. "It's all about finding the rhythm and keeping the defense on their toes," Coach Pitts said about the quarterback rotation.

The fourth quarter began with another standout play from UNC's defense. Defensive lineman Zachary Collier sacked Eastern Michigan quarterback Hector Page, forcing a fumble, which Collier recovered. This turnover set up a 1-yard touchdown run by senior running back Mason Scott.

Eastern Michigan managed one more score, a 47-yard field goal by Frost, but it was too little, too late. The Tar Heels effectively ran down the clock to secure their dominant 42-12 victory.

                    Game Stats and Highlights
Quarterback Rotation: Rylan Clark and Branden Barnett alternated drives, both showing potential. Barnett finished 9/15 for 123 yards and two touchdowns, while Clark went 8/12 for 85 yards and one touchdown.

Defensive Standouts: Giovanni Herbert and Zachary Collier were defensive stars, with Herbert scoring a touchdown and Collier contributing eight tackles, a sack, and a fumble recovery.

Special Teams: Adam Metcalf was perfect on extra points, while Ethan Frost accounted for all Eastern Michigan's points with four field goals.

                    Coach's Comments
"We saw some great things out there today, especially from our defense," said Coach Pitts. "Both Branden and Rylan did some good things, and we'll continue to evaluate them as we move forward. Our focus now is to build on this win and prepare for next week."

                    Looking Ahead
The Tar Heels will look to continue their strong start to the season as they prepare for a challenging matchup against Virginia next week. The Cavaliers are coming off their own week one thrashing of Army, winning 36-10.

#11 LSU Upset by Unranked Indiana

In one of the most shocking weekend results, #11 LSU was blown out 45-14 by unranked Indiana. The Hoosiers dominated from start to finish, forcing four turnovers, including two fumble recoveries and two interceptions off LSU quarterback Jaylen Walton. The Tigers’ sideline was marred by inter-team fights, highlighting the team's internal strife. Coach Vincent Walton did not hold back in his post-game comments, expressing fury and disappointment, saying, "Our squad needs to stop reading their own press clippings and focus on the game."

                      #4 Georgia Outlasted by #24 Minnesota, 22-17

In another unexpected twist, #24 Minnesota held off #4 Georgia with a 22-17 victory. Georgia found themselves trailing 22-10 with just 2:21 left in the fourth quarter. Despite a late touchdown from Collin Norris to Cortez Brewer, Georgia failed to recover the onside kick, sealing their fate. This loss puts early pressure on Georgia to bounce back quickly.

#8 Wisconsin Stunned by #22 Kentucky

True freshman quarterback Shemar Lang led #22 Kentucky to a stunning victory over #8 Wisconsin, throwing for 407 yards and two touchdowns. Lang’s performance was nothing short of spectacular and marked him as a player to watch this season. The Wildcats' offense overpowered the Badgers, delivering a significant early-season upset.

Alabama’s junior quarterback Xzavier Erickson began his Heisman campaign with a stellar performance, throwing five touchdowns in a 38-13 win over USC. Erickson’s efficient 27/34 passing for 271 yards showcased his potential to be one of the top players in the nation this season.

Despite his smaller stature, Keller is not afraid to throw his weight around and deliver punishing hits. He takes favorable angles in run support and shows a natural bounce and well-timed jumps, making him competitive in 50-50 situations. Although he has primarily handled zone coverage responsibilities, his lateral burst and loose hips suggest he could excel in a nickel role. Keller’s fearlessness and playmaking ability set him apart as a top defensive back recruit.

Known for his velocity and accuracy, Adams is comfortable rolling out and throwing on the run. His junior season saw him using his legs more effectively in zone-read situations, enhancing his dual-threat capability. Adams' likable personality, leadership qualities, and strong work ethic off the field make him a natural leader. He projects as a Power 5 starter with the talent to excel at any top college program.

                        7. RB Quinton Cleveland - 5'8" 178 lbs | Carver HS, Montgomery, AL

He has accumulated 2,765 yards and 40 touchdowns on the ground in his first two years, averaging 9.2 yards per carry. After transferring to IMG Academy, Cleveland received high praise for his performance. His patient feet, vision, and swift lateral cuts make him a tough cover in various offensive looks. Cleveland's explosiveness and versatility make him a standout running back recruit.

Ryder Ward is an athletic edge defender with long limbs and upfield burst. As a face-up rusher, Ward has consistently pressured quarterbacks from a wide 9 position in a four-man front. He has added good weight in preparation for his senior season and continues to develop his physicality. Ward’s relentless motor and formidable punch make it difficult for blockers to engage him. Improving his flexibility could lead to more sacks, as it would allow him to dip more effectively when turning the corner. Ward’s potential as a disruptive force on the edge makes him a coveted recruit.

                        9. QB Ellis Gray - 6'4" 210 lbs | Saraland HS, Saraland, AL

Ball combines a rare frame length, fluidity, and sudden athleticism, making him effective in man-to-man coverage. His impressive sophomore-year track times (10.81 100 meters) add to his athletic profile. Ball’s instinctive play style and ability to cover the field make him a top defensive back recruit in the 2025 class.

Tar Heels riding high following Week 1 win

                          Running Back by Committee

The Tar Heels showcased a dynamic running game this week, moving away from the preseason predictions of a bellcow approach with Micah Britt II. Britt impressed with 75 yards on the ground, averaging a solid 5.43 yards per carry. True freshman Umberto Allen also made his mark, scoring a touchdown and averaging 6 yards per carry. Senior running back Mason Scott also found the end zone, although he was less efficient with his carries. Coach Pitts emphasized that the team will continue utilizing multiple backs to keep defenses guessing and maintain a fresh rushing attack.

                          Defense Starts Hot

The Tar Heels' defense set the tone early against Eastern Michigan, holding the Eagles to just 12 points and under 260 total yards. Redshirt senior Zach Collier was a standout, recording six tackles for loss, a sack, and a forced fumble. Team captain Giovanni Herbert also had a stellar performance, forcing a fumble and scoring a defensive touchdown. The defense's ability to force two turnovers was crucial in stifling Eastern Michigan’s offense and securing a dominant win.

                          QBs to Still Be Rotated

The quarterback competition between Rylan Clark and Branden Barnett remains unresolved. Both quarterbacks led scoring drives and made impressive plays, but Coach Pitts hinted that Barnett may be starting to edge out the freshman Clark. While both QBs will rotate against Virginia, the coaching staff plans to limit the rotations compared to previous games. The goal is to have a clear starter decided after the upcoming game, providing stability and continuity for the rest of the season.

North Carolina Offense vs. Virginia Defense:

The Tar Heels will rely on a balanced offensive attack focusing on the run game. Micah Britt II, Umberto Allen, and Mason Scott will continue to share carries, keeping the Cavaliers' defense on their toes. The passing game, led by Branden Barnett/Rylan Clark and supported by standout receivers John Kauffman and Elias Smith, will look to exploit Virginia’s secondary.
Virginia Offense vs. North Carolina Defense:

Virginia's offense, spearheaded by QB Harley Mason, will aim to utilize their Pistol formation to create mismatches. Walter Michel’s versatility as a rusher and receiver adds another layer of complexity. The Tar Heels defense, with standout performances from Zachary Collier and Giovanni Herbert, will need to maintain their aggressive approach to stifle Virginia’s passing and rushing attacks.

                            Key Matchups

UNC’s Offensive Line vs. Virginia’s Defensive Line: The battle in the trenches will be crucial, with UNC needing to protect their quarterbacks and create running lanes against a stout Virginia defensive front.

Virginia’s Receivers vs. UNC’s Secondary: Devan Graham will challenge UNC’s secondary, which has been solid in limiting opponent passing yards. The Tar Heels’ defensive backs must stay disciplined and avoid giving up big plays.

                            Prediction
This game is expected to be a close contest, with both teams having strengths that can exploit the other's weaknesses. However, with a slight edge in the spread and a balanced offensive game plan, North Carolina may have the upper hand in this pivotal ACC matchup.

Tar Heels survive thriller against Cavaliers

CHAPEL HILL, NC— In a game filled with high drama and standout performances, the North Carolina Tar Heels narrowly defeated the Virginia Cavaliers 23-20, improving to 2-0 on the season. The battle in Chapel Hill kept the 19,800 fans on the edge of their seats from start to finish.

UNC started the game strong with an efficient drive led by quarterback Branden Barnett. Facing a crucial third-and-one at the Virginia 7-yard line, Barnett connected with wide receiver Eddie Potts for a 7-yard touchdown pass. "We wanted to strike first and set the pace," Barnett said. Adam Metcalf's extra point put UNC up 7-0, bringing the home crowd to life.

However, Virginia quickly responded. With UNC pinned deep, running back Mason Scott was tackled in his own end zone by Virginia’s defensive lineman Preston Hawkins for a safety, cutting the lead to 7-2. Virginia capitalized further with a 30-yard field goal by kicker Lance Betts, narrowing the score to 7-5.

The second quarter saw both teams trading blows. Metcalf extended UNC’s lead with a 38-yard field goal, but Virginia answered with quarterback Harley Mason finding wide receiver Tristen Miles for an 8-yard touchdown, putting the Cavaliers ahead 12-10. "It was a tough back-and-forth battle, but we knew we had to keep fighting," said UNC safety Giovanni Herbert.

UNC regained the lead before halftime with another Metcalf field goal, making it 13-12. A pivotal moment came when Virginia’s running back Walter Michel fumbled after a hit from UNC cornerback Connor Hampton, who also recovered the ball, setting up UNC with excellent field position.

The third quarter saw the Tar Heels extend their lead. Freshman quarterback Rylan Clark, rotating with Barnett, led a scoring drive with an 8-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Theodore Gilmore. "Rylan stepped up big today," praised Coach Bernard Pitts. Metcalf’s extra point made it 20-12. Although Metcalf missed a 37-yard field goal attempt later in the quarter, he redeemed himself with a 46-yarder, pushing UNC’s lead to 23-12.

Virginia mounted a late comeback. Harley Mason connected with wide receiver Manuel Potter for a 20-yard touchdown pass with just over a minute remaining, followed by a successful two-point conversion, narrowing the gap to 23-20. "We knew it was going to be a fight to the end," Barnett remarked.

Virginia’s onside kick attempt failed, and UNC managed to run out the clock, sealing the victory. "Our defense was resilient, and we made the necessary plays to win," Coach Pitts commented post-game.

As the Tar Heels move forward, their balanced offensive strategy and tenacious defense offer promising signs for the rest of the season.
