I think its 3 yrs but cant remember the fourth is team option i think.... you can ask for a trade if you don't want to stay with that team after year 1. After 3rd year I'd like to try for a max deal or maybe become a free agent after year 2

Most people would want to experience of being a Free Agent especially if 2K got it right this year. So if it was realistic you'd have to wait for about 4 years because the team most likely will pick that up. So I believe how 2K had it worked best because you can be a FA or do it how you wanted by just resigning for a few more years or maybe have the option where you can asked to be picked up w/ a team option after the first year for people like you.
You should be able to negotiate that where that'll keep you happy as well. Just sign a 1-2 year deal w/ your current team. But most barely get through one year and they do that because of attributes. I play MyCareer heavy and barely reach 4 seasons unless I Sim.

Re: NBA 2K17 MyCAREER Blog with Senior Producer Ben Bishop
Oh yea one big question I forgot. Will it be easier to sim through seasons without missing off days? Last year if we simmed the game before an off day we couldn't participate in the off day immediately following the game that we simmed. So it was either play the game or miss a practice. I thought this was unnecessarily penalizing people that want to get through their career fast. I want to actually finish a full 15-20 year career this year but things like that made it difficult. Please tell me that's changed.Chicago Bulls•Toronto Raptors•Carolina Panthers•Toronto Blue Jays•Toronto Maple LeafsComment

I feel you man and both of those seem like things you'd be able to work on and improve in real life. But at the same time I'd rather make another player that can do other things than play pro am against a cheeser who can do everythingApparently you can't change your username.

So separate park and proam from mycareer!!! many park and proam guys don't want to trudge through MC to upgrade their character. And likewise MC guys don't want the restrictions setup because of park and proam.
Personally, I used to create all kinds of MCs before they made the MyPlayer the only option. I made my kids, previous players, and even just random characters I thought up. I can no do this.Comment

I believe that they do this to reward the user for actually playing games and to put a stop to "farming" XP, because you could create a secondary MyCareer file, sim every last game, appear at every endorsement event and rack up the XP very quickly, so I doubt it's changed at all tbh.Comment

I see a lot of similarities between the direction they've taken their MyCareer and the Persona games. That's not a bad decision, it's a great model to follow for a sports RPG.NBA 2K18 ratings for several seasons generated from advanced analytics using the SportsCrunch system:

You would upgrade your player as you went along in each mode. Why should a character in a single player mode do anything with a character in a multiplayer mode. also why have upgrades in mp outside of badges. you should choose an archetype and thats what you got. you could then earn badges to support that archetype. thats easier to balance online, and allows newcomers to jump in without all the grind.Comment

Ranked Pro-Am isn't so bad because the matchmaking is a little more random but last year before it was fixed, people were playing 1 v 1's in MyCourt for hours just padding stats so they could be at the top of the leaderboards. Could you imagine the amount of 100 point games that would go on at a Park of two groups of friends purposely padding their stats to get badges? It'd be crazy and even easier than those. I mean I played a 1 v 1 v 1 game on The Stage for just 500 VC and both players ended up double teaming me the entire game while making it so one of them won. The lengths that people will go through for this stuff for even the smallest of things is ridiculous, I can only imagine that.Comment
