The Golf Club Interview with Pete Garcin Reveals Even More Details About the Game

Stealthy Box recently had an opportunity to interview Pete Garcin, Executive Producer of The Golf Club. There are some interesting nuggets of information throughout, but I thought this particular part of the interview was really good.

SBX: Tell us a bit about the online/social components of the game. How will courses be shared, and how will online competitive multiplayer work for two or more people?

PG: Sharing is designed to be as seamless and simple as possible. Once you’ve created a course, you can hit the ‘Publish’ button and your course will be posted to the server and available for others to play. And to make sharing a large number of courses feasible, we only upload the “DNA” of the course, so the amount of data that it transfers is extremely small –- downloading and browsing new courses online is essentially invisible compared to local courses.

In terms of competition we’ve moved to an asynchronous model of gameplay, so you’re almost always competing against your friends and rivals. No matter whether your friends are online or not, you can always choose to play against their best balls in the form of “ghost balls.” If they are online, you can invite them to join a round and play together in real time, but there’s no waiting; if you don’t want to sit in a lobby waiting for your friend to join, you can send them the request, start your round, and then eventually your friend will catch up. And if they do join mid-round, because our course is all one big world, you can turn around and see them teeing off in the distance. It’s really super cool when that happens.

You can read the entire interview here.

So if there is more than one person playing on a course at a certain time, you'd be able to see them play and play with them spontaneously?

If so, that is ****ing sweet.

The rise of independents in the sports genre is a welcome addition. I hope we see more of it. Tired of EA's monopolistic and exclusivity practices. It's ruining the genre. This is a breath of fresh air.

This game sounds interesting, they could be onto something here is things work as they plan with this game. I definitely will follow to see how this game goes and heck might even end up buying it when I do finally get a PS4

was trying to figure out if that was a pitch mark or a divot on the green...(?)

Also i guess i never really considered this, but that made me wonder if this is a single player game or 4 player. I dont recall anybody saying. (but my memory may be failing me at the moment)

It does look like a pitch mark left from the ball near the hole but I don't see the ball being played by the golfer just off the green. You would think the pitch mark would be repaired before he played his shot from off the green though.

The news about sharing courses is very intriguing. I'm going to keep this game on my radar. And yes, competition is a good thing.

Agree, but not to be picky....notice it appears the golfers feet are not connected to the ground and the shadows verify this......hope they get this fixed prior to release. On the plus side, it appears that there is a ball mark or a chunk of a divot on the green....VERY NICE!

^ I'm hoping this is an earlier screenshot. Notice the flag... They've already addressed that. Hopefully they've fixed the player's feet on the ground.

                          Edit: it appears they have
