Oh and did you know you can deflect passes and get steals with hands up on defense (up on the right stick)? This is real useful when guarding the post entry pass.

I hope they dont cave and start dumbing down and automating the game for people who think its too easy... i have zero problems getting rebounds or playing D... my favorite part is funneling fisher or kobe baseline into Dwight...

Switching to them and contesting the shot.

the only thing that sucks is the A.I teammates dotn really try to contest shots..you basically have to do everything...which I dont really have a problem with because I LIKE switching and doing everything myself...

its just a lot different that you can just sit on one person and allow your teammates to play D for you.

        Welcome change though.

I agree here im not having the rebounding issue either as well as defense, but im used to playing defense in this game from last year and this is a similar approach you had to take to shut a team down... hunker down, play the angles, body up on the guy when he tries to run in the lane to cut him off, run him into the help D...etc. People didnt like it then because it takes work, and its no different now, just more work.

This again is the demo though, im sure the final has more things in it on both sides of the ball than what we see

Well I'm one of those players that likes to just guard one player so this game can get frustrating on D. Because the AI doesn't seem to be as aggressive on D as I am.

Had the same problem last year on D but it improved a bit once I found a cam I could work with and I'm sure it'll be the same this year.

It's a philosophical error to have your AI teammates be dribble cones unless you switch to them. When you have defensive stars like Artest and Howard on your team, you should be able to strategically work with those tools. The same way Dwight is smart enough on offense to fight for deep post position, he should be smart enough on D to block a shot that you serve up to him on a silver platter--you know, like Derek Fisher attempting a layup deep in the paint, for example. In no sim reality is Derek Fisher going to lay the ball in over D12 more than 1% of the time. The other 99 percent, D12 is going to send that mess into space.

Same thing for Ron. If my defense has compromised Orlando to the point where Pietrus is isolating against Ron with 3 secs left on the shot clock, I should be able to focus on boxing out Dwight. It's not simply a matter of your teammates playing D for you. It's the strategic freedom to work with the tools you have on your team. The more favorable a matchup is, the less you should have to micromanage it.

That's like if you have a football game, and Justin Tuck won't tackle the runner unless you force him to. Then what's the point of having Justin Tuck? Any scrub can tackle if you do it manually.

And besides just the strategy, it looks odd having these automatons not reacting to the ball. If Synergy is going to give these players great AI according to their real selves, we should see evidence of this in their little digital brain activity.

Just like a person, the CPU should have to break your defense to score Having AI teammates ignore their assignments and defensive roles isn't challenging, it's tedium.

I'm reserving all judgement until retail. It's just philosophically, I think the AI should have defensive tendencies the same way they have offensive tendencies.

it's a five man game. We should be able to play the odds of the matchups with the CPU help.

Re: NBA Live 10 Demo Available, Post Impressions Here (360)

I just sincerely hope the defense gets a much needed look next year. All the guys saying "defense is great..." I sincerely hope the developers are not happy with the defense. Of course, when it gets the same look as the offense did, we'll see people saying something different next year, much like this year compared to last year.

It's passable this year. There are some great rotations... but right now, if I'm playing as Artest, I'm not trying to "funnel" someone into my teammates, I'm manning up on you and you damn well better know you're going to work hard to get around me. I don't get that feeling here.

Still hoping the final fixes a few things. That manual contest button is useless in the demo.

This is the exact same problem I have I'm not saying the game is terrible because of it though.

Its just that I don't really like that design decision that's why I'm hoping its improved in the final game.

It's something I can deal with but not one I'm going to be happy about.

Your not able to do that now? It's really not that difficult to do. Defensively I think their is room for improvement, theirs always room for improvement. But that's one thing I like about Live last year especially against a human player. It was much easier for me to keep stars such as Lebron and Kobe in front of me when I played against another user for the simple fact I could cut off their angles and body them. It was a much difficult task in 2k9. And also, sending guys in certain directions towards your help defense is also a strategic part of the game. They do this is real life games as well.

Defensively is the game perfect? No, but I think it does a pretty good job, especially with the help rotations. One thing that I haven't seen in this demo yet that was in Live 09 was defensive players rotating over and taking charges. Mcdyess use to do it a lot of times when I played with the Pistons online. I do think their should be defensive tendencies for defensive players as they are for offensive players. You have people like Varejo who are all over the court most of the time and looking to take charges, and people who look to block shots everytime on defensive rotations a la Ben Wallace in his Detroit Piston days.

Is their a reason some of the EA guys won't chime in and answer some of these simple questions????? Steph????? Is it because they are aware that some of the things we are noticing exist and they don't want to answer?????? They read the boards how about some clarification before "LOYAL" purchasers of their product find thenselves PO'd

                          good point Born. I agree.

And I dont knwo but when I have Artest or Kobe on me in Live i defintly have to work for my points.

not saying the d is perfect...nothing ever is and it can always be improved.

just saying i can work with it.

I have no problems staying between my man and the basket on most occasions. Unless I fall for a fake or cross and move the L-stick too far in one direction and get off balance then I don't have much of a problem. I've forced tons of bad shots with Kobe and Artest. On most occasions I'm giving a step and trying to make everyone a jump shooter. With that extra step it gives me wiggle room for error and I can react and stay in front of the guy.

If anything I'd say that the AI of offense needs to realize when good D is being played and not force up as many poor shots.

I agree Pared. From the defensive blog they made it sound like it would be a battle between the defensive and offensive player. Mike even mentioned in that blog that there were some things he wasn't ready to talk about yet, but we still haven't heard much about it.
