Re: NBA Live 10 Demo Available, Post Impressions Here (360)
Ok so I've had the demo for a couple of hours. Here are my initial impressions which may change in the next week or so as I get more time with the game. *** I played the first three games on Allstar, then the rest (maybe another 8-10 games on Superstar). I figured I would break this down into sections so you guys can read the parts that are important to you. Here we go....
Graphics
Huge step up from 09, lets get that out the way. The player models look very good. There are plenty of different body types, but the skin textures could use a little work. The players often look too "shiny", and certain players (while playing in the "hangar") have the completely wrong skin tone. Lebron James is not that light skinned. But thats why I said in the hangar, because the lighting in there and on the court are very different. Another thing that caught my attention are the faces. While VASTLY improved over last year, they are hit or miss, and they are still a step below 2k9's faces(not overall graphics, just the faces). Lets talk about the court. The lighting in the crowd is great, very comparable to the real life Staples Center. There are cheerleaders, but I have not noticed them even stand up or do anything(not important I know, but if they're there, do something). The bench shows support through out the game, but sometimes they just stay standing up for a while. I decided to tone down the brightness of the game, and the saturation. Ok back to the players. You can definitely tell there are tons of new animations the Devs have captured to prevent the warping that happened in previous years. My only gripe was that a lot of moves still looked unnatural and robotic, but the ones that flowed smoothly, look SICK! Luckily the dribbling animations are spot on.
Presentation
I love the Hangar. I love how Lebron walks in and pretty much gives everybody an "AYO" (im in the building). Being able to play in the Hangar while the game loads is great so your not just there waiting for it to load. Once it does load, it shows you a pic of the staples center (which could be a little more detailed, and crisp) and off to the arena. There are no (at least in the demo) introductions, rather yet your team stands together and it shows all of their names and position. This area could have done so much more. It shows pregame routines which look great and you see players laughin and goofin off. Overall its pretty much on point, and I'm sure(I hope, lol) that there are other elements or cut scenes the full game will have.
Audio
Sneaker squeaks, players talking, and the commentary crew all sound great. The commentary kept it pretty varied. I played alot of games, and it was kind of rare to hear the same thing twice. Thats reassuring considering this only a demo. What I didnt like was the sound of the net, bouncing of the ball, and the ridiculous sounding blocks. LOL, I used Jameer Nelson and barely blocked Fisher and it sounded like I punched the ball to the other side of the court. Nothing serious there, and I'll probably just turn the sound effects slider down when playing the full version.
Gameplay
This is what you guys want to know about. Well lets get right into it. The right stick is the. I played in the hangar for almost a half hour before even playing a game. I love the hesitation moves, the step backs, the double cross, the spin move. It took alot to get used to using the right stick. It's very responsive and theres different combinations. You can use the RT + the stick, or you can go without the RT. Your momentum, angles, and player all affect what you can and can not pull off(which is great). Each player has a sense of weight to him. First thing I noticed is when I switched from Wade to Dwight. WOW what a difference. Wade can pretty much cross, spin and drive to the hoop for the slam. Meanwhile, Dwight can do standard cross overs(that will get stripped when playing a real game) and a slow drive to the hoop. I noticed that Kobe, Wade, Lebron and pretty much everyone in the hangar had their own dunks. I didnt see Wade doing any Lebron tomahawks, or Dwight doing a Kobe dunk, etc. The dunks no longer suck you in, and look pretty fluid. The passing game is serious. I love the LT+ Right stick combo. After I felt comfortable I hardly used Icon passing, or regular ol' A button. Keep in mind though, that overusing the LT+ RS will likely lead to some unfortunate turnovers. Especially if there are two players in the area you want to pass it to. Thanks to this system Fastbreaks are beautiful to run. Look at one instance I had. Nelson on the break, crosses Kobe, goes semi baseline, Kobe cuts him off, Nelson fires a behind the back(using the RS) pass to Howard who then proceeds to two hand SLAM, and I mean SLAM right on top of Kobe. Kobe then drops to the ground, and looks at the ref like "Thats not an offensive foul? (No Kobe it's not, it was a top ten play on Sports Center, thats what that was).
Like I stated earlier, you can dribble how you want to, or how the player your using will allow you to. I tried a simple cross on Bynum with Dwight multiple times, but the help defense would come over and strip me. yes help defense exists in this game. More on this in a minute. Sometimes the defense is unforgiving. I understand Pietrus is not a GREAT ball handler, but he's decent and he's a SF/SG. Anways, I used Pietrus various times and anytime I put it on the floor, RON RON would steal it. I know Ron Artest is a beast on D, but not to the degree he was showing me. Dont tell me I need to work on my dribble cuz I know I do, but this happened ANY and EVERY time Pietrus tried to go from right hand to left on a hesitation move. Lets talk about rebounding. I noticed boxing out, but I didnt feel like I was in control of it, like I should. So I would pretty much just be in the vicinity of the hoop and try to time my jump. All is not bad though, because when I timed it correctly, I snatched the ball out of the air. It felt good. I even started tipping it to myself, or to a teammate.
Now for defense, and this is the area that needs the most improvement in my opinion. I am WAAAAAAAAAAAAAY to used to using the LT button to get into a defensive stance. I kept accidentally switching players, but with time this will be corrected. By the way, can someone please tell me what the hell the RB (defensive assist button) does? It did not in anyway seem to help me. It maybe locked on, but it keeps you very far from the ball handler, and the minute you try to move closer, the lock on would break. I think every game needs a defensive stance button, so I dont know how this is going to work. It seems like EA just wants you to try to stay in front of your man and rely on help defense. Which is cool, but it if the AI blows by you(and it will on SUPERSTAR), it makes your defense OVER-REACT and you get left with a wide open lane. The result is alot of and 1's for the AI. The whole adjusting their shot thing is WAY too effective. They practically dont miss when that animation plays(<-- this felt like a canned animation). The steal button felt a little unresponsive to me as well, especially going for a steal on a passing lane. The block button worked, but I got called for a lot of fouls. So I made sure to let go of turbo when I hit Y to block, and I still got called for a lot of fouls. If this is the case, your Post players in live will foul out of a game a lot.
The AI in this game is great. Kobe did what he does and destroyed me in a couple of games. Fisher let it rain when I left him open. Ron Artest cause havock on defense like in real life. Luke Walton cheered from the bench like he does in real life(lol). When I played as LA, Orlando fed the ball inside to Dwight, who proceeded to embarass Bynum. Rashard let it rain from 3. Nelson got penetration and kicked it out to a wide open Carter, who pump faked the three and drove the lane and totally tea-bagged Gasol. This synergy stuff is great. The players do what their supposed to.
I'm almost wrapping this review up. My biggest problem was still the way the game moves. Theres still a little bit of jerkiness moving around, and the players move like their on crack. My solution was this. I went into settings and toned down the speed by a few notches. The game moved and looked more believable after this. I hope the Developers tone down the default speed to about where I had it. NBA live has stepped it up in just about every way possible. The total control they give you is fantastic, and I think it will be 100% working by next years Live.
To sum up my review. NBA LIVE 10 is actually going to contend this year, but there are still minor problems that may or may not be ironed out in time for OCT. 6. I am not ready to give Live the title until I see what 2k has up their sleeve. But based on the games I have played so far I'm going to make this statement.
If you took Live's presentation, visual quality, and total control sytem, and added 2k's(2k9) animations, player faces, and defense, we would have the best video game representation of basketball EVER!
Thanks for reading guys. Give me opinions, debate on what I said, or ask me questions. See you guys later.Last edited by MagillaGorilla; 09-11-2009, 01:44 PM.Comment

Re: NBA Live 10 Demo Available, Post Impressions Here (360)
Agreed. They did a stellar job on him.
Honestly I don't like the demo as much as the final i played.
If memory serves correct and its been over a week. But the control was much tighter. They feel a bit too loose to me right now on offense and defense....
So its fun to play again but not the same experience I remember.
also not a big fan of the auto post ups both games went to.
I'm not going to give an impression for a multitude of reasons, but I will urge everyone to remember this: We've been dealing with basically the same control scheme since 2k7. There are certain muscle memory functions that you have to unlearn before you can even have real "fun". Also, there are a lot of nuances in this system. There are subtleties. In a certain sense, you have to treat this as the first basketball game you've ever played to be able to experience the system on its own terms.
Even though some people may be reticent to do so, I think the average 2k gamer needs 4-10 hours of unlearning before they are truly giving this game a fair chance.
I'm seeing a lot of complaints and issues here that have a lot to do with people not understanding the controls, or treating this game according to the standards and habits of the other game.
Also: Freestyle passing might be the best b-ball gaming innovation in at least 3 years.Comment

Re: NBA Live 10 Demo Available, Post Impressions Here (360)
Basically I like the demo - However the biggest negative I have is on the Defensive side of the ball. It is near impossible it seems to stop anyone or stay in front of any defender much less Kobe. It may be tweaked in the final, but as it stands, playing D is not nearly any fun compared to how playing O is a blast with the plethora of moves and shots at our disposal. I will surely give this a rent at best.
stumble great demo review after the learning curve I found the game gets better to ME. Because you start to xconxwmtrate on playing good hoopsCatch me on that #SimNation #SimHangOut Friday's @ 10:00 pm est https://www.youtube.com/playlist?lis...N7yxMiElOpMl_BComment

Ahh... Ladies and gentlemen! I think LIVE is back.
I got up an hour early so I could at least DL the demo. While I got dressed for work I started reading impressions on my iPhone. I started getting so overly excited that I had to call in and say I was going to be an hour late.
Anyway, The graphics are amazing. The player faces are spot on and the into the hanger was great. Seeing LJames, arms raised high like "I'm hear" let's get it started is great.
Getting used to all the players in there can take up most of your time. There is a learning curve to this years game. It's not 09 by any means. Which is a good thing and bad thing.
It's only a bad thing because I'm so used to playing Live 09 and the controls and player movement is very different. But, different in a good more realistic way. Shooting is amazing. Being able to hold and then release or a quick pop is really done well.
Driving hard to the paint and pulling up felt so natural it was very impressive. I've seen a couple post were guys are having a hard time pulling up in the paint without doing a lay up. I haven't had any issues with it, just let off the L stick before pushing the X button to shoot. It works for me.
The difference between each player is so amazingly done it's sick. LJames feels more heavy and his moves are more drawn out. Whereas Kobe is quick and silkly smooth.
I haven't gotten out of the hanger to actually play a game so I can't comment on that. I had to go into work and forgot to pick up dry cleaning so I've ruined part of my day to play a demo of a video game.
You wouldn't tell that I'm 34 and getting ready to be married can you? Haha... I love being a grown up...:wink:Comment

Full court shots need work. Every shot goes close to the rim, no matter the distance.
They don't hit, but they miss the rim by about a foot.<!--[if gte mso 9]><xml> <o:OfficeDocumentSettings> <o:RelyOnVML/> <o:AllowPNG/> </o:OfficeDocumentSettings> </xml><![endif]--><!--[if gte mso Re: NBA Live 10 Demo Available, Post Impressions Here (360)
Not over-the-moon with this, but Czar's thought that it wasn't as good as the final reassured me a bit.
Positives:
Love the movement, I feel in control of basic dribbling (the wide backwards turn when you jam LS the opposite direction and slightly back is a little wonky, but that's about it), the RS dribbles are responsive, and I love being able to explode out.
My favorite part so far is the collection of moving, stepback, and running jumpers -- using Kobe and nailing the stepback fade from the elbow is a thing of beauty. I didn't have any problems getting what I wanted, including a fading bank shot with VC that was really pretty.
The driving layup and dunk control will take a little getting used to, mainly because I'm not used to having the 2-step/Euro step options as well as having to focus so much attention on LS when shooting. I like all the options though and it felt good the few times I was able to Iso and drive into the paint then finish on the side I wanted to.
The overall look of the game is very nice. I think I'll probably adjust my TV settings a bit to tone the brightness down, but everything looks very crisp and I didn't have a problem with any of the player models. Kobe looks amazing IMO and the skin textures are FN-esque.
I actually didn't have too hard of a time playing defense on perimeter players. Like Czar said, if you use the angles and feather the LS instead of jamming it in different directions, don't reach, don't (for the love of god) use the RS "hands-up" pose, you can prevent penetration and force them into a tough shot. Sometimes it seems like you can't prevent them drawing a foul (don't contest or anything but they still get a shoulder into you and get the whistle), but I didn't feel the need for a defensive lock button or anything. Contesting felt good.
Off-ball control and passing is easy to use. I don't know what Ray is complaining about really, I was able to icon pass fine with LT -- just hit the button quickly and you can even continue holding LT and make multiple passes. I had to get used to LT being the button, but other than that, I didn't have much problem. Direct passing is still pretty crappy, but I don't think there will ever be a solution to that when you point the LS at 2 players.. inevitably it'll be the wrong one about half of the time. I love being able to quickly control an off-ball man and run him to his spot... had some really nice catch-and-shoots with Pietrus and Lewis just by using that quickly and rubbing the defender off of Dwight or someone.
Negatives:
Don't like that you can't really use LT passing when you're running a playset. Seemed like it would cancel the play most of the time when I'd icon pass to the correct man. Having to use normal passing for plays would be a bummer because it still kinda sucks... I think a good idea would be making it so if the left stick is neutral and you press 'A' when it's glowing above the designated man, it passes him the ball. That would eliminate the confusion the other poster mentioned as well.
Is there a "defensive switch" button? This was driving me crazy -- in fast break situations/pick and rolls when you get switched off, there was no way to reliably get back on your man. Even when I would get up close to my designated man (i.e. Kobe on Vince), the previous defender would often stay there. I was tapping LT and RB (thinking maybe defensive assist would take me to the right man) but no dice. This is a MUST for team play online and just in general IMO.. can't run a smart defense without the ability to call people off and get back to your original man. That's especially true since matchups are such a big part of this year's game.
I found it very hard to play defense when the offensive player was moving quickly. Granted, that may be realistic, but it seemed as if every time they had a running start in the fastbreak, they managed to weasel around me and score. Sometimes it was contested, but it just seemed like you can't move nearly fast enough backwards (even turning around to run properly) to stop the break. This is another one where it's probably me not being used to it, but it stood out to me as annoying.
Few too many offensive boards for my liking (the CPU). Again, might not understand the boxing out mechanic.. probably my fault.
Gotta get used to pick and roll control -- seemed like they rarely set the screen correctly and I had people like VC occasionally setting screens (which was probably my fault since you can choose) instead of bigs. Just a little confusing and didn't work as well as last year (which is probably a good thing I suppose, since it was a money play).
Animations are still not entirely natural-looking... warping on rebounds and blocks is the main issue, but also the post-play cuts and running back (as has been mentioned from the other videos) look a bit strange, like they fast-forward briefly. I didn't have too many head-scratchers in-game aside from a VC standing dunk under the rim, but in the hangar, there were definitely some weird dunk animations.
Loose balls and rebounding is not as tight as I'd hoped. There were several times when a ball would get deflected or stolen and my players would be in position but would just kinda stand there... I'd see some amazing-looking hustle sequences, but then randomly nobody would go get the ball after all that effort. I think I just don't completely understand how rebounding works -- I thought it was "Hold Y to box out, release to jump" and it seems like that sometimes.. but like on free throws as soon as you touch Y they jump for it. Devs, can you clarify the rebounding controls a bit for us?
Overall though I had a good time with it. I know I'll be playing the hell out of it in the next few weeks, so I think a lot of the issues were due to me not really knowing what I'm doing. Also, I recognize that it's a demo and not the ironed-out final... Czar's thoughts reinforce that, so I'm not worried that I won't be as happy with the game as I thought. Seems like a lot of the appeal is watching how the different players and teams react to matchups, etc. and we don't get much of that at all in an 8-minute game with the same 2 teams and few subs. The core mechanics seem very good and it definitely forces you to run an offense rather than just dribble your way to the rack. Gonna spend some more time with it this afternoon, but probably won't be able to capture and psot anything until very late tonight or tomorrow. If you like my work I appreciate any help: https://www.paypal.me/s3anbarkl3yComment

Re: NBA Live 10 Demo Available, Post Impressions Here (360)
With limited time on the demo…I definitely like the LOOK and feel of the game. As noted the players all feel a bit different and that’s easy to see from the moment a player has the ball in his hands. Smooth and responsive are the words that immediately come to mind regarding player movements.
One area I’m very pleased with is the BASELINE EXPLOIT has been fixed. I tried it several times and even the animation is perfect causing the player to go out of bounds or get the rock stolen when forcing a play to the baseline. What that immediately tells me is that not only did the devs work on offense they worked on Defense too. It also tells me beluba is on his game because he told us the exploit is gone and now it is. Not just lip service but words backing up the product which is not always true for EA.
<O
I can’t really start breaking down the gameplay but from the reps I had early this morning its feeling like a “THINKING MAN’S” basketball game…The court spacing and player movement are just about perfect. Defensively though I have a little concern about not being able to body up on players but I think it will simply take some time to adjust to how we can play better defense with the new tools they have given us. The small time I spent in a zone (2-3) I was very happy with the results. The close out D looks and feels right as well. I’m really looking forward to getting into the lab with this game and breaking down all the subtle nuances to make a great sim hoop experience. It should be fun.
<O
Overall I’d say for the time being its time to “Believe the Hype” because my worst fear was the game would not live up to the early hype but so far this demo is very good…and I mean very good in a enthusiastic way. Great job EA!!Comment

Re: NBA Live 10 Demo Available, Post Impressions Here (360)
I really think they need to do something else other than that horrible RS up "hands up" pose. That's been in basketball games for years and does absolutely nothing aside from plant your feet so your man leaves you in the dust. Really wish they would've made that a moving contest kind of thing where you're just bring active and defending against the pull-up.Send your Midnight Release weirdo pics/videos to my new website: http://www.peopleofmidnightreleases.com!Comment
