RIP Famous People Thread

This is the thread for your RIPs for people who you feel are pretty famous, but maybe don't deserve a full thread.

RIP Ron Popeil. I think I've wanted a Ronco grill most of my life.

RIP Dusty Hill, half of the creepy beard guys who scared me as a kid on MTV.

JPhillips 07-28-2021 09:35 PM

How did you post that without a mention of the Popeil Pocket Fisherman?

edit: Dusty Hill was awesome. I highly recommend the ZZ Top documentary on Netflix, even if you aren't really a fan of the band.

Ksyrup 07-29-2021 07:25 AM

This month has sucked for musician deaths. Jordy Jordison (Slipknot), Mike Howe (Metal Church), Robby Steinhardt (Kansas), Jeff LeBar and Gary Corbett (Cinderella), Biz Markie, Dusty Hill.

Brian Swartz 07-29-2021 09:28 PM

Carl Levin, a Senator from Michigan for 36 years until 2015, has departed this mortal coil. He was 87.

Atocep 08-07-2021 10:49 PM

RIP Trevor Moore of The Whitest Kids you Know fame.

JonInMiddleGA 08-08-2021 05:42 AM

Markie Post, gone at 70.

I'd rank her quite high on the list of fetching TV stars (circa Night Court) in her heyday.

Rest in peace.

Correct is right. Damn, I think that leave Roz, Dan and Bull left from the main cast, right?

miami_fan 08-08-2021 07:01 AM

RIP Coach. Even as a Canes fan, there is no doubt that you were one of the best to do it and was one of the best characters in the game.

I was kind of wondering what Marsha Warfield was up to with all this sad Night Court news - she's wrapping up a stretch of two standup shows a night at the Rio in Vegas tonight.

I watched some of her standup in the mid-80s on Youtube once, she was definitely doing some interesting stuff. It was "adult content" without being that raunchy style of standup - just talking frankly about sex, drugs, etc.

She was playing the mother of the black paramedic/firefighter (can't remember her name right now) last season on 911. Surprised the hell out of me when she showed up.

Yes, I remember her stand-up back then. Similar to how raunchy Bob Saget was before Full House.

RIP Sean Lock… genuinely one of the funniest and uniquely British comedians around. Seems like despite his on stage persona an absolutely genuine person who was loved by all, so this one hits really hard today.

Charlie Watts dead at 80. I knew something was up when he couldn't go on the new tour.

Oh wow.

We actually got to someone famous. RIP to a legend.

BYU 14 08-24-2021 12:20 PM

Damn, I appreciated the Stones much more in recent years as I got into a lot of their music that didn't see the most airplay. Charlie was their backbone with is steady consistent drumming. R.I.P

And the irony of probably the least indulgent of the classic core lineup being the first to go.

Ksyrup 08-24-2021 12:24 PM

Willard Scott passes away at 87. I met him years ago. When he saw my bald head, he immediately grabbed me, put the top of our heads together and said "look, it's a butt!" Very funny man, who will be missed.

JPhillips 09-04-2021 06:50 PM

I would have thought he was older. It seemed like he was an old man thirty years ago.

I mean he really ought to have his own thread. He was Bozo the Clown, a show I used to watch in syndication at my babysitters, and he created the first Ronald McDonald (although that one wad scary af).

It's a shame he didn't make 100, think if all those birthdays he celebrated and read on the air over the years. He was exceptionally entertaining and weirdly a big part of my childhood. My mom watched Today, every day, as we didn't have cable, and I watched it during my latchkey summers at home. I remember when he became the fulltime Today show weatherman. He was quite the man. RIP Willard

Reports citing police sources say it was a heroin overdose.

JPhillips 09-06-2021 05:18 PM

Unfortunately, that's no surprise. He battled addictions all his life.

If you haven't seen his 'Daddy's tools' monologue from Boardwalk Empire, you should.

Crazy that he kept that private all that time. :(

molson 09-14-2021 01:52 PM

He was prolific on twitter until going silent in July. Surprised I hadn't read about anyone wondering if he was OK, like had with Chadwick Boseman. I know he was pretty active doing stand-up in small venues during the pandemic.

cuervo72 09-14-2021 01:55 PM

Shit.

Ksyrup 09-14-2021 01:58 PM

Man that sucks. I followed/unfollowed him often on Twitter. I really don't care about poker or golf and at times, he could fill a Twitter feed on his own.

I really grew to appreciate his stand-up listening to the comedy channels on SXM. Ironically, given that he came from SNL, I found much of his skit stuff that I heard to be pretty crappy. Same with Sandler and the lot.

I always loved this bit:

molson 09-14-2021 01:58 PM

Only works if you can read them in Norm's voice, but these were some of my favorites.

"While in the hospital, Michael Jackson had his room specially decorated with two huge photos of Shirley Temple. But please don’t get the wrong idea, Michael Jackson is a homosexual pedophile."

"The nation is still reeling Thursday’s bombshell announcement that Lisa Marie Presley has filed for divorce from Michael Jackson. According to friends the two were never a good match. She’s more the stay at home type while he’s more of a homosexual pedophile."

"At the Simpson civil trial this week, O.J. Simpson and Fred Goldman got into an explosive shouting match. Mr. Goldman belted at O.J., "don't give me that damn look" and O.J. shouted back "I wasn't even looking at you, you're just mad because I killed your son"

"In a brilliant move during closing arguments, Simpson attorney Johnnie Cochran put on the knit cap prosecutors say O.J. wore the night he committed the murders. Although O.J. may have hurt his case when he suddenly blurted out 'Hey, hey, easy with that, that's my lucky stabbing hat!'"

This one is a local celebrity. Jovita Moore passed away, three months after brain cancer surgery. She was the anchor on WBS, which has many times during her tenure been the highest rated local news cast in the country. Her and Justin Farmer were the last duo of local anchors that I really made time to watch. She was 52, my age that makes it all the more hit home.

It's really good. Not a memoir in any real sense. But if you like his comedy, I think you will like it. It is hard to classify, but I guess I'd say it is like an extended comedy bit. That undersells it a bit b/c it's also got some pathos to it. It was nice to read it though and remember some Norm.
