RIP Famous People Thread
This is the thread for your RIPs for people who you feel are pretty famous, but maybe don't deserve a full thread.
RIP Ron Popeil. I think I've wanted a Ronco grill most of my life. RIP Dusty Hill, half of the creepy beard guys who scared me as a kid on MTV. |
How did you post that without a mention of the Popeil Pocket Fisherman?
edit: Dusty Hill was awesome. I highly recommend the ZZ Top documentary on Netflix, even if you aren't really a fan of the band. |
This month has sucked for musician deaths. Jordy Jordison (Slipknot), Mike Howe (Metal Church), Robby Steinhardt (Kansas), Jeff LeBar and Gary Corbett (Cinderella), Biz Markie, Dusty Hill.
|
Carl Levin, a Senator from Michigan for 36 years until 2015, has departed this mortal coil. He was 87.
|
RIP Trevor Moore of The Whitest Kids you Know fame.
|
Markie Post, gone at 70.
I'd rank her quite high on the list of fetching TV stars (circa Night Court) in her heyday. Rest in peace. |
Quote:
Correct is right. Damn, I think that leave Roz, Dan and Bull left from the main cast, right? |
RIP Coach. Even as a Canes fan, there is no doubt that you were one of the best to do it and was one of the best characters in the game.
Longtime Florida State football coach Bobby Bowden dies at 91 |
Hard morning to hear those two gone. RIP Coach and Markie

Rough couple months for people named Markie
|
shit and we just lost Mac a month ago. :(
|
I was kind of wondering what Marsha Warfield was up to with all this sad Night Court news - she's wrapping up a stretch of two standup shows a night at the Rio in Vegas tonight.
I watched some of her standup in the mid-80s on Youtube once, she was definitely doing some interesting stuff. It was "adult content" without being that raunchy style of standup - just talking frankly about sex, drugs, etc. |
Quote:
She was playing the mother of the black paramedic/firefighter (can't remember her name right now) last season on 911. Surprised the hell out of me when she showed up. |
Today's RIP is Nanci Griffith. Great voice back in the day but no more.
|
Quote:
Yes, I remember her stand-up back then. Similar to how raunchy Bob Saget was before Full House. |
RIP Sean Lock… genuinely one of the funniest and uniquely British comedians around. Seems like despite his on stage persona an absolutely genuine person who was loved by all, so this one hits really hard today.
|
Quote:
Was just coming on to post something similar. One of my favourite TV moments was ‘Carrot In A Box’, literally makes me cry :D |
Tiger catching legend Bill Freehand passed away...
|
Sonny Chiba has died from covid related pneumonia.
|
|
I was saddened by Sean Lock's passing, knew he'd been ill but thought he'd looked better recently, thought he was on a road to recovery.
Havent been as saddened by a celeb kicking it since Rik Mayall and David Bowie. |
RIP Eric Wagner, former singer of doom metal band Trouble and current singer of The Skull. Effing Covid.
|
Getting sick of updating this thread with musicians.
Charlie Watts dead at 80. I knew something was up when he couldn't go on the new tour. |
Oh wow.
We actually got to someone famous. RIP to a legend. |
Damn, I appreciated the Stones much more in recent years as I got into a lot of their music that didn't see the most airplay. Charlie was their backbone with is steady consistent drumming. R.I.P
And the irony of probably the least indulgent of the classic core lineup being the first to go. |
I can actually picture this in my mind's eye!
|
Former Bucs first-round draft pick Keith McCants dies at 53
I remember him as a Alabama and Bucs linebacker. I showed his picture to my wife and she remembered him from the 30 for 30 documentary Broke. RIP. |
Willard Scott passes away at 87. I met him years ago. When he saw my bald head, he immediately grabbed me, put the top of our heads together and said "look, it's a butt!" Very funny man, who will be missed.
|
I would have thought he was older. It seemed like he was an old man thirty years ago.
|
Quote:
I mean he really ought to have his own thread. He was Bozo the Clown, a show I used to watch in syndication at my babysitters, and he created the first Ronald McDonald (although that one wad scary af). It's a shame he didn't make 100, think if all those birthdays he celebrated and read on the air over the years. He was exceptionally entertaining and weirdly a big part of my childhood. My mom watched Today, every day, as we didn't have cable, and I watched it during my latchkey summers at home. I remember when he became the fulltime Today show weatherman. He was quite the man. RIP Willard |
FUCK
Seeing reports that Micheal K. Williams was found dead in his apartment. Watch out afterlife, Omar comin. |
Man.
|
Quote:
Reports citing police sources say it was a heroin overdose. |
Unfortunately, that's no surprise. He battled addictions all his life.
If you haven't seen his 'Daddy's tools' monologue from Boardwalk Empire, you should. |
I had feeling it would be an overdose. Man, that sucks.

SHIT! I was JUST LOOKING UP Willard Scott because I forgot his name last week because I was trying to remember the source of the "Troy and Abed in the Morning" bit from Community.
I finally found the info. And it said he was still alive. I was surprised at that....I think I jinxed him :( |
Quote:
He was outstanding in that show and addiction sucks! R.I.P |
Always loved the scene between these two.

Still not over this one. Felt just like I did when Heath Ledger died (which was the first celebrity death to devastate me). |
Damn, this one stings more than most for me, Norm McDonald was such a subtle comic genius and has dry delivery accentuated that style so well.
Norm Macdonald Dies: Influential Comedian & Former ‘SNL’ Weekend Update Anchor Was 61 One of my favs |
Nine-year cancer battle, damn.
|
Quote:
Crazy that he kept that private all that time. :( |
He was prolific on twitter until going silent in July. Surprised I hadn't read about anyone wondering if he was OK, like had with Chadwick Boseman. I know he was pretty active doing stand-up in small venues during the pandemic.
|
Shit.
|
Man that sucks. I followed/unfollowed him often on Twitter. I really don't care about poker or golf and at times, he could fill a Twitter feed on his own.
I really grew to appreciate his stand-up listening to the comedy channels on SXM. Ironically, given that he came from SNL, I found much of his skit stuff that I heard to be pretty crappy. Same with Sandler and the lot. I always loved this bit: |
He's talked a couple of times on podcasts in the last few years about how if he had some fatal disease he'd never tell anyone.
|
One of the funniest human beings on the planet.
|
|
I still remember some of his standup bits from MTV's Half Hour Comedy Hour, especially the bit about being on The Dating game and talking about his date as if she were a popsicle. "First, I take off her wrapper, if you know what I mean..."
|
:(

My favorite running gag ever
|
Only works if you can read them in Norm's voice, but these were some of my favorites.
"While in the hospital, Michael Jackson had his room specially decorated with two huge photos of Shirley Temple. But please don’t get the wrong idea, Michael Jackson is a homosexual pedophile." "The nation is still reeling Thursday’s bombshell announcement that Lisa Marie Presley has filed for divorce from Michael Jackson. According to friends the two were never a good match. She’s more the stay at home type while he’s more of a homosexual pedophile." "At the Simpson civil trial this week, O.J. Simpson and Fred Goldman got into an explosive shouting match. Mr. Goldman belted at O.J., "don't give me that damn look" and O.J. shouted back "I wasn't even looking at you, you're just mad because I killed your son" "In a brilliant move during closing arguments, Simpson attorney Johnnie Cochran put on the knit cap prosecutors say O.J. wore the night he committed the murders. Although O.J. may have hurt his case when he suddenly blurted out 'Hey, hey, easy with that, that's my lucky stabbing hat!'" |

The best. |
|
His all-clean roast routine was brilliant.

This one hurts. Didn’t realize he was ill and far too young. The Conan with Courtney Thorne-Smith was the first thing I thought of when I heard.
RIP Norm. |

Well damn :(
Rest in peace Willie Garson Dead: 'Sex and the City' 'White Collar' Dies at 57 - Variety |
Just saw that. Really young.
|
The episode of "Family Guy" where Norm MacDonald plays Death is on FXX right now. Great episode. Great casting of Norm. "Look, I caught FloJo. You don't think I can't catch you?"
|
darn i liked willie

He was so good on Newhart. A show ahead of its time. |

he was so good in bosom buddies . a show ahead of its time |
This one is a local celebrity. Jovita Moore passed away, three months after brain cancer surgery. She was the anchor on WBS, which has many times during her tenure been the highest rated local news cast in the country. Her and Justin Farmer were the last duo of local anchors that I really made time to watch. She was 52, my age that makes it all the more hit home.
|
I saw her story a few weeks back, very sad. Looks like she was beloved there.
|
Having watched the E60 profile with Ernie and Michael, this news is incredibly heartbreaking.
RIP Michael. Michael Johnson, son of broadcaster Ernie Johnson, dies at 33 |
https://www.cnn.com/2021/12/04/polit...ers/index.html
This one hit me pretty hard. The opportunity to talk to some of the guys and hear what they say and not say about war has affected me over the years. This has really been the case since I retired. RIP Sir. |
Bob Dole died.
|
Al Unser dies yesterday at the age of 82
|
A giant.
|
what i wouldn't give to have a mind as agile as this, to come up with such a framing...
|
I guess I know who will open my 2022, reading-wise. The question is will it be Slouching Toward Bethlehem or Play It As It Lays.

Richard Marcinko, first commanding officer of SEAL Team Six, dies
https://www.navytimes.com/breaking-n...team-six-dies/ Larger than life figure, a legit hero (a Silver Star and 4 Bronze Stars), a highly entertaining writer and storyteller that never met an apple cart he wasn't willing to upset. |
|
TMZ is reporting Betty White died.
When I saw they were doing some big 100th birthday show, I commented to my wife that that was the kiss of death. I would have told them hell no. |
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Fuck.... If this is true...it needs it's own thread. |
It's true. At least, more than TMZ is reporting it.
|
Quote:
I said the same thing. I can't imagine all of the anticipation/setup/stress for that production was something you want to put a 100 year-old person through. |
Fuck you, 2021.
|
Man, that is unbelievably sad, America's Grandmother :(
And yes, having also lost my cousin this morning, fuck you 2021 |
RIP Dan Reeves
|
Not sure if he counts as famous or just minor internet 15 minutes famous, but Jesse Stewart died last month.
14 million views, kicked off a prospective music career, but dead of an overdose at 31. |
Sidney Poitier has assumed room temperature. He was 94.
|
A bit belated, but Norm's death got me to get his book for Christmas, which I just read.
It's really good. Not a memoir in any real sense. But if you like his comedy, I think you will like it. It is hard to classify, but I guess I'd say it is like an extended comedy bit. That undersells it a bit b/c it's also got some pathos to it. It was nice to read it though and remember some Norm. |
RIP Mr Tibbs.
|
|
That is unreal. OnIy 65. He was in a hotel room, and had been on tour. This is just sad.

Just saw. Wow.
|
It can't be true that they announced the breaking news of Saget's passing during American's Funniest Home Videos, can it?
|
I missed this one until I saw it while looking up something else today, Archbishop Desmond Tutu died December 26th last year
