Someone should write a white paper on it.

dubb93 05-12-2025 12:57 PM

I’m seeing headlines saying that Trump got a big win with the China trade deal. What exactly did he win? The ability to lower his own tariff? I honestly don’t understand what Trump won here. Is this like shooting your self in the left foot but claiming victory because you didn’t shoot yourself in the right foot too?

dubb93 05-12-2025 12:59 PM

Some products are already more expensive and if I know anything about big companies it that they will always walk back those price increases when the market allows it. Right?

Ksyrup 05-12-2025 01:15 PM

He's soooooo close!

Mark Waters says sales at his Odessa, Texas, tools business, which he describes as a “Home Depot for the oilfields,” are down about 10 percent. He does not regret voting for Trump, saying he is willing to take a personal hit to support the president’s agenda.

But he said it is ironic that over the decades he has made a lot more money when the party he despises is in power.

“The oil business has thrived under Democratic leadership despite them being true haters of all things fossil,” Waters said. “For whatever reason, I made millions of dollars under Clinton. Then I made even more under Obama and Biden. I have never had a solid explanation.”

Trump promised U.S. dominance. Instead, energy companies are faltering.

It's also just a 90 day pause so no one is lowering prices for 90 days hoping for a deal. They'll wait for something more permanent.

So I guess the factories aren't coming back and the tariffs won't replace the income tax?

I for one, am shocked I tell you.

Get ready for our tech dystopia. The GOP has inserted language into the reconciliation bill that would make it illegal for any state to regulate AI in any way for 10 years.

I'm ready to accept our AI overlords. Can't be worse than the human ones.

I can’t remember a time in my lifetime where existing tech got more expensive but NVIDIA GPUs are up 5-15% MSRP and XBoxes are up, what, 30%?

It's hard to find a 9800x3D under $500 right now and it had pushed up to near $600 a couple weeks ago.

Great timing for all of us who have to replace aging computers that don't qualify for Windows 11 (when W10 goes out of support in October).

Pretty sure you can bypass any requirements by creating a custom install iso with Rufus (or similar)

I like that the Qatari jet revolt from MAGA isn't about the gross abuse of the office, but that it's from brown people.

No, not any downsides as far as I’m aware. A TPM 1.2 chip is required (versus the 2.0 the upgrade tries to force upon you) though, but most should have that already.

Trump's Saudi speech was actually not bad. I mean you can question the morality but at least it was somewhat honest about America and its handling of the Middle East.

Yeah, we have been shit in the Middle East forever. The problem is he is pretty schizophrenic about the Middle East himself, and it really seems his main goal is to personally pull as much money out there as he can.

dubb93 05-14-2025 05:24 PM

Not Trump related but the stuff coming out about Biden’s handlers having no faith he could respond to a middle of the night emergency and intentionally keeping cabinet members away from him so they wouldn’t realize how demented he was should result in charges being filed.

Made-up headline / True Phenomenon?:
“98% of MAGA identifiers approve of the way Trump is mishandling the economy.”

Not that it matters since performative cosplay and adherence to lies/beliefs vastly outweigh the truth/reality, but...

Quote:

‘I WAS HOPING FOR MORE EASY WINS’: Here’s the foundational myth on which DOGE is founded: The federal government is such a bloated and inefficient beast, so choked by complacent ne’er-do-wells and fraudsters skimming off the top, that all you need to do is throw a few Silicon Valley gurus into the mix to realize massive savings.

And here’s one of those gurus, Gumroad founder Sahil Lavingia, whom DOGE has had moonlighting at the Department of Veterans Affairs, telling Fast Company how surprised he has been that he’s found so little to cut, “Honestly,” Lavingia said, “it’s kind of fine—because the government works. It’s not as inefficient as I was expecting, to be honest. I was hoping for more easy wins.”

If only people had been saying this very thing from the start. As I've said countless times on here, the fraud and waste aren't in the areas most people think they are and it's not as widespread as the right makes it out to be.

A lot of the waste is because of antiquated systems. It requires massive amounts of resources to update and deploy new systems throughout these agencies. My site was the first to deploy MHS Genesis to replace AHLTA/CHCS and it was a nightmare.

You also see vendors take advantage of government contracts, especially when it comes to IT. We have departments in the hospital that will try to purchase their own computers for specific needs and if it doesn't go through my IT department then these companies (Dell, HP, etc) will try to sell them extra stuff they don't need to drive up the cost.

Most actual waste comes from bad contracts. You'll see senior officers and high level civilians push certain companies for a contract and then once they get out of the military they're working for that company. You also see companies that are just in over their heads because they weren't prepared for the scope of supporting a large hospital or agency. They won the contract legitimately but just do a bad job and have to be replaced and the contract gets rebid.

Lathum 05-15-2025 11:39 AM

But I was told China would pay the tariffs?

Walmart says higher prices could hit this month due to tariffs

1000% this, which is also why the DOGE kiddies couldn't find it.

Also, his comment at the end of his Springsteen rant sounds an awful lot like he's suggesting Bruce could or should be 86'd:

“This dried out ‘prune’ of a rocker (his skin is all atrophied!) ought to KEEP HIS MOUTH SHUT until he gets back into the Country, that’s just ‘standard fare.’ Then we’ll all see how it goes for him!”

Trump telling Walmart to eat the tariffs. Lol buddy. That’s not how this works

Ksyrup 05-17-2025 01:01 PM

If Wal-Mart should "eat the tariffs" as Trump says, then that's an acknowledgement of what we all have known and has been repeatedly said, right? We (whether our companies or consumers) pay the tariffs, not the other countries. Just another twist of pretzel logic.
