Two parts to that. One, generally 3 runways are in use for landing and 2 for takeoff. It's a huge airport and some of the runways are a long way from the terminal. Many of the taxi routes are specific to avoid crossing any runway where an aircraft is taking off from to mitigate any potential conflict. Also to avoid conflict while crossing any runway where another plane is landing. It ends up a lot like the old game of centipede where you keep moving ever growing lines to navigate without hitting anything.



The second part is that they've created regular taxi in and out routing from and to those runways, and because of the volume of traffic through Ohare, these routes tend to be quite long and you frequently find yourself going the opposite direction from where you'll end up at. It's again, for ease of control, safety and potential conflict and helps guard against potential conflict when something happens like a plane can't taxi to the gate right away, or a passenger needs to pee and the plane has to stop, or you haven't gotten your weight and balance yet and need to get out of line and wait for it.




I was literally in Greenville for the first time in ages this week on a long layover. Really enjoyed it. We used to joke about it being quicker to drive from New York to Boston than it is to go to the airport, go through security, wait, get on the plane, wait, wait some more, fly for an hour, and the land and get off. Frequently flights that are very close in distance are over-blocked because it's easier for ATC to hold planes on the ground rather than let them take off and burn fuel holding and have them divert. It's a much better process for the entire operation. So those close in flights take that into consideration using historic data to maintain the flight schedule.



And yes, that means that sometimes we get out faster, and the gate isn't available when we land. Some gates only have a couple minutes in between departures and arrivals. They are all scheduled on a massive computer that has to look at usage all day. On a good day it works great, on a bad day, when things back up, it can go south.
