Yes, frequently. Two parts to that. One, generally 3 runways are in use for landing and 2 for takeoff. It's a huge airport and some of the runways are a long way from the terminal. Many of the taxi routes are specific to avoid crossing any runway where an aircraft is taking off from to mitigate any potential conflict. Also to avoid conflict while crossing any runway where another plane is landing. It ends up a lot like the old game of centipede where you keep moving ever growing lines to navigate without hitting anything. The second part is that they've created regular taxi in and out routing from and to those runways, and because of the volume of traffic through Ohare, these routes tend to be quite long and you frequently find yourself going the opposite direction from where you'll end up at. It's again, for ease of control, safety and potential conflict and helps guard against potential conflict when something happens like a plane can't taxi to the gate right away, or a passenger needs to pee and the plane has to stop, or you haven't gotten your weight and balance yet and need to get out of line and wait for it. I was literally in Greenville for the first time in ages this week on a long layover. Really enjoyed it. We used to joke about it being quicker to drive from New York to Boston than it is to go to the airport, go through security, wait, get on the plane, wait, wait some more, fly for an hour, and the land and get off. Frequently flights that are very close in distance are over-blocked because it's easier for ATC to hold planes on the ground rather than let them take off and burn fuel holding and have them divert. It's a much better process for the entire operation. So those close in flights take that into consideration using historic data to maintain the flight schedule. And yes, that means that sometimes we get out faster, and the gate isn't available when we land. Some gates only have a couple minutes in between departures and arrivals. They are all scheduled on a massive computer that has to look at usage all day. On a good day it works great, on a bad day, when things back up, it can go south. |
Allison Riggs officially wins her seat on the NC Supreme Court after Jefferson finally concedes following his loss at the federal appeals level.
It's kind of scary how close this came to being a blatantly stolen election. |
Is it faster for people to fly private than to drive? Taking away the cool factor, since we moved closer to the airport I'll sometimes check flight aware and I see tons of planes flying to CTL, ATL, Columbia... I don't even know how many I saw flying to Augusta during the Masters. I know security theater is different, but is the total flight package really faster than driving 90 minutes?

Money is time, and when you have money, the time becomes a necessity. At the wealth point for some people it's nothing more than a high end Uber. |
Waiting in the corral to run my marathon in Cincinnati on Sunday, I struck up a conversation with a guy who works for American Airlines. He lives north of Daytona Beach and works in Dallas (I couldn't tell if he actually commutes weekly, or that's just where his home office is). He said he does pilot scheduling, calculating airplane weight, and all sorts of similar logistics planning for American and loves it. He was an interesting guy - former Marine, used to weigh 400 pounds, now raises money for charities and flies around the world running marathons.

When does Laura Loomer get an office at the White House? She killed the surgeon general pick. It was an awful choice to begin with, but it's not like someone better is the replacement.

You'd think Dems could make some hay out of 3 F/A 18s falling into the Red Sea but they don't even try.

What messaging angle do you think they should take on this one? |
Someone like Warner or Coons or Duckworth should just beat the hell out of Hegseth and Trump for incompetence and endagering Navy personnel.

We are about to buy a car. I told my wife we need to buy it asap and she wants to wait until memorial Day when they normally have deals. They aren't having deals this year.

Canada exports to other countries have increased by 23% so far this year. Disengaging trade from the USA. Not a big deal, since they don't need anything from Canada anyways, as Trump has said a million times.

Price of used cars are skyrocketing too if you think that's a way to get around the tariffs.

Trump pulls Ed Martin from consideration as US attorney for DC. Then thinks "how can I make a nomination that would be even worse? Oh, I know...."

Bad time to be a kid for a variety of reasons but today added a new one. Trump threatened Mattel with a 100% tariff on their products because the CEO said they can't afford to make toys in the United States.

He also referred to them as a country. When asked about dock workers and truck drivers being worried about their jobs because ports have lost half of their business Trump said it's a good thing the ports are empty because it means we're not losing money. |
For people who hate the commies, they sure love a centrally planned economy these days.

So, the people who ignored the positive macro-economic factors to vote for Trump because they, personally, were hurting, are supposed to... ignore their personal situations because Trump says this is good from a macro-economic perspective? Do I have that right? |
One of the underreported stories about some of the officials is that they signed up to cosplay and have no clue how to actually do the job. Like part of the gig is you have to come up with a budget for Congress to look over.

I honestly think history will look back at this period and the people who will be cast in the worst light are the GOP lawmakers who let this happen when majority of them absolutely know better.

So are we about to legit try to treat everyone with autism for mercury poisoning after whatever report he comes up with is released? Who owns the company that makes that drug?
|
Hear me out. Everyone in the administration has to take a toxicology test and we get to bet on it at Draft Kings. What's Jeannine Pirro taking? What's Hegseth's blood alcohol level? Was Patel on cocaine at that hearong or another drug? Prop bets on who get cirrhosis first. Proceeds go to pay down national debt.
|
Maybe we should sell this plane Trump is getting gifted to help pay down debt instead of adding to the debt by bringing it to Air Force One standards only to have it go with Trump when he leaves office.
