I also saw they are re-opening Alcatraz. And if you've ever taken the tour of it, that's going to be a tough one to pull off.

We have our own Vancouver they could use.

I mean, it's kind of a national park of sorts, right? There won't be enough staffing to run tours anymore. Might as well get some use out of it.

Atocep 05-04-2025 07:03 PM

This presidency is proof we live in a simulation and it requires patching.

The good news is we are going to have low gas prices soon. There is also a good bit of bad news associated with this but I am trying not to be too negative.

How do you even tariff a movie? They get shot all around the world for various reasons.

GrantDawg 05-04-2025 08:42 PM

I really don't know. Just watched Thunderbolts, which was filmed in Georgia, Ontario, New York, Utah and Malaysia. Do they tax based on the percentage filmed outside the US? Not tax since primary filming was in Georgia (one of the last MCU btw. They have moved most filming to the UK)?

He’s literally just hit spaghetti westerns chronologically and he’s pissed he’s about to lose Clint Eastwood to Europe.

Not to mention all those foreign actors stealing the jobs from hard working Trump voters!

All indoor movie scenes must be filmed at Mar-a-Lago.

You just do. You find a company making a movie, tell them "you owe me money", find something to bully them about, until they make a deal for how much they are willing to pay.

JPhillips 05-05-2025 09:54 AM

How do you even define movie? Is Youtube supposed to pay for each video from a foreign country?

dubb93 05-05-2025 10:38 AM

Who would pay the tariff though? Would it be the distribution company, whoever made the movie, or the consumer buying the ticket?

Ghost Econ 05-05-2025 01:00 PM

Yes

GrantDawg 05-05-2025 01:47 PM

Wow. I thought for sure he was a shoe-in to run and most likely win. He must be eyeing a Presidential run, That makes MTG the Republican front-runner, and gives Osoff a chance to hold the seat.

I think it has more to do with Ossof looking strong in polls and Kemp seeing the writing on the wall in 2026. At this rate, it's going to be a bloodbath for Republicans at the midterm.

JPhillips 05-05-2025 05:06 PM

If Kemp has presidential aspirations there's nothing good to be gained by being a GOP Senator under Trump, either. If he loses he has that problem, but if he wins he has to do whatever Trump says or be torn down by MAGA.

GrantDawg 05-05-2025 05:50 PM

I just don't see Kemp winning a Presidential nomination. He had a real shot at the Senate. There should be a blood letting for Republicans during the midterms, but Kemp is very popular in Georgia, not overly tied to the MAGA movement so he plays well with the suburban Republicans, and Georgia is still a Red state.

JPhillips 05-05-2025 05:57 PM

It does seem like a small needle to thread. If Trum is a disaster it's hard to see a GOP president in 2028 and if Trump is popular it's hard to see anyone other than Trump's hand picked successor being the nominee.

But part of the personality of presidential candidates is the belief that they are the only one who can really save the party/country.

Mota 05-05-2025 07:36 PM

JD Vance is a void of charisma though. If he tries to repeat the same thing that Trump repeats, people will just think he's a moron.

Danny 05-05-2025 07:44 PM

JD is the guywho sucks up non stop to the big guy but gets looked over the promotion when it comes down to it.

I think it depends on how the next 2 years play out. If we enter a deep recession with high inflation due to the tariffs, shit is going to hit the fan. I just think anyone with an R will have an uphill battle.

His other issue is the primary. He likely wins that but he's going to be going up against a bunch of MAGA folks in gimp suits. It's going to be very tough to trash Trump's policies which he'll need to do while winning that primary. And even if he does win it, does he damage himself so much with MAGA that he gets whooped in the general? Just seems like a lot can go wrong if you have bigger aspirations.

Also not fully sure Georgia is a red state. Biden won in 2020, they have 2 Dem Senators. It feels like it's heading the direction of Virginia as the suburbs grow and remember that Kemp won because Dems kept running Abrams who is fucking terrible.

Thomkal 05-05-2025 08:55 PM

Looks like that NC Supreme Court election may finally be over. Judge ordered the NC Board of Elections to give the Democrat a 734 vote victory and rejected all of the Republican candidates challenges though he gave him a week to appeal

If you read the quote, he's asking for tax credits, which is what everybody is using to encourage development in their area. What's wrong with that?

So, he is just straight MAGA now?

Ksyrup 05-06-2025 07:21 AM

By the time we get to 2027 campaign season, a Newsom/Whitmer ticket is going to give Vance/Whomever a serious run for their MAGA votes.

Lathum 05-06-2025 07:43 AM

Just listened to an interview with a maritime shipping expert who basically said the shit is gonna hit the fan with the supply chain in the next few weeks. Goods are typically ordered 5-6 weeks out so we have been getting by with goods already here or were on the way and now the chain has basically stopped.

I wouldn't underestimate the guy. It wasn't so long ago that he was making sweet love to his couch. Now he's one heartbeat (of a 78 year old) away from being one of the most powerful people on the planet.

Atocep 05-06-2025 11:31 AM

Dems had a hell of a weekend in local election across Texas. They flipped mayors, school boards, etc across the state and in conservative strongholds like Collin county (where my wife is from).

People are over culture wars, book bannings, and extremism. Mid terms are going to be ugly.

The Trump Presidency 2.0

I disagree

I don’t think that they’re over them at all

I think that they were caught off guard by how angry and acidic the opposition was in trying to discriminate, control, and hurt people who are a little different

Most don’t have a strong opinion about moving illegal aliens from the country as long as there’s not a heart string pulling narrative around it. I mean if it’s just a guy in a room going to work for Tyson they don’t care but if there’s a story like a wife being kicked out and separated from her husband and kid, they hate that.

Point is, they were fairly neutral to this stuff until they realized what it looked like to be neutral… now, they might be really really busy, too busy to go to protests and stuff, but when they go to the ballot for one hour every couple of years, they vote. They show just how pissed they are but then they go home and try to keep the house in order

I think theres some truth to that. A lot of people wanted this anti DEI stuff, trans bans, tougher immigration etc but they wanted the rest of their life to continue as normal and without additional stress. If Trump had just focused on those things (itd still be awful) but hed still have strong support.

GrantDawg 05-06-2025 01:16 PM

But he ran on those things to get rich in the other things.

I think people also don't like feeling like they were duped or lied to. A ton of low information voters chose him because he ran on a platform of lowering prices and inflation and clearly that hasn't happened despite what they keep saying.

Imagine if he campaigned on short term suffering, tanking the stock market, and only buying 2 dolls and 5 pencils that will cost more.

And the thing is, if he wanted to promote sacrifice, he had his chance during Covid to make that his thing. He could have literally said this in 2020 and would have been more popular, an opportunity that probably only FDR and maybe W could have had, at least in the last 100 years, and he completely passed it up.

This is true also. I think both of those groups exist the hope is more and more will be willing to admit they were wrong (they may already know in their head).

Newark airport is a total mess. My wife travels 3-4 weeks of the month th and it’s gotten progressively worse.

Maybe pilotman can chime in. I know there is a shortage of air traffic controllers. I realize it would be a process but why can’t we incorporate that into the military? Would solve the staffing issues and would also give older service members a chance to still serve but not be on a carrier somewhere and be able to settle down. Seems like a win win .

The establishment will always push to the right. There's a reason Harris ran on building the wall and touting Liz Cheney as a voice of reason. Whoever the moderate candidate will be in 2028 will be running on a lot of what Trump ran on in 2024.

There's a major runway repair project that has been on the books for a year at least. It's scheduled to go through the middle of June. There have been staffing issues for well over a year. Many of the ground delays during large storm events are understaffed sectors that cannot handle the shift in aircraft as the weather develops. So sectors get oversaturated and delays start. Right now in Newark, it's early summer-ish but the runway closure of one of the two main use runways is driving all sorts of issues. There's also the problem of concrete. As in, Newark is one of the smallest airports for the amount of traffic that they have. When backups start, real estate becomes a problem. Planes on gates that shouldn't be, planes in small holding areas, or tucked into corners of the airport waiting. It's an accordion effect.

RainMaker 05-06-2025 11:07 PM

Do you ever fly to O'hare? I need to know why my plane taxis for 40 minutes every single time I land there.

Ksyrup 05-07-2025 06:44 AM

I've found that to be an issue recently for me, as well. I don't fly enough to see it as a new normal of traveling, so maybe it's more likely just a run of bad luck, but I've flown on both Delta and American in the last 6-8 months and have run into 3 instances where we landed early and didn't have a gate to immediately park at (makes sense), but then sat for a ridiculous amount of time - well beyond when we would have parked at the gate had we just shown up on time.

The most ridiculous instance of this was a few weeks ago, on a flight from Asheville to Charlotte - like 25 minutes long. We landed early, of course, but then taxiied/sat for just short of 60 minutes waiting for a gate. Almost 2.5 times as long on the ground after landing than the flight itself! I know airplane logistics are incredibly complicated, but find us another MF'n gate, please!

Ghost Econ 05-07-2025 07:53 AM

I did the math the other day and between parking and taxiing that even with the 20 minute flights it's still faster to drive from Greenville to Charlotte or Atlanta. The problem is the flights from GSP with a connection through there is often way cheaper than just straight out of those hubs.

The fact that there still isn't high speed rail options (they have been talking about making Atlanta a high-speed rail hub forever) and the fact that it cost as much or more to take a train to anywhere from here as it does to fly, irks me to no end.
