I'm in the interview process for FAANG (same company and position I had before I left the US in 2021) and anecdotally I can predict it's going to be another tech bloodbath coming. Both the hiring manager and my old boss have basically said they aren't sure if they will get this position over the line as hiring freezes and layoffs are inevitably coming given the way the economy is going to go.
Thankfully I'm the second income in my household and relatively sheltered if I have to go drive Uber for a year but yeah. Some nice filling for the shit sandwich, so much winning. |
Wait till the AI bubble bursts. Still think they have a year or so to milk dummies but that is going to tank so many tech stocks.
|
Well, if they had truthfully marketed AI as a search engine that gets worse faster, the economy would have already collapsed.

We gave management of the strategic oil reserve over to a company that's existed for 5 years, has 3 listed employees, and specializes in buying storage units and we're paying them $1.4 billion. Seems legit.

There are about 1,000 protests planned across the United States for tomorrow for anyone looking to protest the actions of the Trump administration.

America as a country is now a train wreck reality show.

Yes, the perfect time to lower interest rates is right after you did a massively inflationary thing. Can someone with an 8th grade understanding of economics explain this to him?
|
I pass/failed econ in college. I could probably fuck things up slightly less.
|
Yeah, I don't have a ton of econ background but even I know they can't lower interest rates if we have high inflation.
But I guess we see the strategy now. He fucks up the economy and will now make Powell out to be his scapegoat. |

Yes, but that person would have to come from outside of his current administration. |
A GOP president just lit everyone's 401k on fire. If Democrats can't capitalize on this, they deserve to be out of power.
|
The NC court of appeals just stole the SC election by saying 60000 votes need to be removed. There will be an appeal, but the GOP controls the NC Supreme Court as well.

That should be a bigger story. Ending democracy in a state. |
Newsom is a buffoon but this is a sneaky smart strategy if he can get any countries to bite.
|
The problem is why would they? Is California not going to charge the tariff on imports? That seems like a one-sided deal.

The DNC Chair has announce they are creating a "Shadow Cabinet." I'm sure they'll screw it up, but it is a good idea.

I think the strategy would be to put pressure on Trump to remove the tariffs. If you give California an exemption, it's a huge boost to businesses and farmers in the state. It gives them a massive advantage over red state competitors. Take soybeans for example. If you give Illinois an exemption, you just destroy Iowa's farms. Won't take long for voters and politicians to speak up. |
How are they so bad at this?

This is another example why the only way forward is for the party to go. |
Only got this news from work because we work with Fanatics on stuff. But they sent an e-mail that metal based products, which are mostly made in China, are getting a 10%-15% bump due to the tariffs immediately. Already got pushed through their app and the site will be refreshing in a few days. So if you plan to purchase any metal based products from that company, do so quickly on their website.

The US Commerce Sec has already said the quiet words out loud that any manufacturing that moves to the US because of tariffs will be powered by robots and AI, so any thoughts of a rich middle class due to manufacturing returning should be forgotten. The only winners if this happens would be the 4 oligarchs who were on stage with Trump during his inauguration

The government of Lithuania has shown more respect for the US soldiers that died over there than our own president.

Could you imagine if under Biden the market dropped 4,000 points in two day, 4 US soldiers died, and he went golfing? The right would be apoplectic. The hypocrisy never ceases to amaze me. |
I went down to my local hands-off protest today. I couldn't take the crowd for more than an hour, but there were thousands of folks & it was good to see.

Hope they all are getting what they wanted out of a Trump presidency. |

I also went to mine. I got to my city's Hands Off protest/pep rally about 15 minutes late so I spent about 1 hour and 45 minutes at it. There were probably around 1,000 people at the one in Fort Wayne, IN which is fairly Republican. I work remotely so it can feel isolating at times being a Democrat in this area. Luckily everyone in my family is progressive at least. I moved from Louisville a few years ago since my Dad lives in Ft. Wayne. It was uplifting to be around with others who oppose Trump. It was also great to hear a lot of cars, trucks, semi trucks, Amazon delivery vans, and USPS delivery trucks honking in support. |

Same thing they'd get under Harris Glad you threw away an election to support it. |
I didn't go to the Chicago one but had 2 friends who did and they said it was packed with people.

I didn’t throw anything away I voted in my own best interests which everyone should do. Including those fucking idiots who protest voted Trump. The man who described himself as the most pro Israel president ever on the campaign trail. |
No real point in trying to engage me on this much either. At this point I’d like to see them get what the voted for including Trump resorts in Gaza and US Troops on the ground in the West Bank. People should get what they vote for.

That looks like a great turnout. |

This was the biggest protest I've seen in a long time, probably 20-30,000 folks showed up. Great weather most certainly helped, after the usual 6 fall/winter months of grey, rainy days. |
Do you have any restaurant recommendations? Love the city but nothing is open late. I'll be back in a couple months and hopefully catching a Timbers game.

It is both weird and true that despite Portland's restaurant/bar/service culture, practically nothing is, or has ever been open late.I work about a half-mile from the Timbers' stadium, so most of my food knowledge in that immediate area is kinda cheap lunch-centric. In that vein I would recommend the Midtown Beer Garden, which is a pod of 20+ carts & Tokyo Sando in particular. There is a seemingly endless selection of restaurants in Portland, but for more serious eats around that area some of the ones that are worth the hype: Andina Langbaan Ox Kann and a couple more funky/casual personal favorites: Luce Plaza Coyoacan Khun Pic’s Bahn Thai |

Most American cities close early. NYC is the exception not the rule.

I will never understand how lying to support the narrative is acceptable to some even when they’re supposedly Christian’s.
People are sharing this post on Facebook that all of these countries are lining up to negotiate on the tariffs which might be true but I asked him to show any evidence and he couldn’t. So when I said that that’s lying and a sin he said that I was being weird. Weird is calling people out on lying and reminding them that that too is a sin. Strange days indeed. It’s a cult. Nothing matters beyond what dear leader says.

Hell, I have a friend that went to the protest in Salt Lake City, there were 12,000 people there, in conservative AF Utah, including she said, some Republicans. Also a small contingent of Proud Boys, that didn't really cause much disruption since they were vastly outnumbered. |
There are rumors Scott Bessent wants out of the Trump administration because of the tariffs and being forced to support them is destroying his reputation in the financial industry.

His interviews have been a train wreck. You can tell he just wants to blurt out Trump has no clue what he is doing. |
