That's what I said too. My wife said "you're thinking of Jerry Lewis". And you know, she may well be right. |

OH MY GOD, JERRY LEE LEWIS JUST DIED!
YOU BASTARDS! |
In all seriousness, this appears to be another one of those "he's about to go" things that gets passed through the technological grapevine until it's spun for some poor bastard 5 or 6 people in as, "he's dead," at which point the race is on to be the first to report it.
But apparently it's true now. |
Don't panic. Huey Lewis's heart is still beatin'. Not sure whether or not it's in Cleveland...

Fred Hickman, former CNN and TNT sports anchor, has died at age 66
66? Wow. Are Chris Berman and Greg Gumbel the last of those national sports highlights show anchors? |
Wow, that's a name I haven't heard in forever. RIP.

Made me wonder what happened to the other CNN Sports guys. Vince Cellini is only 63 and Van Earl Wright (who always seemed a little too off the cuff for his time) is just 60. Those guys must have only been in their mid-20s when they got famous. |

I love her singing "Songbird."
|
I listened to that album on the way home from work.
I'm sure there's a better quality version of this somewhere - maybe one of the cable channels will air it soon in light of her passing - but this was a fascinating look at all the circumstances surrounding the making of Rumours as well as some of the specific recording techniques and "sausage-making" of how some of the songs were written and recorded. This is broken into 8 parts. I may be thinking of a different show, but this is the one that might have her performing Songbird for the show. Rumours Part 1 - YouTube EDIT - found it, it's at the end of Part 5. |

the most unforgettable name in baseball i have his babeball cards |
I spent my freshman year at a small college in South Carolina and he was HC of another team our baseball team played. We went to the game just to see him. Every time he went to the mound, we all started yelling at the umps to watch him and he had a big smile on his face walking back to the dugout.

He was famous for knowing every way to doctor a ball. That is how he pitched for so many years.

RIP my friend Chris Wilkes. He died of cancer and kidney failure this morning aggressively brought on by a c diff infection. He was an epic game player and gamemaster
When I lived in seattle, his game days were a thing of epic beauty. Tons of people both serious and nerdly worthless. rooms in the basement filled with games. A fridge filled with pop. canadian chips and smarties or all sorts lined the counter. YOu could get into a serious board game or a silly light game or even a party game. His upstairs was decked out with stereo TV and tons of dvds Downstairs posters lined the walls. THere were 5 computers set up. And then dinner was the big treat in addition to the snax. pizza or other things. Once the board gaming died down it was always time for LAN STARCRAFT. We'd boot it up on all the computers and do a 4 x 4 against 4 AI players. It was always epic. As it was BEFORE i startewd on lexapro I was always cursing up a storm at the AI as well as the other human players that managed to kill the others so much more than I could. But his house was always ALWAYS open. Me and another friend used to say that he and his wife did attract the worst kind of nerd. Maybe I wqas one of those at the time. Or still am. But his was a sanctum to hang out in and just chill. A comfortable place. And he and his wife made it so. Despiute the fact that I really really did not keep in touch much...mainly because I knew he liked to argue so much...esp with me. I tend to get sensitive about people arguoining and putting me down. And he did make me feel that way sometimes. oh man....I didn't think it would be this soon. None of us did. Altho the friend that pinged me about it did kinda tell me that i'd better chat with him soon if i wanted to. When I saw him he sounded and looked great. I loved talking to him and wished I'd had more time to chat...but never really wanted to interrupt other things. I"m just happy he got to talk and chat with lots of other people these last two weeks. Docs said he probably didn't have 6 months. They were hopeful I had no idea. rest in peace my friend. A cat lover for the ages. Goodbye Chris |
My condolences on your loss, CF.

TMZ has fairly specific reporting about his wife running into an LAPD station saying her husband left home on foot without stuff which was unusual, and then separately, LAPD/ambulance got called to a hotel where someone died from what appeared to be a self-inflicted gunshot.
There was no mention of cause of death which, from reading tons of these things, usually means drugs or suicide. |

My wife had a customer in Hawaii who was childhood best friends with Franco. She had the pleasure of having dinner with him a few times on various sales calls. She said he was a lovely man. also fun fact, my last name is Harris, my sister was in grade school during the height of the Steelers runs. All the kids would call her Franco and she HATED it. |
Quote:
I didn’t see this coming. He always seemed so healthy and well spoken. This one hurts. |
Didn't they just air his "Football Life" last weekend for the anniversary??
|
Man, the timing too, they are retiring his number Saturday :( By all accounts he was an amazing man, R.I.P
As a kid whenever we played sandlot Football we would always pick who we were, my friend was always Franco Harris and I had to be Chuck Foreman so we could never be on the same team LOL. |
Quote:
That does suck. But at least he passed away knowing they were going to retire his number. |
Quote:
Good guy, good local guy. I admired his achievements, even at the expense of my favorite team. |
Franco was the guy I wanted to be as a kid on the playground. My favorite player, and even though I was still too young to understand the why he left Pittsburgh, I still tried to cheer for him with Seattle. I thought he was a football god. RIP
|
How do you wait until 2022 to retire Franco Harris number?
|
I don't even remember him playing, but he was always a presence in the media and around Pittsburgh. Always really positive and pleasant. The surprising thing is that he just seemed ageless. Never lost the dark beard, even into his 70's.
|
Quote:
They have retired numbers and then "officially retired numbers." The only ones officially retired, before Franco, are Mean Joe Greene and Ernie Stautner. There are 9 or 10 others that are out of use but not officially retired (Bradshaw, Bettis, Polamalu, Jack Lambert among others). |
Kind of wild - I was looking at Franco's reference page. He had 90 career fumbles, which seemed like a ton to me. But Walter Payton and Tony Dorsett were around the same number. I guess at some point in the late 80's/early 90's, someone figured out that running backs taking care of the ball was really important.

Pele has died at the age of 82. He was the biggest sports star in the world along with Ali when I was a kid. Even though soccer was definitely not as popular in the US when I was a kid, his name still carried a a lot of weight.

Benedict XVI, the Pope Emeritus, has died in Vatican City at the age of 95 following a period of ill health.
Benedict, who was the first pontiff in almost 600 years to resign his position, rather than hold office for life, passed away on Saturday, according to a statement from the Vatican. |
RIP
Don't know what to think of him and why he stood aside. He said age but my cynical self thinks he felt guilty about some events (e.g. handling of sexual abuse by priest) and didn't think he was worthy. FWIW. I've watched The Two Popes a couple times and enjoyed the dialog between the two. I like to think it's 80% accurate but probably more 95% embellishment. The Two Popes (2019) - IMDb |
Ok, a pope is also a pretty big one.

I have been watching some of the clips posted on Twitter of some of her interviews. The matter of fact way she would call people on their BS without even slightly raising her voice is jarring when compared to journalists today. It was going to be an interview. She would give the subject of the interview room for their talking points early but once that was done, the interviewee was going to answer her fair questions or be called out for doing so. |
RIP.

Such a fun footballer to watch in Italy and England. The time I lived in the UK coincided first with him playing in Serie A (so I watched him on Channel 4's Football Italia) and then he moved to Chelsea in 1996, eventually becoming player-manager (likely the most successful manager of the pre-Roman Abramovich era.
