He's just wrong period. It's called a spectrum for a reason. My son just turned 30, has been working at the local university in custodial for about the last 7 years. It's his second job. His first was a position at Autie Annie's Pretzel place in the mall where the (fantastic) manager made a position in the store just for him, and gradually he grew into other roles once he was comfortable. It took us 18 months of encouraging him to get that one because he was so nervous about working and people. He has some benefits from the state that pay for his community living services helper he meets with and he's grown quite a bit. It's success at his level. He's not neurotypical, and his growth curve looks different than everyone elses, but he's far from this bullshit opinion from a anti-science, anti-vax, conspiracy theorist who paints himself like his boss.

I saw a tweet about this that said something to the effect of, "I'm pretty sure RFK Jr can't do at least 4 of those 6 things."

dubb93 04-18-2025 08:52 PM

The number of people that see the increase in autism detection and think that all of those numbers are ALL level 3 on the scale blows my mind. People simply don’t understand that it is a spectrum and we have been widening that spectrum the more we understand it and you have people like RFK Jr. who profit off of that. He’s among the most vile people we have in this country.

The real irony here is that his buddy Elon Musk announced in 2021 that he is on the autism spectrum.

I nearly crashed the plane just to see if the other guy would stop me! He did, so I did my job by checking the training!

I didn't follow those procedures because I know the plane better than the manufacturer, and I know what it can handle. They don't know anything!

I fly where I want and when I want because I've never hit another plane before. Therefore, no matter where I go, I'll never hit one. I know this more than anyone else.

Not gonna burden the Pope thread with this comment, but ... seems pretty clear one or both of these things are true - JD Vance is the kiss of death, or the Pope decided he'd rather head off to the afterlife than live another day in a world in which Vance may end up the most powerful person in it. Although perhaps the latter isn't entirely fair, because if Trump keeps denigrating our world leadership position, the next President will just be one of the rest.

Between his speech and what Dr. Oz said, I think the approach is to blame people for these illnesses as a way to justify cuts to Medicaid, health care, and special education programs. There's a lot of weird eugenicist style thinking in that group too.

I think their dream is that if you come down with cancer, they can say "well that's because you used a 5G phone or took a flu vaccine, you don't deserve health care". Kids with special needs can be denied now because the parents gave them soda or whatever reason they make up for these things. The goal is to shift blame on to people and turn those with illnesses and disabilities into pariahs.

30-year bond rate. A sign of where markets view the fed rates headed over the next few decades. Basically the view is long term that dollar is going to weaken and we'll hit more inflation. Becomes much more expensive to borrow. If they force a fed rate cut, that number spikes even higher.

It's a really unique occurrence. Typically when stocks go down a lot, the dollar strengthens as people look to it for safety. This causes yields to drop. But the opposite is happening. I can't remember a time when stocks, bond yields, and the dollar are all down at the same time.

So now you have a tax on imports which makes them more expensive, a weaker dollar to buy those imports, and higher borrowing rates. Not to mention retaliatory tariffs that target the country's best industries. That's a perfect storm for a really bad economic downturn (especially if he fires Powell).

Now he could cave on the tariffs tomorrow and everything will be back to normal for the most part (I do think the loss of government jobs will show up shortly and cause issues). But not sure his ego will allow it despite him seeing what a disaster his policy has been so far.

We've been thinking of buying, but I'm starting to think renting makes sense, too. We've got enough for a big down payment, but I feel like I'd rather invest that money (a lot of it tax free since I'm not yet maxing out 401K, and could put a lot in 529s) than spend it on a down payment. What's the point of building equity if you have to pay over 6% to do it?

Not to mention the craziness happening. Even if "implode" is a strong word, it seems safe to think we could get out if we need to and just have cash available.

I don't think it would make it back up though. There have been so many wishy washy back and forth actions so far, that I wouldn't trust them to do something properly, and hold to it. It would be another "pause" that could pop back in whenever they want it to. That's likely because they profit from the chaos, and don't want market peace, as you can't constantly buy on the dips and sell at the peaks.

The brain drain in this country is going to be insane and it's all over a comically irrelevant amount of money. Especially when this research leads to innovations in medicine that make billions.

Stepping back, it's an insane fall for America. You have the President begging a foreign leader to stop bombing on maybe the 40th most popular social media app in the world. ChatGPT is writing our trade policy while the President plans a dinner for people who invest the most money in his imaginary coin. The Secretary of Defense is drunk 24/7 and we're deporting permanent residents for the crime of not liking a tiny pariah state in the Middle East.

All this is a downgrade from the previous President who had dementia and let Netanyahu run the country for the final 16 months of his Presidency.

Downfalls of empires are messy and this is sure going to be an interesting ride.

flere-imsaho 04-24-2025 02:30 PM

In good news, though, both Dick Durbin and Jan Shakowsky (U.S. Senate & U.S. House from IL, respectively, both dems) are retiring, which is great because they're both over 80 and IL has a strong bench of progressive politicians who are considerably under 80.

RainMaker 04-24-2025 03:05 PM

Schakowsky is only retiring because she has a progressive primary challenger that is raising a lot of money and the rumor is that she is up in internal polling. Her stepping down also opens the door for more moderate candidates which the establishment will want.

The Senate seat is pretty fascinating. Underwood would be terrific if she actually runs. There's a few other decent names. The DC establishment are going to try and get behind Rahm which is why he's been doing a redemption tour around media. That would be a disaster so it'll be an interesting fight between establishment and rising members of the party.

The most Dem move would be the party pushing super hard for Rahm to win the primary and then lose in the general to some moderate Republican because everyone in Chicago hates Rahm.

Lathum 04-24-2025 03:08 PM

I doubt this considerably. There is no way Schakowsky loses that seat. I'm willing to believe people with her ear used the interest in a primary challenge as a way to convince her it was time to let one of her proteges run for it, who will have, as you point out, the full weight of the establishment behind them.

It's a progressive district and Schakowsky has been progressive for a good chunk of her career. But I can't overstate how toxic the Israel stuff is right now. And the backlash against establishment Dems who have sat on their hands the past decade as fascism rolled in.

Maybe with the backing of the party, she'd pull that primary out, but there's a lot of support for other candidates in that district popping up and it would not be an easy race.

RainMaker 04-24-2025 05:27 PM

This party is so fucking cooked.

Just a moment...

Quote:

In the first of a series of speeches about the Democratic Party’s path out of the wilderness, the Michigan senator said she will span everything from strategy to tactics and tone, acknowledging public perception of the party as “weak and woke” needs to change. She is urging Democrats to “fucking retake the flag” with appeals to voters’ sense of patriotism, to adopt “the goddamn Alpha energy” of Detroit Lions coach Dan Campbell and to embrace an “airing out” of potential 2028 presidential candidates in a broadly contested primary.

Quote:

Her strategy also focuses on language and tone. She said Democrats should stop using the term “oligarchy,” a phrase she said doesn’t resonate beyond coastal institutions, and just say that the party opposes “kings.”

JPhillips 04-24-2025 05:44 PM

She's totally right about kings. Dems always want to find a better word, but simple and broadly understandable is better politics.

RainMaker 04-24-2025 06:04 PM

They literally just ran on that and it failed. She doesn't like the word oligarchy because her family is part of the oligarchy in Michigan.

Danny 04-24-2025 07:14 PM

I actually think shes right. In retrospect Kamala was never going to win after being the VP to a bad unpopular president and there not being a primary.

RainMaker 04-24-2025 07:22 PM

This isn't about strategy, Dems just don't want to run against the rich because that's who they serve as well.

AOC and Bernie are filling arenas up talking about oligarchy. Those are maybe the vibes that are good and not "let's be nice to billionaires".

Just staggering incompetency

So, at the risk of doxxing myself, I live in her district. I agree it would likely have been a challenging primary, but I very much doubt she would have lost. It's easy to look at the district, see Evanston, and figure you have an AOC situation, but all these communities in this district have a lot of middle-aged progressive folks who vote in every primary election (because they vote for schools and local elections) and they would have stayed with Schakowsky, even if, like me, they would have preferred that she retire.

Vibes aren't just one thing, RM.

I thought we were all doxable to each other at this point. :)

OK, fair. :)

Oligarchy is a big word. You overestimate the electorate, RM.

"Trump thinks he's a king who only wants to help his billionaire friends" is the type of thing we're going for here.

BTW, RM, do you think Sanders should retire? He's the second-oldest Senator currently serving.

I wish Democrats would actually just put up someone who is electable. AOC and Bernie are cool social media soundbytes but the average person who is not automatically inclined to vote blue probably will not vote for either.

Kamala probably was a better choice than Trump. The issue with her is people saw her and implicitly (explicitly for those who were already right leaning) thought Obama and Hillary.

Bernie is too old to run but he scores better than any of the Democrats not named Barack Obama with Republicans. He's the only major politician in both parties with a positive net favorability.

I just don't understand this obsession that Democrats have to run as Republicans to win. Those Republican voters never cross over. All it does is anger your base, alienate non-political voters, and lose.

The fascists are arresting judges now. It seems likely that ICE didn't have a warrant.

Edit to add that there may have been a warrant. There are conflicting reports. I've been following Seth Abramson on this story.

I guess the FBI is arresting judges now.

They were talking about this on the radio today and basically treated it like a minor story when in any other world this would be a bombshell story.

Lathum 04-25-2025 11:47 AM

They aren't even hiding it anymore....

Judge threw the book at him. Maybe this will be a lesson to MAGA zealots that you can't get away with the things Trump does. Not only did he commit crimes, but he took to social media calling it a witch-hunt, etc...showing no remorse or accountability and that surely factored in to his sentencing.

dola- will be interesting to see if Trump pardons him. My guess is no. Not even Trump wants that stench on him.

Atocep 04-26-2025 09:53 PM

In the next month or so Trump is going to pass Biden on number of executive orders signed during his term.

Remember when the GOP complained that Obama signed too many executive orders?

Can’t wait for his book. All these clowns who willingly took these positions and allow for this to go on can rot in a Salvadoran prison camp.

He chooses to post this on Election Day in Canada. It is unreal.

With 99% certainty, Trump's interference will directly result in a left wing government to be elected in Canada today (it was 90% Conservative odds until he started talking about the 51st state). Hope he's happy.

I guess he'll have to live with the silver lining that he'll still be able to deport people who make wrong turns and end up going across the Ambassador Bridge.
