I'm in the interview process for FAANG (same company and position I had before I left the US in 2021) and anecdotally I can predict it's going to be another tech bloodbath coming. Both the hiring manager and my old boss have basically said they aren't sure if they will get this position over the line as hiring freezes and layoffs are inevitably coming given the way the economy is going to go.
Thankfully I'm the second income in my household and relatively sheltered if I have to go drive Uber for a year but yeah. Some nice filling for the shit sandwich, so much winning. |
Wait till the AI bubble bursts. Still think they have a year or so to milk dummies but that is going to tank so many tech stocks.
|
Well, if they had truthfully marketed AI as a search engine that gets worse faster, the economy would have already collapsed.

We gave management of the strategic oil reserve over to a company that's existed for 5 years, has 3 listed employees, and specializes in buying storage units and we're paying them $1.4 billion. Seems legit.

Yes, the perfect time to lower interest rates is right after you did a massively inflationary thing. Can someone with an 8th grade understanding of economics explain this to him?
|
I pass/failed econ in college. I could probably fuck things up slightly less.
|
Yeah, I don't have a ton of econ background but even I know they can't lower interest rates if we have high inflation.
But I guess we see the strategy now. He fucks up the economy and will now make Powell out to be his scapegoat. |

I think the strategy would be to put pressure on Trump to remove the tariffs. If you give California an exemption, it's a huge boost to businesses and farmers in the state. It gives them a massive advantage over red state competitors. Take soybeans for example. If you give Illinois an exemption, you just destroy Iowa's farms. Won't take long for voters and politicians to speak up. |
How are they so bad at this?

Only got this news from work because we work with Fanatics on stuff. But they sent an e-mail that metal based products, which are mostly made in China, are getting a 10%-15% bump due to the tariffs immediately. Already got pushed through their app and the site will be refreshing in a few days. So if you plan to purchase any metal based products from that company, do so quickly on their website.

The US Commerce Sec has already said the quiet words out loud that any manufacturing that moves to the US because of tariffs will be powered by robots and AI, so any thoughts of a rich middle class due to manufacturing returning should be forgotten. The only winners if this happens would be the 4 oligarchs who were on stage with Trump during his inauguration

I also went to mine. I got to my city's Hands Off protest/pep rally about 15 minutes late so I spent about 1 hour and 45 minutes at it. There were probably around 1,000 people at the one in Fort Wayne, IN which is fairly Republican. I work remotely so it can feel isolating at times being a Democrat in this area. Luckily everyone in my family is progressive at least. I moved from Louisville a few years ago since my Dad lives in Ft. Wayne. It was uplifting to be around with others who oppose Trump. It was also great to hear a lot of cars, trucks, semi trucks, Amazon delivery vans, and USPS delivery trucks honking in support. |

Do you have any restaurant recommendations? Love the city but nothing is open late. I'll be back in a couple months and hopefully catching a Timbers game.

It is both weird and true that despite Portland's restaurant/bar/service culture, practically nothing is, or has ever been open late.I work about a half-mile from the Timbers' stadium, so most of my food knowledge in that immediate area is kinda cheap lunch-centric. In that vein I would recommend the Midtown Beer Garden, which is a pod of 20+ carts & Tokyo Sando in particular. There is a seemingly endless selection of restaurants in Portland, but for more serious eats around that area some of the ones that are worth the hype: Andina Langbaan Ox Kann and a couple more funky/casual personal favorites: Luce Plaza Coyoacan Khun Pic’s Bahn Thai |

I will never understand how lying to support the narrative is acceptable to some even when they’re supposedly Christian’s.
People are sharing this post on Facebook that all of these countries are lining up to negotiate on the tariffs which might be true but I asked him to show any evidence and he couldn’t. So when I said that that’s lying and a sin he said that I was being weird. Weird is calling people out on lying and reminding them that that too is a sin. Strange days indeed. There are rumors Scott Bessent wants out of the Trump administration because of the tariffs and being forced to support them is destroying his reputation in the financial industry.

Saw that "GOP Senator fears "decimation" over tariffs" was running as a story.. And I hope he meant figuratively, because as much as picking 1 out of every 10 GOP and killing them may be funny in theory, in practice, it'd be the worst massacre in history.

We're back to Trump wanting a military parade for his birthday. Last time the estimated taxpayer cost was $100 million and he was talked out of it. This time, without adults in the room, it's likely to happen.

I just called my GOP congressman and got a staffer. Ask them his stance on what is happening, if he is going to issue a statement or do a town hall, and if he or anyone else in the GOP is going to stand up to whats going on.

Democrats are so shell-shocked (or shaken) by losing to Trump that they can't help but keep making, "I understand Trump's motivation for doing X, and I agree..." statements. The latest is Whitmer. Call me crazy, but perhaps the better argument is to make your own case for how to achieve certain goals instead of being afraid of Trump. Jesus crispies.

They don't need a counter-argument until 2028. Right now it's enough to say this sucks, Trump sucks, and the GOP sucks. They need to resist the urge to get into the policy and just be the opposition.

You don't get it, this is just a threat to get other countries in line. Art of the Deal. Oh no, he's tariffing Canada and Mexico. You don't get it, this is just a way to get free money so we can cut taxes. Art of the Deal. Oh no, he's tariffing the whole world. You don't get it, he's just lowering interest rates to refinance the debt. Art of the Deal. Oh no, he's tariffing penguins. You don't get it, he's got to close all the loopholes. Art of the Deal. Oh no, the bond market is cratering. You don't get it, this is just China trying to bully us because it's about to give up. Art of the Deal. Oh, he's pausing most of the tariffs. What was the fucking point? You don't get it. Now we know who our allies are. Art of the Deal. We still have 125% tariffs on China and 10% or maybe 25% or possibly 35% on Canada and Mexico. Oh, and 10% on everyone else. That's really bad. You don't get it. These tariffs will lead to a new golden age of American manufacturing. Art of the Deal. |

He was surprisingly right on that take. Navarro is an utter moron. |
We were scrambling to hold some shipments from Japan today which would have cost us 180K in tariffs. And then BOOM, another rule change. What's to stop the next thing from happening tomorrow? I'm pretty sure they're working on a new tariff for softwood lumber for Canada right now. The worst thing for business is uncertainty, and a lot of companies are just going to avoid doing business with the USA right now as their government is not trustworthy and they are unreliable.
|
Yeah, things are much better than yesterday, but much worse than last week.
|
It's not done.
There's still a 10% tariff globally. 25% on steel and aluminum 25% on cars Likely 25% on softwood coming in the next few days This is just the BS trade deficit calculation tariff that has been removed. Once people figure this out, stock market to start going back down again. |
We've been working with Cerner to get our MHS Genesis equipment replaced since our hospital was the first site to deploy it and that equipment is now 7 years old. Talking to Cerner yesterday I found out that a decent chunk of our replacements are manufactured in China. We have a budget that we have to work within and Just our do ument scanners along have seen the price go from $900 last week to $1300 today and are expected to go to upwards of $2500 next month. When were trying to replace over 400 of them that's a significant amount of money that's not in the budget. So our options are to either buy maintenance kits for the existing scanners and let them limp along until prices come back down or someone comes up with the money to eat the additional cost. Either way, we're paying significantly more and the scanners are just a fraction of what we're trying to replace.

Reports that the EU are negotiating with China to eliminate tariffs on Chinese EVs. That would crush American car companies and it'd be interesting to see if Canada follows suit. China makes better EVs than anyone right now and they're cheap.
