Bruce Springsteen's 'Glory Days': Inspiration for Song Dead at 75

I always thought the dude in this song (if real) was more the butt of a joke than someone who would want to be known for it.

Lathum 04-03-2025 05:07 AM

I was born and raised in freehold. My mom and uncle went to school with him. My dad was friends with his mom. He was the town pharmacist and Bruce mentions him in concert sometimes before doing my hometown.

Evidently Nicky Katt committed suicide a couple of weeks ago. Surprised I hadn't heard about it anywhere. He wasn't a massive star, but he seemed to pop up everywhere in the late 90s and mid 2000s. Had probably the second most memorable line from Dazed and Confused.

The only movie I've seen him in was Gremlins :)
But I am more than positive I saw/heard him in his 80s TV shows and KOTOR 2

Ksyrup 04-28-2025 07:31 AM

Never heard of the guy, but that bio suggests he was the heir apparent to William Zabka.

Ksyrup 04-28-2025 04:49 PM

Not sure how famous, but I was today years old when I learned that Kevin Love's dad played in the NBA and was the brother of Beach Boy Mike Love. He passed away.

Critch 04-29-2025 11:58 AM

Mike Peters, lead singer of 80s band The Alarm died this morning, fought leukemia for 30 years and it finally won.

I checked their discography and they had a good number of hits in the USso maybe he counts as famous.

I feel like the Beach Boy thing was pretty talked about, kind of like did you know Kershaw and Matthew Stafford went to high school together?

Ksyrup 04-29-2025 01:00 PM

Either (or both) it was so long ago I don't remember it, or I don't really listen to announcers all that much.

Cliff, Sam, and Carla pay their respects.

I not only liked him in Cheers, I LOVED him in Fletch! He really showed acting chops there. Also remember guest spots like Spin City. and even Top Chef. The last 10 years, he had been making little appearances here and there on things and had a great look with his silver do

This story just got insane. Apparently murdered in cold blood by a former neighbor in front of his partner because they were gay.

Orrrrr because the voice actor had a history of creating problems in the neighborhood, including with this particular neighbor.

'King of the Hill' Actor Had Long Feud With Neighbor Accused of Fatal Shooting

Combine that story with Joss' ... questionable ... behavior at a convention just a few days ago and, well ... not so cut & dried.

So that justifies it?

That'll be for a jury to decide.

I'm just saying that there's every bit as much indication that this was a case of FAFO as it was the narrative you wanted to promote.

Lathum 06-03-2025 05:04 AM

I’m not promoting a narrative any more than you are. Just posting story I read about it.

Local San Antonio reporters interviewed neighbors who talked about how Joss would be paranoid about people being just past the chainlink fenceline of the property where the shooting occurred. He would even have issues with people driving past the lot, never mind being just off the property. The lot had a house that was his childhood home, but the house burned down in January. Joss and the shooter apparently had a long running feud.

Whether Joss was experiencing depression or mental illness, who knows, but it seems like there are a lot of variables in play here...

They killed his dog and displayed it out front and when they were upset about that guy came out and shot at them. He pushed his husband out of the way. The murderer is a real piece of shit

The dog died in the fire according to all reports. But you go ahead & believe what you want I guess.

I mean, a guy who burned down his own house while heating it with a bbq pit, who regularly got on his roof & banged on pots & pans, I'm sure he's completely an innocent victim.

albionmoonlight 06-11-2025 01:29 PM

One of the all-time greats. RIP.

Ghost Econ 06-11-2025 01:49 PM

The amount my dad hates the Beach Boys is kind of surprising. I guess he's always just seen them as this teenie bopper boy band from his youth who made music before it became "cool".

cuervo72 06-11-2025 01:51 PM

I don't think my dad is fond of them either. (I don't think he'd wish for Wilson's death as a birthday present, but I don't think he liked the band much.)

Ghost Econ 06-11-2025 04:00 PM

Are the Beach Boys the greatest American band?

albionmoonlight 06-11-2025 04:10 PM

In the conversation, which (off the top of my head) would include R.E.M., The Eagles, and Van Halen

not even close.

I mean Wilson is a genius but i'd scarcely call them a band.

So many more better ones that all play instruments

Autopsy being performed to determine cause.

Micheal Madsen, of "Kill Bill", "Reservoir Dogs" and many others, died of a heart attack at 67. At my age, that is just too f-ing young.

...it's an extremely provocative conversation, remarkable that there's such a long list of arguable candidates... The Eagles sold the most records, but Aerosmith, Earth Wind & Fire, the Grateful Dead, and Lynyrd Skynyrd all join your list as arguable answers, at least. You can dig even deeper and find a workable pitch, at least.

flere-imsaho 07-03-2025 04:54 PM

Define "greatest" first.

QuikSand 07-03-2025 04:56 PM

well that's part of the fun

pretty much every debate about "the greatest" is inherently a subjective mix of popularity, familiarity, talent, influence, staying power, and other things... if it were just the math of album sales we'd have nothing to debate in bars and life would be empty

flere-imsaho 07-03-2025 05:03 PM

Something like the only performing artist to play and sell out shows in the three biggest stadiums in the greater New York area in a single summer?

GrantDawg 07-03-2025 05:21 PM
