Wow. So young.
|
Damnit. Did we know he had cancer, or is this out of the blue?
EDIT: Nevermind, I see in that article that he announced he was undergoing treatment back in 2022. |
Wow. Crazy.

RIP Dikembe
One of the most memorable sports voices of all time. I first got into college basketball around the time he and Alonzo Mourning were at Georgetown together. That era of basketball in the Big East was so much fun with all of the stars and different coaching personalities (John Thompson, Jim Boeheim, Lou Carnesecca, Rollie Massimino, and Jim Calhoun). |
WHO WANTS TO SEX MUTOMBO?
Really cool player that seemed like a fun guy to be around. The finger wag remains one of the most iconic taunts in sports. RIP. |
Pete Rose has passed away. Two different kind of sports figures to die on the same day.

I shouldn't have been but I was shocked to see he was 83.
Sooooo does baseball have a moment of silence for the passing of the game's all time hit leader? |
He must have missed on a big parlay involving Arizona making the MLB playoffs
|
Idk. I'm personally all for recognizing players for their on the field accomplishment while also recognizing they may personally be POS. Baseball has taken such a hard stance on him, and probably rightfully so.

John Amos is one of those guys I always thought had died and then he would show up in something. His character's death in "Good Times" was so traumatic that it scarred my brain.

John Amos actually died in August. The family just held off announcing it.

He's one of those actors that I can pretty much hear his voice in my head when I see a picture of him. RIP.
|
I'd give every celebirty ever to have my brother back
|

I'm old enough to have watched him in "Good Times" during its original broadcasts in the late 70's. My favorite John Amos role was Admiral Fitzwallace on "West Wing." |

I either missed it, or no sports news service thought it was important enough to mention that Luis Tiant died yesterday.
I know he actually had basically 2 careers, but it's the Red Sox one that I remember most. RIP to the dude with the fu manchu mustache and unique windup. |

fwiw, ESPN did have a story at least for a while, 'cause that's the only reason I knew about it yesterday. |
I guess I should clarify, ESPN, MLB. and any other sports app I get notifications from didn't think his passing was important enough to send a notification out. Aside from going there to get to the WatchESPN portion of their website, I can't recall the last time I actually visited ESPN.com (or, frankly, most sports/news websites) without being directed there straight from a link to a specific article.
In fact, when I just typed ESPN.com into my browser, what came up was ESPN.com/activate, which makes a ton of sense. |
I tried to get to the ESPN NCAAF scores page from my phone the other day and it automatically opened up the app (where I couldn't easily find how to filter the scores). Hey, if I wanted the app I'd have looked in the app. (Need to delete the app.)
I saw mentions of his death on Twitter, but more from sports follower/adjacent types. |
I rarely if ever use Twitter anymore. It's basically when one of my kids DMs me something funny, or someone I have notifications on for posts something I can't just read on the notification.
The tweets about Helene and NC confirmed that I need to stay away from that place. Even the useful posts were mixed with or came from people whose timelines were a cesspool of garbage. No thanks. |
Multiple reports that Liam Payne, former member of One Direction, yeeted himself off a roof in Argentina. Sounds like he was having personal and legal troubles.

Evidently my niece is apoplectic about it. I guess the next generation is starting to reach that age where it's not crazy their people will start dying.
|
An hour before he died, he was doing an Snapchat live and seemed fine.

But I also read that police were called to deal with someone with erratic behavior as if they were on drugs or alcohol. Odd.
|
Conspiracy theories are off the charts about this.
|
Liam Payne's blood work has come back, and it would be easier to list the drugs that were not in his system.

RIP Fernandomania.
I remember seeing him play against the Pirates in the mid-90s, right after I graduated high school. He was pitching for the Padres and smoked a 3-run home run down the line. I looked at his reference page and he actually hit 10 career homers, which surprised me since he never appeared to be the most athletic or fit guy. Looking over his career, he had a pretty awesome one for achievements. Won RoY, Cy Young, 2 World Series rings, a Gold Glove, 2 Silver Sluggers, made a half dozen all star teams, and pitched a no hitter. I mean, if you were setting a goal list as an MLB pitcher, he pretty much checks all the boxes except 300 wins and Hall of Famer. Also amusing is that he was listed as 5'11 and 180 lbs. |
Quote:
Oh yeah, he was a good hitting pitcher. Just a .200 hitter but only 12 DPs in over 1,000 PA and only a 13.8% strikeout rate. That's a lower whiff rate than 17 of the top 20 (BA) hitters in the NL this past season. (only Arraez, Betts, and Donovan were better) |

John Kruk hit 100 career home runs |
What? No....
|
Fernando dying, or Kruk hitting 100 HRs?
|
|
Kruk.

|
Oh Phil. Love those Phil bombs he did from time to time. Fantastic bass player he was.

RIP Teri Garr
