Canadian writer and Nobel prize winner Alice Munro dies at 92

I think winning a Nobel Prize for literature makes you famous enough for in here.

Plus the "what are you reading" thread has vanished off the front page, so this one is easier to find.

cuervo72 05-14-2024 07:27 PM

I have a couple of Munro collections on my shelf, but I've not read them yet. I probably should.

Critch 05-14-2024 08:03 PM

You really should. I've read a couple of the collections and picked up a few more on second-hand bookstore visits, she was a great writer.

Dabney Coleman died at 92. Surprised by the age, just off the top of my head.

Cloak & Dagger is one of my favorite 80's kids movies.

I end up watching it every few years. It is bonkers and violent.

Documentary filmmaker Morgan Spurlock, who skewered fast food industry, dies at 53 | AP News

I was not a fan. He made a mockery of documentaries. He was more interested in pushing an agenda than facts.

Oh wow. I always enjoyed his stuff.

I find this comment a bit odd. A lot of documentaries push an agenda. Blackfish comes to mind.

Walton might be the greatest “what could been” stories all of sports and still became a hall of famer.

As far as his announcing, one man’s annoying is another man’s weird/quirky/interesting.

Ksyrup 05-27-2024 12:53 PM

Seems fitting in a way that he passed as the Pac 10/12 dissolves into nothing but a memory. It's almost like he had nothing left to do in his life (professionally speaking of course).

I was one of the few, it seems, that enjoyed his announcing. He loved the game and enjoyed life and that came through on his broadcasts. As I got older I came to appreciate how differently he approached a broadcast compared to his peers.

Chet Walker Dies at 84

Showing my age here but I got addicted to NBA basketball as a kid listening to Jim Durham's radio calls of the Bulls back when Walker, Bob Love, Jerry Sloan, and Norm Van Lier were the stars. (Yes radio because the NBA got very little tv coverage back in those days.) Good times.

RIP Chet "The Jet" Walker

And he wasn't even cast in the role. He was one of the other men. But the guy who was cast refused to do the goofy stuff so the director pointed to him and said "Hey you! You do it."

I'm pretty sure that story is about his role in The Dirty Dozen, not Kelly's Heroes.

Clint Walker refused to do the phony general reviewing the troops scene, so Robert Aldrich pointed to Sutherland and told him to do it instead. That scene led to him being cast in MASH.

oh yes you are correct. ha ! I never realized that was about Dirty Dozen! :D

Well shit, Martin Mull died.

Ksyrup 06-29-2024 03:30 PM

I suppose it's directly related to how long someone has been out of the public eye (or at least my eye), but there are some people who seem like they are way older (or younger) than they are.

For instance, Martin Mull and Dabney Coleman seemed like contemporaries. But Coleman was a dozen years older than Mull. That doesn't jibe with my brain.

weegeebored 06-29-2024 08:03 PM

Mull and Fred Willard were fantastic in Fernwood/America 2-Night. RIP Martin.

Word Perfect was great. Simply the best word processor at the time. My daughter found my old WP keyboard command template, and couldn't believe that we used to use keyboard shortcuts for everything.

Aside from functionality, my favorite WP experience was one time calling for technical support. First, they had a DJ playing music and providing live updates on hold status for specific issues, second was that they had a party line option where callers could assist one another while they were on hold. I imagine that a lot of their calls were resolved in that environment at very little expense to them. Just Brilliant.

I was so good with WordPerfect in the day. Imagine 25+ page school reports with citations. There is no way I could do that now.

Old school DC. Asked if he would be a head coach and he said no chance. Great dude all the way around and true to himself. A bulldog of the last throes of hard hitting defense in the NFL.
