Canadian writer and Nobel prize winner Alice Munro dies at 92
I think winning a Nobel Prize for literature makes you famous enough for in here. Plus the "what are you reading" thread has vanished off the front page, so this one is easier to find. |
I have a couple of Munro collections on my shelf, but I've not read them yet. I probably should.
|
You really should. I've read a couple of the collections and picked up a few more on second-hand bookstore visits, she was a great writer.

Dabney Coleman died at 92. Surprised by the age, just off the top of my head.
|
Cloak & Dagger is one of my favorite 80's kids movies.
I end up watching it every few years. It is bonkers and violent. |

I was not a fan. He made a mockery of documentaries. He was more interested in pushing an agenda than facts.
|
Oh wow. I always enjoyed his stuff.

I find this comment a bit odd. A lot of documentaries push an agenda. Blackfish comes to mind. |

RIP Bill Walton. The basketball hall of famer, and all-time annoying sportscaster passed away from cancer at the age of 71
NBA champion, Hall of Famer Bill Walton dies at 71 - ESPN |

Walton might be the greatest “what could been” stories all of sports and still became a hall of famer. As far as his announcing, one man’s annoying is another man’s weird/quirky/interesting. |
Seems fitting in a way that he passed as the Pac 10/12 dissolves into nothing but a memory. It's almost like he had nothing left to do in his life (professionally speaking of course).

Quote:
I was one of the few, it seems, that enjoyed his announcing. He loved the game and enjoyed life and that came through on his broadcasts. As I got older I came to appreciate how differently he approached a broadcast compared to his peers. |
RIP Larry Allen
The all-time great offensive lineman passed away at the age of 52. Cowboys Hall of Famer Larry Allen dies suddenly at age 52 - ESPN |
Chet Walker Dies at 84
Showing my age here but I got addicted to NBA basketball as a kid listening to Jim Durham's radio calls of the Bulls back when Walker, Bob Love, Jerry Sloan, and Norm Van Lier were the stars. (Yes radio because the NBA got very little tv coverage back in those days.) Good times. RIP Chet "The Jet" Walker |
RIP Jerry West. The man on the NBA logo passed away at the age of 86.

This one hits hard. He averaged 29.3 PPG and 16.5 boards as a 6'3 guard in his senior year at West Virginia.
RIP to one of the most competitive humans ever. |

DAMMIT!
And just two days before the game at Rickwood Field. RIP |
sad day.

Donald Sutherland has passed away at 88. He had a good run. He was always great in whatever he was in.

My favorite Donald Sutherland role. "Oddball" in the movie "Kelly's Heroes".
|
Quote:
And he wasn't even cast in the role. He was one of the other men. But the guy who was cast refused to do the goofy stuff so the director pointed to him and said "Hey you! You do it." |
Quote:
I'm pretty sure that story is about his role in The Dirty Dozen, not Kelly's Heroes. Clint Walker refused to do the phony general reviewing the troops scene, so Robert Aldrich pointed to Sutherland and told him to do it instead. That scene led to him being cast in MASH. |
Quote:
oh yes you are correct. ha ! I never realized that was about Dirty Dozen! :D but yup that led him being cast in MASH :) |

Spencer Milligan passed away who was the father on...ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!!!!!!!
|
Well shit, Martin Mull died.
|
I suppose it's directly related to how long someone has been out of the public eye (or at least my eye), but there are some people who seem like they are way older (or younger) than they are.
For instance, Martin Mull and Dabney Coleman seemed like contemporaries. But Coleman was a dozen years older than Mull. That doesn't jibe with my brain. |
Mull and Fred Willard were fantastic in Fernwood/America 2-Night. RIP Martin.
|
RIP. It's been ages since I've heard about WordPerfect. At one time, it was my word processor of choice and then it faded into oblivion sometime mid-90s (?).

Jon Landau produced 6 movies... 1 made a million dollars, one lost 15 million, one made $400 million... And the other 3 made almost 8 billion combined

Word Perfect was great. Simply the best word processor at the time. My daughter found my old WP keyboard command template, and couldn't believe that we used to use keyboard shortcuts for everything. Aside from functionality, my favorite WP experience was one time calling for technical support. First, they had a DJ playing music and providing live updates on hold status for specific issues, second was that they had a party line option where callers could assist one another while they were on hold. I imagine that a lot of their calls were resolved in that environment at very little expense to them. Just Brilliant. |

Not entirely my lane, but generally hailed as a nice guy by all accounts I know of. Dealt with slow developing ALS for 4+ years, it forced him off the road back in January of this year, and is listed as the cause of death today :(
Rest in peace. Joe Bonsall Dead: Oak Ridge Boys Member, Country Hall of Famer Was 76 |

actress Shelley Duval passed away at the age of 75
R.I.P. Shelley Duvall, star of The Shining and Robert Altman muse I had no idea she lived that close to me |
Dying in the middle of the ESPYs seems like more of a Lane Kiffin move, not Monte Kiffin. Rip the father of the Tampa 2 D.

Old school DC. Asked if he would be a head coach and he said no chance. Great dude all the way around and true to himself. A bulldog of the last throes of hard hitting defense in the NFL. |

Richard Simmons now too.

If Mr. T goes tonight, I think we can close the book on the 80s.
