They are now saying it is a suspicious dearh investigation. One theory is that she fell with the pills, and the dog might have eaten some and poisoned himself. Still no guess on what killed them both.

Edit: Also, they were partially mummified when found. They have been dead for a while.

The dog was in a kennel or cage. I think it could have starved. Two other dogs - one inside, one outside - survived.

There are conflicting reports on the dog. The report I saw he was in a closet but not caged.

I saw the police press conference, and they did say the dog was in a crate. Poor puppy probably did die of dehydration.

Edit: They are still not ruling out carbonmonoxcide. Because they have been dead a while, any gas might have already dissipated before they were found.

Early tests show no signs of carbonmonoxcide poisoning.

We have the full sad story now. Gene Hackman died a week after his wife collapsed and died from the hantavirus. He had advanced Alzheimers, and died from Cardiovascular disease.

Pretty darn sad story.

I don't know his financial/personal situation but you'd think he would have resources to spend on home healthcare help etc. and/or his kids would checkup on them more than once a week.

Friends said he had become reclusive and suffering mentally. I wonder if he didn't allow anyone too close to them near the end. And obviously she wasn't in a good space either.

I'm sure I've posted about it here at some point, but I had a morbidly obese/hoarder aunt who passed over 20 years ago. She didn't show up for Thanksgiving at my uncle's, they went and checked on her, and found her dead in her apartment. Had been 2-3 weeks. She would never let anyone come to her place. Once she passed, we found out why. We went up there to help clean up. It still sticks with me to this day.

Had a cousin who died the same way. After a couple of weeks one of her brothers finally broke into her house and found her dead in filth in the kitchen. It is so sad what mental demons can cause.

My mom died of Alzheimer, and her husband was her only caretaker. He refused help even when she had deteriorated to the point she couldn't remember to eat, drink or use the bathroom on her own. She had always made clear she never wanted to be put into a facility or be a "burden" to us kids, so instead she made the man that loved her give up his whole life to only care for her. He died shortly after she did.

I don't know if everyone knows Junior Bridgeman, but he was a former UL player in the 70s under Denny Crum and played in the NBA for about a decade, mostly with the Bucks. After his playing days, he became a billionaire businessman and part owner of the Bucks. He was a big Louisville community leader/philanthropist.

Anyway, today, literally next door to our office, he was attending a charity event. A co-worker of mine and my boss's wife were there. After the event, Bridgeman was giving an interview, stopped, told everyone he thought he was having a heart attack, and basically collapsed. I don't know if he died there or at the hospital, but unfortunately he passed.

IIRC was drafted by the Lakers (never played for them) and a part of the Kareem trade.

A great Hog during our heyday

John Feinstein passed away. Was my go-to for book reports in school. A Season on the Brink is still one of the best sports books I've ever read. He had a knack for picking a team/conference/season and bringing it to life. The Last Amateurs, A March for Madness, and A Civil War are incredible books.

Also, considering we don't know how he died or what he died of, this statement seems ... weird. Or a clue to how he died.


Now, if he had an undisclosed illness and kept working until the day he died, this makes sense. I'm guessing someone knows the truth and gave it away with this statement? Because if he had a heart attack or died in a car wreck, it doesn't really make any sense. Most people who die (relatively) young and unexpectedly are doing something up until they suddenly die. The fact that I put in a normal day at work the day before I step in front of a bus isn't evidence of my "indefatiguable work ethic."

A twist re: Hackman and wife. Wife supposedly died on Feb 11 but plenty of evidence that she was alive on Feb 12 and not seemingly ill.

I don't know how often coroners "miss" date of deaths. Some variances are understandable but this one seems like a big miss? Also, some questions if she really died of hantavirus. My guess is the coroner messed up here.

It makes you wonder how often coroners miss things. In most cases, there's no need to follow up or anything.

One of my best friends is a medical examiner. The quality of medical examiners definitely varies. There is a significant shortage of them, because in relation to other medical professions that require a MD, it doesn't pay well. Most medical examiners are employed by state or local government, so their pay is restricted by local rules/budgets on pay. My friend has found it incredibly difficult to recruit and hire new doctors as a result.

There are some counties that outsource their medical examiner work to pathologists at local hospitals, but that's not really their "day job" so to speak, so the quality can vary there as well.

My friend is really good at it and does work for the FBI on cold cases in addition to his work. For the first few years, whenever we'd get back together we'd always ask him about his job and his most interesting cases... It was often over dinner and we quickly stopped asking. A lot of his stories were super gross or disturbing like the fire fetishist guy who got off on fire and eventually started to lather himself in that stuntman jelly, light himself on fire, and start masturbating until the last time when he was unable to put the fire out and ended up burning to death. At least he died doing what he loved!

RIP Clive Revill, a fantastic Columbo murderer in the last episode of the original (70s) series and, oh yeah, I guess he starred on Broadway and was the original voice of the Emperor in Star Wars and did a bunch of other stuff, too.

In the "I thought he was already dead" category, Richard Chamberlan has died at 90. King of the mini-series, shows like Centennial, Shogun, and The Thorn Birds were such events. He was every 70's and 80's mom's crush.

He was "Dr. Kildare" in the 60's as well, but that wasn't a show that I ever saw on reruns. I heard the name many times (usually in jokes. Great joke name for a doctor).

The TV show followed the radio version (starring Lew Ayres) which had been created after a successful series of movies.

Lionel Barrymore as the wise old Dr. Gillespie was very good in the radio version.

edit to add: Maybe I shouldn't say "good" so much as "entertaining" cause he cranked that character up to 11 every chance he got lol

I don't know how I never saw it. Most of those shows were available on TBS or stations like that, but I never saw anyone carrying it.

Really can't answer that. I remember watching "Centennial", but was very young and don't really remember much. I really don't think I watched Shogun or Thorn Birds. Thorn Birds I just had no interest in, and I don't know why I didn't watch Shogun. I actually might have and just completely forgotten it.

Val Kilmer was one of the greatest actors of his generation. His career was derailed because of cancer, and now dead too young. His Doc Holiday in Tombstone is one of the best movie characters of all time.

Evidently Nicky Katt committed suicide a couple of weeks ago. Surprised I hadn't heard about it anywhere. He wasn't a massive star, but he seemed to pop up everywhere in the late 90s and mid 2000s. Had probably the second most memorable line from Dazed and Confused.

Not sure how famous, but I was today years old when I learned that Kevin Love's dad played in the NBA and was the brother of Beach Boy Mike Love. He passed away.

Mike Peters, lead singer of 80s band The Alarm died this morning, fought leukemia for 30 years and it finally won.

I checked their discography and they had a good number of hits in the USso maybe he counts as famous.

I feel like the Beach Boy thing was pretty talked about, kind of like did you know Kershaw and Matthew Stafford went to high school together?

Either (or both) it was so long ago I don't remember it, or I don't really listen to announcers all that much.

He was great in Fletch.

This story just got insane. Apparently murdered in cold blood by a former neighbor in front of his partner because they were gay.

Orrrrr because the voice actor had a history of creating problems in the neighborhood, including with this particular neighbor.

Local San Antonio reporters interviewed neighbors who talked about how Joss would be paranoid about people being just past the chainlink fenceline of the property where the shooting occurred. He would even have issues with people driving past the lot, never mind being just off the property. The lot had a house that was his childhood home, but the house burned down in January. Joss and the shooter apparently had a long running feud.

Whether Joss was experiencing depression or mental illness, who knows, but it seems like there are a lot of variables in play here...

The amount my dad hates the Beach Boys is kind of surprising. I guess he's always just seen them as this teenie bopper boy band from his youth who made music before it became "cool".

I don't think my dad is fond of them either. (I don't think he'd wish for Wilson's death as a birthday present, but I don't think he liked the band much.)

...it's an extremely provocative conversation, remarkable that there's such a long list of arguable candidates...
