I assume that article is about Quincy Jones. RIP an absolute legend.
|
I assume this guy counts, even if barely anyone knew his name - Elwood Edwards, a behind-the-scenes guy at a Cleveland TV station who voiced AOL's "You've Got Mail!" greeting, died at 74.

RIP Tony Todd
Not a big fan of horror movies but Candyman is one of my favorites and it's largely because he is so menacing in it. |
Never really did much with BASIC but it was the first language for most people pre-early 90ish. RIP

RIP Rico Carty.
Back in the 80s, when I played Strat-O-Matic year after year, they had a set of 40-50 random teams spanning a bunch of decades that I bought. One of those teams was the 1970 Braves. When I'd create my own draft of players from those teams, I'd love taking Carty because he raked that year, and his card seemed like it was nothing but hit after hit. Good times. |
Also RIP Chuck Woolery.

I will be forever thankful that I lived in an era of coaching personalities like Louie, Big John Thompson, Jimmy V, and others. Even a-holes like Bobby Knight and Jim Calhoun made you feel something genuine. I'm not sure if that is possible in 2024 but man that was a fun era of college basketball. I miss it. |
Ricky Henderson passed today.
|
How is this not huge, breaking news? Just got notification from a newsletter I subscribe to. Damn.
|
That just sucks.

Oh man, not Rickey. Yeah, this one sucks.
|
Of all the great stories about Henderson, this is my favorite, about how he stood up for part-time players, minor leaguers, and clubhouse staff when the team would vote on playoff shares.
From Mike Piazza in his 2013 memoir: “Rickey was the most generous guy I ever played with, and whenever the discussion came around to what we should give one of the fringe people — whether it was a minor leaguer who came up for a few days or the parking lot attendant — Rickey would shout out “Full share!” We’d argue for a while and he’d say, “Fuck that! You can change somebody’s life!” |

I hope St Peter doesn't enforce that "Thou shall not steal" rule too strictly. You know, because of all the bases Rickey stole. |

I JUST got The Athletic notification of his death, quickly followed by ESPN. WTF? All these sports sites cut so much staff they don't have anyone who can cobble together a push notification because they're too busy with CFB, NFL and CBB today? It was almost like Athletic got their shit together and someone from ESPN saw their notification and quickly sent one out, too.
|
I wonder if there was some hesitation by the big outlets since the story had been out there unconfirmed for at least 8 hours on Twitter.
|
Maybe. Because AP has now sent out a breaking news notificaiton as well. I wonder if the combination of unconfirmed and out of the blue caused a delay while they confirmed.
|
For certain you have to be careful, because major media has been burned on these things pretty regularly.
|
Way too young. What a history maker. RIP Rickey.

RIP Greg Gumbel. He made selection Sunday special.

I always remember him from the way he pronounced "Chicogo."

Babe Ruth hit 430 home runs after Carter was born.

If Carter did nothing more than his work with the Carter Center to eradicate guinea worm he'd be one of the great humanitarians in human history. Cases have dropped from a million a year to fewer than ten this year.

Carter is an amazing example of how to live a life of kindness and humanity

Carter was a great humanitarian. He led a life well lived.

He was a terrible President who we are still feeling the effects of today (although some blame goes to the CIA for fucking him over). But he spent the rest of his life trying to make up for that and did some remarkable humanitarian works that will live on. One of the only Presidents who actually tried to make the world a better place after their Presidency. It's funny you'd think people on the left wouldn't like him when it was the mainstream Democrats who blackballed him for decades due to his humanitarian work. |

MLB Radio is playing a clip of a time recently when the door to the booth was locked and they couldn't get it open and he is simultaneously calling the game and the crew trying to get the door open and it is a riot.

As a testament to how good Major League is, and specifically his role in it, even my teenage boys like it, and they don't like any movie that's more than 10 years old, and they especially howled at some of his lines.

a few months ago my 11 year old softball crazed daughter had a friend sleep over. The friend tapped out about midnight and the mom had to come. I was still up and after the kid leaves daughter tells me she isn't tired and she wants to watch a movie. Her and I stayed up late and watched Major League and she loved it. Was such a fun dad/daughter moment. |
David Lynch dead at 78.
Who will be the third? |
David Lynch, RIP
Watching Eraserhead was a scarring teenage moment for me But I, along with multiple friends, was/were fully enthralled with Twin Peaks and were riveted to that show like almost nothing else, ever (maybe The Wire at that level, but that's it). |
I remember as a teenager picking up Blue Velvet at the rental store and watching it with my mom. That level of cringe never heals. RIP David Lynch

I had a negative visceral reaction to Doc Severinsen saying that the Tonight Show gave Uecker the opportunity to market himself. I'm sure it says more about my feelings to the marketing ways of the current day than to Uecker going on the Tonight Show. It does sadden me that a Bob Uecker today would probably be seen as manufactured as opposed to just a natural.

I mean, he's not wrong. There weren't many platforms in the era that provided that much exposure AND bestowed as much credibility for an entertainer. Without that brand building, getting the Miller Lite ads would have been tougher at the very least. And without those combined, he doesn't host SNL. And without all that he sure doesn't get Mr. Belvedere. And without all that he doesn't get Major League. |
Quote:
He definitely was not wrong. And if this were 15-20 years ago, I probably don't have the same reaction to someone marketing themselves or the urge to put marketing in quotes. |

There are a handful of people on this planet that can call a game by themselves and have you completely invested. I loved listening to Uecker on the radio as a kid as I'd be able to get Milwaukee games from the north suburbs of Chicago. I didn't even care for the Brewers but it was like listening to someone tell a riveting story over 3 hours. Will likely never see that again.
And he was a great comedic actor. Major League isn't the same without him playing Harry Doyle. People are still quoting his lines from that movie. RIP to a legend. |
Been listening th mostly MLB radio and it has been a stead stream of players and announcers telling stories about Uecker.
They just had Jonathan Lucroy on and he told the hosts in 2015 he had Bob record the voicemail greeting on his cellphone and he still has it. They called him and let it go to voicemail and it was a riot. So many funny stories coming out about him. |
|
Quote:
I watched several segments covering his life and interviews from other broadcasters and players. Ueker had one hell of a life. Ballplayer, actor, broadcaster, hall of famer, and probably the funniest man involved in baseball. |

Somethimg something Vince Neil's plane
|
Vince Neil is a pilot and has piloted that plane before. No word yet whether he was on the plane, but it is mist likely the one dead and the seriously injured was the pilot. The plane ran off the runway and hit another plane.

I didn't realize he was a pilot. He should still be in jail for killing Razzle, not given a pilot's license too. Sheesh.
Bruce Dickinson is probably the most famous rocker I can think of who is a pilot, seeing as though he used to fly their large jet on world tours. I'm sure there are others, but had never heard that info about Neil. |

Complications from a liver transplant. That is just so sad.
|
It's actually weird how many different things I know her from, since she seemed like a child actress that kinda just faded away. But between Pete and Pete, Harriet the Spy, Buffy, EuroTrip, and Gossip Girl, she stayed relevant for longer than most without seeming to have a terrible life. Even my daughter knows her from Gossip Girl and some terrible tween ice skating movies.

Gene Hackman, 95, his wife, 64, and a dog.
|
Gene Hackman passed away at the age of 95. He is one of the best actors of his generation. I need to rewatch The French Connection.
Edit: Posted at the same time, but I hadn't seen the bit about his wife and dog. I read they didn't emsusoect foul play, so Carbonmonoxide poison? |
Gene hackman his wife and his dog found dead in home. Probably a love triangle gone wrong
|
Unforgiven, Crimson Tide, Hoosiers … RIP

Quote:
That's the only thing I can figure, if there's truly no foul play. Unless double suicide is not considered foul play and they didn't consider the dog's death in that statement. Either that, or they've given that initial statement "pending further investigation" while they give family the time to come to grips with it and explain/cover up the circumstances in the next 48-72 hours. Just an odd set of circumstances. Crazy that they'd been married 37 years and didn't get married until Hackman was almost 60! When I turn 60, my wife and I will have been married only 34 years. |
Hackman is acting royalty. Some incredible roles. Just a master among legends.
|
I hate to be morbid but can I sign up to go at 95 by carbon monoxide poisoning?
|
My grandfather died peacefully in his sleep unlike the other passengers in his car that went out screaming.
Sent from my SM-S916U using Tapatalk |
So the family is saying they suspect carbon monoxide but the authorities are saying it doesn't look like that's the cause. And, some sort of meds near her body. If that's true, this is pure speculation, but maybe he died and she killed herself and the dog to be with him?
|
So here is a crazy bit of trivia. Gene Hackman auditioned and was a finalist for Mike Brady on The Brady Bunch. That would have been crazy.
Edit: Actually, the studio didn't let him audition because he was too "unknown." He won his first academy award the year after The Vrady Bunch debuted. |
They were deadset on a dad with a perm, I guess.
