Binged watched The Witcher s3. Currently only 5 episodes released.

IMO s2 was better and (other than for the stupid timeline back-and-forth with no help with dates) s1 was also better.

But overall - very enjoyable, well made, good story lines, fantastic fight scenes, and fantastic monsters! I like how they are developing Ciri. The Elven arc is still a little slow going but okay. Going to miss Cavill, I think he's perfectly cast.

(... and thank God they didn't go with the writers, show runners, director & special effects from the disasterous prequel with Michelle Yeoh)

Silo s1 ended with a strong episode. It finished before the actual book did (which revealed more). I decided to refresh my memory on wiki (and also on books 2 & 3).

Really a strong first season. There were a couple middling episodes that I thought dragged on but nothing too disappointing.

Strange New Worlds s2.3 was a time travel episode. I typically hate those but this one was okay. It lacked plausibility on how things came together but it did some further character development (2 of them) which I enjoyed. They need to get back to s2.1 formula now.

Shrinking on Apple TV is so much better than it has any right to be. I legit didn't know Harrison Ford was actually a very good actor.

About halfway thought and I am really enjoying it. The right blend of comedy and serious subjects.

Watched the first 2 episodes of Idris Elba's "Hijack" on Apple. Enjoying it and like the premise of a ME "kingdom" plane being hijacked on the way to London.

Idris is a business negotiator and he's playing careful & methodical 3D chess with the hijackers. Fun to see it play out (even though I don't buy it).

The one thing I really appreciate is the authentic passenger cabins/seating. I hate how we see extra "wide/space" aisles & rows in movies. The one thing I hate is all the hijackers have their finger literally on the trigger, all the time. Highly unrealistic IMO

Considering how many series are not renewed and abruptly ends, I think all these frakkers should have some halfway decent conclusion at each season finale.

I tried watching Netflix's Gloria but couldn't get through ep1.

Spies, lies and secrets flourish in Glória do Ribatejo, 1968, as a privileged Radio Free Europe engineer plays all the angles of Cold War Portugal.

Way too much smoking. I get adding some smoking for realism in the period, and the amount shown is probably accurate, but it made me feel a little nauseous.

I know at one time smoking in movies were discouraged. Not sure when it started back up again but I've noticed an uptick in the US shows.

Started re-watching The Expanse. Currently on episode 2.5.

I much better understand what's going on now and appreciate noticing some stuff I missed the first time around. My biggest beef so far is its darker, less lighting than it should be, especially in those ship-to-ship battles. I read somewhere that movies do this to cut down on special effects costs.

The series ends on Book 6 and have gotten Kindle Book 7 for my next plane trip. I've always struggled re-watching BSG because I found the "lore" very confusing (even after reading up on it). The Expanse is much more straight forward.

Just watched "Creed 3" on Amazon Prime. Not bad, but not up to par with the first two, IMO.

One of the most bizarre things about the Creed trilogy is that Apollo and Mary Anne Creed's two biological children are barely mentioned, and they don't even attend Mary Anne's funeral. The writers definitely left a big hole in the storyline.

Finished The Expanse s6. It only had 6 episodes so felt a little rushed vs the other seasons with 10-12. But considering everyone knew Amazon funding was drying up, they still did a great job with concluding the series.

There were some plot lines left open but in reading s6 reviews, basically have to start reading Book 7 which is 30 years later.

If you're a sci-fi fan and you haven't watched this yet, do it.

I have been obsessed with Painting With John recently. I think it's on max/hbo. It's pleasantly weird, but not modern over-the top intentionally weird, like 80s late night cable/Night Flight kind of weird. Very mild and absurd, the intimate weirdness of one creative person (John Lurie) given all too much rope in their own space, rather than calculated comedy from some production machine. Having said that, it's the kind of thing that is so mild that giving it any praise feels like it might ruin it from even the slightest expectations.

They Cloned Tyrone

First movie I've watched (aside from random old stuff on YouTube) in I literally don't remember when, based on a very strong recommendation from an old friend.

I have to admit I didn't find it as funny as he did, at least not in terms of quantity. The jokes that did hit were at times quite good -- and there weren't any that notably missed that I recall -- but I was actually more impressed by some of the camera angle & lighting choices than anything else.

I thought it hit its vibe well, mixing genres successfully. I'm not ready to hand out any awards or anything but perfectly fine piece of work. And I'll admit that the identity of "The Reverend" was completely lost on me until looking at the cast after the fact, I absolutely didn't spot who it was.

The Fallout TV show casting details and news | PC Gamer (https://www.pcgamer.com/fallout-tv-show-cast-release-everything-we-know/)

When is the Fallout TV series going to air?

The Fallout TV series is currently in production. Filming began on July 5, 2022, though there hasn't been a teaser or trailer or any sort of footage released yet. There's a lot involved in the production process, and how long it takes can vary quite a bit from shows. As a point of comparison, Season 2 of Netflix's The Witcher series went into pre-production in January 2020 and aired in December of 2021, but was heavily affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. Most television has a pace of one season/series per year.

I'd be willing to bet the Fallout TV series will start airing by the end of 2023, barring any major, unexpected hold-ups like a global thermonuclear war.

Yes, its confirmed.

While The Witcher Season 3 hasn’t debuted yet, it has already been renewed for a fourth season — but there’s a change coming. In Season 4, Liam Hemsworth will step in as the titular monster-hunter Geralt of Rivia, the role Henry Cavill originated in the first three seasons. The two actors shared the exciting news on social media Saturday afternoon.

“My journey as Geralt of Rivia has been filled with both monsters and adventures, and alas, I will be laying down my medallion and my swords for Season 4,” said Cavill in a statement. “In my stead, the fantastic Mr. Liam Hemsworth will be taking up the mantle of the White Wolf. As with the greatest of literary characters, I pass the torch with reverence for the time spent embodying Geralt and enthusiasm to see Liam's take on this most fascinating and nuanced of men. Liam, good sir, this character has such a wonderful depth to him, enjoy diving in and seeing what you can find.”

I was just saying to my wife yesterday that I am surprised they are still filming around here. Not as much, and I know from some of my customers in the industry that they are prepping for a long shutdown. There are still some productions going somehow. They also are continuing to expand one of the bigger studios here, doubling the size yet again. It might be reality TV. Netflix does much of their production here and it wouldn't surprise me if they start some reality shooting locally.

No actors if that is what she is asking. Set makers, production staff, etc. There are lots of blue collar workers that have moved to movie production around here. Cinelease Studios is the big one I was talking about, and then Three Horse is the one that has been around since the "Heat of the Night" days. I think much of "Vampire Diaries" was done there. Cinelease is more recent. It was the home for "First Lady", and I believe "Steel Magnolias" is produced there. Cinelease also has a big studio next town over where "The Resident" and "Doom Patrol" is filmed. They also filmed "Hat and Catch Fire" there.

Don't claim to know all the intricacies of the strike but assume there's a lot of people (non-writers, non-actors) who are not getting a paycheck during the strike.

So Bill and Drew wanting to restart their shows but making some concessions seems right to me. If more follow suit, that means the unions will have reduced leverage in negotiations. Interesting game of chicken right now.

Bill Maher and Drew Barrymore are returning to work — 'it’s all about greed' - MarketWatch (https://www.marketwatch.com/story/bill-maher-and-drew-barrymore-are-returning-to-work-its-all-about-greed-3924d0ee?mod=home-page)
Bill Maher and Drew Barrymore recently announced plans to resume their shows amid the Hollywood writers’ and actors’ strike — drawing backlash from union officials and public figures alike.

Maher hosts “Real Time with Bill Maher” on HBO, while Barrymore is behind the syndicated “Drew Barrymore Show.”

Maher, who announced his decision Wednesday, said in a post on X (formerly Twitter) that “it is time to bring people back to work” and that “much of [his] staff is struggling mightily.” But Maher also said that he “will honor the spirit of the strike” by not doing a monologue or his popular New Rules segment — in other words, elements of the show that require writers.

Barrymore, whose show resumes airing on Sept. 18, struck a similar tone. She said in an Instagram post earlier this week that her show “may have my name on it but this is bigger than just me.” But she also indicated that she will be in “compliance” with the strike terms — in her case she didn’t mention anything about writers, but noted that she will not be “discussing or promoting film and television that is struck of any kind.”

When I cut the cord like 3 years ago, Hulu was $34.99 and few of these other places (other than Netflix) had anything. Now Huu just went up to $84.99 or something (with HBO included) and I'm paying for Netflix, Apple TV, and Paramount plus. Add in my internet and ($40 from AT&T) and I'm nearly back up to the $200 that Comcast was charging.

I'm pretty lucky right now. I have T-Mobile and it comes with free Netflix, Apple TV, MLB tv, and MLS season pass. I'm grandfathered for the Disney/Hulu/ESPN+ bundle for $15 a month and I get back 1/2;by paying with my Amex. Somehow my Paramount account got messed up so I have free paramount+/showtime. And I got Peacock for $25 a year through December. Also have T-Mobile internet for $30 a month.

So for $40 a month I get internet/Hulu/ESPN/Disney/peacock/paramount. And I don't really count Amazon Prime as costing anything as the streaming there is a bonus.

Only thing I miss out on are braves games since MLB tv blacks them out, so I don't feel bad using free streams on Kodi.

Haha!

Slightly-on topic of cutting the cord, my trainer was talking about how her parents had a 'jailbroken firestick' that was the equivalent of those modified cable boxes that got all the channels in the 90s.

That was the first I had heard of such a thing, but I figured if my trainers' crusty parents could figure it out than I probably could. Just out of curiosity, I got a 4K firestick for $25 on Prime day and spent a weekend fucking around with it & taking a deep dive. You can potentially access anything on any streaming service, practically anything that has a torrent can be streamed instantly, and you can access to live streaming channels & sports from around the world. That comes with plenty of caveats though: Streaming copyrighted material is still illegal of course, and some of the optional graymarket services still cost money, just less of it. Quality can be questionable, the more niche the content the more the quality is a crapshoot. The interface is clunky. Setup is lengthy and seems like it requires some active management.

I don't think I could live with the various quirks to actually use it as my viewing source, but it was fun to fuck around with for a weekend.

‘The Continental’ TV Review: ‘John Wick’ Prequel On Peacock – Deadline (https://deadline.com/2023/09/the-continental-review-john-wick-prequel-series-mel-gibson-1235550932/)
Keanu Reeves’ master assassin may have been left for almost dead at the end of the fourth John Wick film, but things are alive and kicking in the franchise, at least retroactively.

Or, to quote Mel Gibson, who plays the manager of the “precious” hotel for killers at the center of the ’70s and New York-set The Continental: From the World of John Wick: “Son of a bitch, where’s my f*ckin’ shotgun?”

Unfortunately, I'm not on Peacock. If you are, let us know what you think ...

With more than a nod or two to 2011’s The Raid, the limited series partially directed by Albert Hughes kicks bellbottomed butt in true John Wick style over its September 22-debuting three-part run on Peacock.

A quick websearch affirms that I should add Wahlberg to the list.

I just always found it amusing that Mel Gibson is effectively black-listed from Hollywood movies for drunken driving and racist slurs. Yet no one seems to care that Mark Wahlberg has committed racist violence or made The Happening. Which IMO is much worse than anything Mel did.

I have no time for either of them, but I think what helped take Mel down so much harder were all of the recordings and videos. It's one thing to read about an incident and quite another to actually see it/hear it (see, e.g., Ray Rice).

Of the two, I feel the loss of Mel Gibson more so, because I really liked him as an actor and loved many of his movies.

Other than The Departed, which Wahlberg is great in, I think he's largely ass as an actor. I guess he was fine in Boogie Nights.

Agreed. I don't judge people on who they can or can't stand to watch. Mel was in so many great things that it is hard for me to say I would never watch "Lethal Weapon" or "Mad Max" again. But they are tarnished. I can't think of a Gibson movie I would go out of my way to watch, but I also wouldn't leave a party if someone had one on.

Exactly. I saw Road Warrior in the theater when I was a 8 years old (my parents were quite lax). I have loved that movie since then, but I am not sure if I would go out of my way to watch it again. Whenver I feel the Road Warrior itch, I just throw on "Fury Road."

The Elora's Dad episode of Reservation Dogs is so good. Most shows struggle with character development episodes, but they do them so well. There was basically no plot that mattered, but the character development was outstanding.

I think it is because all the sides of the strike have agreed to come to the table, and there seems to be some optimism. It would be stupid to burn bridges just to have the strike end a week later.

Strike is over.

Writers Strike Ends: WGA, AMPTP Agree to Deal After 146-Day Strike (https://variety.com/2023/biz/news/writers-strike-ends-wga-amptp-deal-2-1235733452/)
Hollywood heaves a sigh of relief. The WGA and major studios and streamers have reached a tentative agreement on a new three-year contract that promises to end the 146-day strike that has taken a heavy toll across the content industry.

Negotiators for the Writers Guild of America and Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers reached the finish line Sunday after five consecutive days of negotiations. Day 4 on Saturday mostly involved lawyers for the guild and AMPTP hashing out the fine print of language around complicated and groundbreaking additions to the WGA’s Minimum Basic Agreement. The nitty-gritty details of language around the use of generative AI in content production was one of the last items that the sides worked on before closing the pact.

No details yet, but my guess is they both gave ground but the writers would have "won." There is going to be some revenue sharing where there wasn't before, and a restriction on AI use where the studio's wanted none.

I read up on Wahlberg and disagree with you.

Wahlberg had 2 separate incidents (blacks & Vietnamese) in the 80s when he was in his teens. From what I've read (and correct me if I'm wrong), there's not been any other incidents since then.

Gibson has been antisemitic as an adult along with sprinkling of other "off-color controversies". See below for his list ...

Mel Gibson says the Catholic Church needs some 'housecleaning' | Daily Mail Online (https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-10453757/Mel-Gibson-says-Catholic-Church-needs-housecleaning.html)

He beat the shit out of a random innocent shopkeeper because he was Vietnamese and left him blind in one eye for life. Just like Tyreek Hill it's better to commit your most serious crimes before you get famous.

Mark Wahlberg gets pardon from the only person who matters, the victim Johnny Trinh | Daily Mail Online (https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2868589/Mark-Wahlberg-s-blinding-race-attack-victim-Johnny-Trinh-backs-bid-pardon-saying-course-forgive-didn-t-blind-Communist-Vietnamese-did-that.html)
Trinh, now a married father reveals he actually lost eye before attack when he served alongside US forces fighting Communists in South Vietnam

I don't know any charities he supports, but it would be good if he donated to some causes and personally ask his victims for forgiveness. As far as I know, he hasn't done that so that is also part of the story.

The WGA details have been released. The writers definitely won. Steaming residuals with the streamers having to disclose viewer hours and foreign inclusion. Restrictions to AI use, including the right for writers to use or refuse to use AI. Staff writer room minimums, not quite what they asked but still as many as 6 depending on the number of episodes. All things that the studio's wanted to be zero.

Finished re-watching "The Pacific". I prefer "Band of Brothers" but The Pacific was pretty good in its own right. It seemed to capture the horror that was the Pacific war, it was grittier and more ... brutal.

FWIW, there is a 3rd series coming out soon on AppleTV.

Masters of the Air is an upcoming American war drama streaming television miniseries for Apple TV+. It is based on the 2007 book of the same name by Donald L. Miller and follows the actions of the 100th Bombardment Group of the United States Army Air Forces during World War II. The series serves as a companion to Band of Brothers (2001) and The Pacific (2010). It is also the first series to be produced by Apple Studios, in cooperation with Playtone and Amblin Television.

I have one more episode left in The Fall of the House of Usher. I was expecting it to be set in the past, like Bly Manor, and to have a set up like one of the old Vincent Price films. But it is set in current times with flashbacks and formatted as an interview between a federal prosecutor and the patriarch of the Usher family. Pretty good stuff.

As a fun aside, I asked someone at work if they had seen it and they thought it was about Usher, the musician. Those Vincent Price movies were old when I was a kid, but I guess they don’t randomly air at night any more.

When we were dumping DTV and switching to YTTV and Netflix was talking about shutting down accounts for "family" sharing, I had planned to dump Netflix. But then a weird thing happened - my wife, who had never so much as opened a streaming app, suddenly was transported like 10 years into the past and became enamored with all of the movies and TV shows she could watch. So now she won't let me cancel it.

At least she's made the transition to streaming pretty well. I was concerned she would instantly age 25 years when DTV was cut off.

My wife has had our Hulu subscription in her name forever.

I have the Disney+ subscription (and all others).

I have wanted to sign up for the Disney-Hulu-ESPN bundle for a while now, but. because I have an annual plan with Disney+ I cannot do that under my current account. All I can sign up for is the same annual subscription or the ad-tier Disney+ one.

So, now I have to wait for my annual subscription to actually expire before I can sign up for the bundle.

Why are they making this so difficult?

Similarly, I get Peacock for "free" due to my Xfinity internet package. I was looking for a way to upgrade my Peacock subscription from ads to no ads (I'm like the RedZone, I don't do commercials). I eventually had to call Xfinity only to find out that it's impossible. You can't upgrade your free Peacock subscription by paying the difference.

In unrelated news:

I don't know if it's dependent on which service you are paying for and want to combine with the D+/Hulu/E+ bundle, but I was paying for E+ on an annual subscription and was able to get the bundle under the same account where they switched me to monthly payments for the bundle and credited me back a monthly amount for what was remaining on my E+ annual subscription.

I think it is. I did some research into this and Hulu had that kind of flexibility, but Disney+ did not. At all.

I will just have to wait until November 12 to re-subscribe to everything. Hopefully, my daughter isn't on a Disney show kick that morning. Currently, she's into "If You Give a Mouse a Cookie" on Amazon, but her moods are fickle.

Also, neither she nor my 12 year old ever watch cable TV, unless, of course, it's the only option at a hotel or something. If my 12 year turns on the TV, it's right to a streaming service.

I loaded and watched Bodies (https://www.imdb.com/title/tt18347622/) on Netflix during a recent trip.

Here's the hook: a detective is chasing a petty crook through London, seemingly routine stuff, and amidst rushing after him, she stumbles across a nude man, lying seemingly dead, with a gunshot to his eye.

We fade out, start up a separate story in 1941, which leads to apparently the same body turning up in the same side street in London. And then, a third story, in 1890, ends up the same way - the same street, same body.

It's a 7 or 8 ep mini series. Pretty well acted (I tab the lead actor from the 1941 segment for big things someday) and written, and... some intriguing stuff beneath the surface oddities. Not an A+ but maybe a solid B+ from me.

Blue Eye Samurai on Netflix is pretty great. Also, Gen V, the Boys spinoff, on Amazon was excellent and the second season of Invincible just started last week.

I wrapped up Blue Eye Samurai on Netflix. It was awesome. The animation is great, the voice acting is awesome and the writing and story are really good. Would definitely recommend. It's got a Kill Bill in feudal Japan vibe.

I, also, really liked Scavangers Reign on Max. Very solid sci-fi animated series. It's about a crew of a ship that crash lands on an alien planet. The world-building is amazing. The alien life on the planet is very cool, diverse and intricate.

I don't know why I've been watching so many animated series of late, but there you go.

Watched the 3 episodes of The Continental.

Disappointing, it wasn’t what I expected. It had some of the John Wick characters, some of the world … but it was so way out there. Some weird story writing, heck I could have come up with something better.

I don't know if anyone here watched The Keepers on Netflix, which was a murder mystery turned rant against the Catholic Church for covering up sexual abuse, but they've exhumed the body of one of the nuns who was killed in 1969. She was the second nun killed and may have known something about who killed the first nun (Cathy Cesnik) and why. Speculation is Cesnik knew a particular priest was sexually assaulting students and was murdered.

FBI to exhume body of Joyce Malecki, whose murder was featured in Netflix's 'The Keepers' (https://www.cbsnews.com/baltimore/news/family-fbi-to-exhume-body-of-joyce-malecki-whose-murder-was-featured-in-netflixs-the-keepers/)

It was absolutely crazy and was an obsession for months on end of the old "the donald" subreddit. I remember that SNL game show skit about "Ginny and Georgia" being the most watched TV show in the country but none of the contestants ever having heard of it, despite all being TV enthusiasts.

I spend a decent amount of time on Netflix and it's never been recommended to me. Never seen any reference to it anywhere except for that SNL sketch and that spreadsheet of hours watched.

It's kind of fascinating how segmented we are, and how media companies have figured out how to target their content to people in efficient ways.

Enjoying "The Brothers Sun". Up to ep 4 and keeping my interest. Michelle Yeoh is great. Good MA choreography, comedy etc.

The one thing I don't really like is the movie involves the top guys of a Taiwanese Triad. Show humanizes (?) them and one of them is the protagonist. If Taiwanese Triads are anything like the Chinese/Hong Kong Triads, they don't need to be humanized. I know it's just TV but making top guy in the triad the good guy just seems wrong to me.

Did you have the same issue with the Sopranos?

Edward64
01-08-2024, 08:21 AM
No.

That comparison did come up when I was thinking about this and was tossed pretty quick. Sopranos did not try to portray the gangsters as heroes.

The Brothers Sun does have some blurbs about what they don't into (e.g. no human trafficking because the cost-benefit ratio wasn't good) but if the Triad (e.g. biggest in Taiwan) are much worse than just a NJ mob guy.

I'm into ep. 6 now. They are beginning to address my "issue" a little bit more.

I definitely still recommend checking it out. Other than for my "issue" the writing, acting and comedy is pretty good.

X-Files reboot.

I liked the stand alone episodes but the smoking man & alien arc was too confusing. I was totally lost when watching it first time around. Hope they take it easy on that stuff or at least make it less confusing.

I want more fluke man and inbred families!

A recent round-up by Bloomberg confirmed that Disney is working on a reboot of The X-Files. The series will be helmed by Black Panther and Creed filmmaker Ryan Coogler, echoing statements from original series creator Chris Carter earlier in 2023. Per Carter, Coogler’s take on The X-Files will feature “a diverse cast,” but that’s all we know about the revival so far.

My understanding he also knew there was some people on set using live ammo in those guns. That should have never happened on set, and as a producer adds to his culpability. I think involuntary manslaughter is probably about right. I can see him taking a plea and possibly not spending any reaL time in jail as well.

She couldn't even decently acquit herself in the Expendables movie, and those movies are tailor-made for people with limited or no acting range.

Of course, what's worse - getting a decent start like Carano did (i.e. Haywire) and then tossing it away, or never really getting started, e.g. Rousey?

Or maybe build a halfway-decent resume of B-grade action movies and then throw it all away to be Putin's puppet?

Finished s3, it was great. s1 story was more intricate (?) but I prefer the slow plodding pace from s3. The reveal wasn't what I expected (e.g. since they referenced s1) so a nice surprise. The last 15 minutes was nice but kinda PO me also at the same time.

On a side note, I really appreciated the era accurate stuff like the cars, computers, phones etc. I saw some greenbar (!) paper printouts which I thought was pretty cool.

So overall, pretty different from s1 but not complaining. Looking forward to s4 with Jodie Foster.

That is just not a surprise. That's why we cancelled instead of going to an ad plan. I was on the Hulu ad plan to begin with, and it was also awful. The same ad over and over again, breaking into the show at the worst times. It completely killed my desire to watch, and I determined right then I would go without before I would pay for an ad-laden streamer.

edit: I will just go back to a cheaper plan cable if all the streamers stop offering ad-free plans. At least on cable the ads are planned around the shows, not just cut into many times mid-scene.

Maybe it's just me, but I turned on The Greatest Night in Pop with no expectations, but damn was it enjoyable. Plus, knowing that Stevie Wonder was basically Bob Dylan's teddy bear is just so sweet

We watched this last night on my boss's recommendation. Really good, better than I expected. A few thoughts:

1. I either forgot, or never knew, how big a role Lionel Ritchie played in WATW. I'm sure I knew at the time (although maybe not - I was only 13 at the time), but it was a surprise last night. He really did a great job of storytelling and keeping the ego in check narrating the whole thing. From some things I've read about him, that might have been a difficult task, but he pulled it off really well.

2. I wasn't a huge fan of most of those artists even in their prime, but last night was enjoyable. Nostalgia is a helluva drug.

3. Huey Lewis (now, in his interviews) could have been portrayed by a bearded Al Franken and I wouldn't have known. I thought 2 things when I saw his clips - he seems like an exceedingly cool, down to earth guy, and is... is that Al Franken?

4. I don't understand why Bob Dylan was there. I mean, I get it, but given the particular song... no. Jesus Crispies did he look uncomfortable throughout the entire thing, and that was BEFORE he got put on the spot to "sing." I feel like he's the definition of someone who caught lightning in a bottle at a specific moment in time and has coasted on that legendary short period and a specific sound that hasn't aged well for him or in American culture. 5. I forgot that MJ was showing his weirdness as early as 1984. We tend to think about all of the weird stuff in the late 80s/90s (or at least, that's when I associate it with him) - separated by some years from the Thriller days - but I guess not. They did a good job highlighting his brilliance in the few audio/video clips they showed of him creating parts of the song on the spot.

6. I know it wasn't the purpose of this documentary, but I'd pay to watch another hour of the backstory on who didn't come and why. They went into it a bit with Prince, and Sheila E was obviously pissed that she got invited and promised a solo as a bait-and-switch to lure Prince to the studio, but that was about it. Prince insisting on a guitar solo in a room away from everybody is pretty on point. But I'd love to hear why Madonna wasn't there - she was standing next to Huey Lewis on the red carpet, so she was in LA - or Dolly Parton - she seems like an obvious choice - or anyone else they tried to get, or who wanted in but was refused. Give me some dirt!

7. Waylon Jennings walking out because they were talking about adding some Swahili to the song... I'll take "WATW participants most likely to vote for Donald Trump if they were still alive" for $2000, Alex.

8. Second to uncomfortableness to Dylan was Dan Akroyd. What the hell was he doing there? Yes, I know, Blues Brothers, etc. They didn't show him much, but when they did, he seemed to be taking a proper stance - in the back, out of the way, bowing in deference to the world of musical talent in the room. He seemed like he didn't belong, for sure, and it felt like he knew it.

Looking forward to Shogun (Disney+ for Germany but not sure for The US, Wiki says Hulu and FX).
The source material was already put into a short series (that was then also re-edited and released as a movie). Haven't watched that or read the book, which is a bit of a rarity for me with historical series/movies based on books so that's nice.

Don't read the Wiki article too closely if you want to avoid potential spoilers on who lives or dies as for some unholy reason the years of birth and death are next to the historical characters in the Cast tab.

Pull up any random social media post asking about the worst concerts you've ever attended, and like 60% of the posts will be about seeing Bob Dylan over the past 30-40 years.

I've never really understood the appeal of Dylan though of course I can recognize his contribution, even if through volume alone, to the 20th century's canon of popular music.

But I suspect the reason he's had such long-standing fame is that he was an easy avatar for what most Boomers wanted to be, but couldn't. A successful artist and free spirit not locked down by a 9-to-5 job, a connection to key events of the civil rights movement even if his involvement was mostly ancillary, and of course the sex, drugs, and rock'n'roll.

There are a lot of people who gained lasting fame and/or influence through being wish fulfillment for Boomers, and he's definitely one of them.

I liked the new Season of True Detective but I think i would place it behind 1 and 3. The actors were all really good. They definitely stacked the cast with with elite talent(Foster, Hawes, Eccleston, Shaw) and Kali Reis was great in her first major role. Don’t recall seeing Finn Bennet before either.

If they tell the story as written I'd love to see it. If they think it needs to be "cleaned" so nobody is offended, then not so much.

You should expect lots of tragedy but no sex and blood

seriously tho....I was a wee lad when this came out. All I remember was the opening intro credits and that song. The miniseries itself was boring to me.

I've been traveling a lot, so I haven't had a lot of time to watch tv and specifically Masters of the Air. Surprised to have heard so little about it.

Curb is still a home run for me. Especially since they came back from Atlanta. And I love Irma.

"You've got a structured settlement and you need cash now!"

Edit: I also think Curb is grandfathered in to being able to do a type of comedy you couldn't do on mainstream TV anymore. They put blackface on a white lawn jockey to replace the one they broke for god's sake.

So back to the whole we are the world thing, how is it that Michael McDonald didn’t have a spot on that song? He literally did harmony on a bunch of random tracks in the 70s and 80s and a lot of them were uncredited. It seems like he would be a perfect fit.

Ghost Econ

He tried, but he had to come from somewhere back in the studio. He was a sentimental fool who was trying to recreate what had yet to be created.

Also, I think it's because he didn't do soundtracks like Loggins.

I haven't watched a network TV show since the mid-2000s (except for a summer run of that forensics geneology show a few years back), but when I hear Columbo comps mentioned, my ears perk up.

I guess the success of Poker Face got people thinking about how they can rehash old characters into new shows, so apparently there's a bit character from a couple of older CBS shows who stars in a Columbo-type howcatchem-style show that more or less can be watched as individual episodes, called Elsbeth. The reviews are good, and it sounds like a quirky version of Columbo. I'm going to give it a shot.

My wife and I started watching The Traitors last night on Peacock. We ended up staying up late watching and immediately threw it back on this morning. Needless to say, we are hooked. It still has elements of reality TV that I don't like, but the actual game is fun. The challenge with the bugs and rats was very "Fear Factor" which I didn't like, but other than that I like the challenges.

So, we watched Elsbeth last night. And yes, it's clear that it is intended to capitalize on the success of Poker Face and owes a great debt to Columbo. My wife liked it so that's good. I thought it was ... OK, but I'll continue to watch.

The biggest issues I have with it are (1) pacing and (2) you can tell it's a network show. First, this type of show absolutely needs to be a minimum 90 minutes (with commercials) or around an hour run time to really get it right. I thought the pacing, the directness of her questioning, how quickly the plot points moved, was way off and just felt rushed/forced.

The network thing... The character is too over the top quirky for my liking, and the rest of the characters just come in and out and are paper thin. A lot of this goes back to pacing and forcing this into a 60 minute show, but that's also a network thing. It feels like a show CBS would air - you know what I mean? No subtlety, clues are thrown in front of us and then immediately pointed out without giving them the chance to be found organically. She's way too direct in her questioning, almost to the point of absurdity.

The ending was aped from several Columbo episodes - I don't necessarily have a problem with that, and the "easter eggs" actually enhanced my enjoyment of Poker Face - but here, what took 10-15 minutes in a Columbo episode to play out (and pay off in tension and the climax), began and finished in literally 60-90 seconds here. Definitely not as satisfying a watch.

So, we'll continue to watch but I wish this had been picked up by Netflix or Max or something and given the proper treatment to find its full potential. I did read that it had strong numbers so that bodes well for continuing. One thing networks have over streaming services is that annual schedule they like to keep. Poker Face, as successful as it was, is just now ramping up filming for season 2, I believe. So we're looking at 2025, probably? That sucks. TV series shouldn't be on the same schedule as major rock band album releases. I'm still pissed Mindhunter stopped after season 2...

Also, I just read that the next episode isn't until April 4th. I get it - SOTU followed by March Madness - but I find it odd they'd run the premiere and then let it sit for a month before the next episode. I wonder if they were caught off-guard by the strong ratings and are going to wish they had scheduled this differently.

It was ok. They pumped it up since it had the GoT show runners, but if felt like a SyFy show with a slightly larger budget. And like the last couple of GoT seasons, they basically did a speed run of the first book. It just felt really condensed.

My last rewatch was in early-mid 2010s. I've just finished s1.ep3.

For whatever reason, I'm paying more attention to how supposed "normal" life is depicted. How Lucius treats his wife & children when he first gets home. How the nobles treated their slaves/servants (e.g. having "coitus" with servants around them). How Titus has fun in bars & women. How Atia uses her daughter for political gain etc.

I don't know how real this all really is, but it strikes me as more real/true than not.

It would suck to be anyone other than a male noble back then.

They did a great job trying to portray Roman life without pulling very many punches for the modern sensibilities. Some of the actual history is a little fuzzed over, but the way of life was very close to real.
